    Ace of Spades is a legendary. This song is about Lemmy's gambling habits. He was always borrowing money Hence the nick name Lemmy as in Lemme a fiver. They used to play cards for money in the back of the touring van.

    Did Lemmy die a millionaire? Yes, he had about 6 million dollars in his account, when he died. But at the time? Definitely no! He's called Lemmy, cause he was always asking "Lemmy a fiver!" and it's so part of Motörhead's history they got robbed for years. Like they were on TV on Top of the Pops and Fast Eddie was asking to allow him a break while painting houses to watch himself from the charts. Lemmy was a gambler, that's true, he did the one armed bandits. So maybe he projected his understanding on the poker phrases he thought would fit a song a lot better. In general this was the "Paranoid" of the band, more thrown together than artistically produced, but the biggest hit everybody remembered, while the band was throwing one more than solid album after another on the market. The "Ace of Spades" album is still my favourite for the desity of classics, the song is an epitome of Rock'n'Roll for sure, but it's essential these days to look back on Lemmy as the artist that was right there, when Rock'n'Roll was born, who went on tour with Hendrix as a Roadie and been playing in bands himself since the sixties. He even had one complete successful career in Hawkwind with more albums than many professional artists are ever able to achieve. Motörhead was just a bastard, when they threw him out of the band and it looked like nobody would want the ugliest and loudest band in the world. They were punk and even thrash when it wasn't invented. But a song like "Ace of Spades", I don't know if you can even feel it at all over in ear headphones. You really gotta play it on 11 on a good stereo, so you can at least try and simulate the jet plane level of noise from a concert. Lemmy would always ask if it was loud enough when your clothes and skin were already pushed to the back flying in the wall of sound. I can see Sori liked the voice, she was looking like, yeah, that's an alpha. Lemm would have liked her comparing him to country, he's an outlaw. As much as I love you for doing it, I kinda feared you were doing this song first a little, cause from where you're coming from, you might not have much of a category for it. It's obviously a 12 for me. There's a reason though I recommended some of the more unusual Motörhead songs, that will familiarize you more with Lemmy's mind. Looking foreward to you doing "1916", "Love me forever" and "Don't let Daddy kiss me". All ballads, but that's Lemm, where he put more emphasize on wording than anything else. He's a great lyricist and such a character!

    • @IntergalacticApeMan
      @IntergalacticApeMan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      He also had an income from his Hawkwind songs to bring him through the early years, but I could imagine him going through a phase of hustling to finance his full time musicianship. What speaks for him though is, he never was into buying houses.

    • @IntergalacticApeMan
      @IntergalacticApeMan 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I'm pretty sure Lemmy wrote the song to his lost girlfriend that died of an heroin overdose. They had a quite troubled relationship, but my senses tell me it was when his heart was really broken. Maybe I'm putting too much into it with my interpretation, but look at him performing the song. That sounds desperate to me. He even dedicated his autobiography to her. BTB do it nicely, maybe too nice. I just don't feel the same vibes from her that I get from Lemmy doing it.

    I live in Las Vegas and have worked in casino's and local bars as a DJ and Club Promoter. The saddest thing is to see people come in and cash their paycheck and feed $100 bill after $100 bill into the machines. Then, leave completely broke. Gambling is an addiction and destroys lives and families. Another sadness is the elderly. If you go to any of the "local's" casino's you will see 80% plus of its customers are retired people, spending their entire day and Social Security check in front of a slot machine. Boredom and loneliness are temporarily quelled by alcohol and casino games. The corporations and stockholders make a fortune off the misery and frailty of others.

    My brother lives in Vegas. He would agree with what Vin is saying about the underside of the city, with the wasted lives. He can't stand gambling, and says there's a lot of people there that have nothing to do with the casinos (he lives there because his wife is a flight attendant that flies out of McCarran, otherwise they wouldn't be there).

  • @ChicagoTRS
    @ChicagoTRS 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    It certainly possible to be a successful gambler but really depends on the game. I made a nice side living playing poker for a few years. It takes a LOT of discipline and not many people have that skill. The vast majority of casino games you will lose and will definitely lose in the long run. I do agree with Vin, casino gambling mostly preys on the poor and desperate.
    Sori...there is no such thing as luck. It is all about odds and math, those mega-casino resorts were not built on the backs of winners.

      My dad took me to a casino on my 18th birthday (legal gambling age is 18 where I'm from) he gave me $20 to gamble and I had a bunch of other money from my birthday. I played one slot machine, hit a win and doubled my money. I stopped playing and after we were done there we went home and I bought my family pizza with my winnings.
      I'll go back with $1000 some day and just play blackjack. That's the real fun in a casino, everything else is boring.

    Why 22 Vin ? As everyone knows, 42 is the answer to everything :p
    And as to "Prostitution is legal in Las Vegas".. granted, i've never been to Las Vegas (or Nevada).. but my understanding is that it is ILLEGAL in Las Vegas (there are legal brothels, etc in the state, but not in the city).
    Edit : And as to your argument Vin, it is selective and paper thin... gambling in moderation is fine, but can become an addiction....alcohol in moderation is fine, but can become an addiction.. if you want to stack up the two against each other, alcoholism will win by a MILE (they'll both ruin their respective hosts financially, but alcoholism has the added "benefit" of killing a number of innocents (drunk driving, drunken brawls).. is the cause of, as Sori said, a large amount of sexual assaults, etc etc.. you cannot even begin to compare the two in "damage done to humanity" if you want to put it in that context.
    Yet for you, Alcohol is good, while Gambling is bad....lol... just lol... you have an insanely warped world view Vin.

    Motorhead and Lemmy were just a hard rockin band that lived the metal lifestyle to the fullest. They were a huge influence on the rest of the metal scene, this song was released in 1980 and was super heavy and fast for the time. Lemmy especially is one of the godfathers of metal. Lemmy was metal.
    I think alcohol has been a LOT more destructive force on society than gambling...probably 10 fold or more.

    The ace of spades card has a special meaning specially in war the song has a double meaning about gambling your life its not really about money. Playing for the high one, dancing with (playing against) the devil.

  • @AnonEyeMouse
    @AnonEyeMouse 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The trick to gambling is to assume you will lose. You go to the cinema for a good time, you expect to lose money on the ticket, food, drinks and travel. Same for going to a game or any other pass time. If you are going gambling, accept that you will, not may, WILL lose a specific amount of money. Take THAT amount of money with you. Play THAT amount of money and no more, no matter whether you win or lose. The money you win, IF ANY, is prize. It's a fluffy toy at the carnival, it's a 'I ate the king crab special' T-Shirt at an all you can eat place.
    If you can't hold to this rule? Don't gamble.
