      The wolf destruction was "completed" over the 1800s in most northern countries due to advancements in firearms. Reintroducing wolves would massively cut down on wild pigs but no politician will do it, as eventually a human, likely a child, will be taken by a wolfpack and renew calls for extermination again.

      and I know it very well, once I had a "very close" encounter with a wild boar (perhaps a male), while I was coming home from work it was on my path, I took a tuft of grass to distract it (I know you shouldn't give them to eat. but they don't say that you can use a "natural food" to save your thighs). after taking some grass, I found him around the corner (in the true sense of the word). luckily for me, he liked the "bunch of grass" and I walked like a shrimp (with my eyes on him), so as not to have any nasty surprises from him! for me so far, I have had no attacks. @@extrahistory In fact the pandemic can be blamed for some of the recent incursions of wild boars in the outskirts of cities both in Italy and Spain (lots of cases in my native Galicia as well), as packs of them moved from the countryside to city's suburbs at that time looking for food, and have become semi-permanent residents of those areas since then.
      Another issue to blame boars of, btw, is an increase in car accidents whenever they reside, mainly at night. It's no fun crashing into a big boar, even with a proper car!

    • @Bacopa68
      @Bacopa68 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      In Texas wild pigs are classified as a feral invasive species. They can be hunted year-round with no limit. There are people who keep packs of dogs just to hunt pigs. The dogs come in two types, curs and pits. Curs are long legged hounds with good noses similar to a foxhound. Pits are sturdier slower dogs that will try to corner a group of pigs so they can be easily shot.

    3:43 female wild boar, to be precise (and originally written "jabalina"); weird enough (well, not so), it's the same word usen for "javelin", that spear that's used as a throw implement in track-and-field along with the hammer and the shot.
    Another reason not to feed wild pigs and boars is that doing so encourages them to come back with reinforcements, and they are very dangerous (not only are they lumps of pure muscle with the temper of a hurricane, if you have the bad luck to very intimately meet one that's trying to cross the road, chances are high your vehicle is now scrap, and pray that you haven't been hurt or worse).

    • @MatthewTheWanderer
      @MatthewTheWanderer ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Um, the pigs were named after the spear because of the sharp bristles on their backs, btw. So, it's not a coincidence that the same word is used. It's also why another slang word for wild hogs is "razorback" (which is used as the mascot for the University of Arkansas).

    In Belgium i know that wild boars are a troublesome subject. It's a local animal with some cultural significance and which is often hunted for food like dried sausage. But they wreck havoc on crop fields and it's know that some hunter feed them (which is illegal) with the puropose of encouraging them reproducing and making them tamer so they're easier to hunt. We've been trying for years to reintroduce wolves in the country but some farmers and hunter see them as a threat for their buisness.

      Let's not pretend that the reintroduction of an animal that historically has been the enemy of pastoral communities for literal centuries to the point that folk tales and Nursery rhymes make use of it as a metaphor for evil that must be destroyed would fare any better in recent times....

    • @smalltime0
      @smalltime0 ปีที่แล้ว

      While not exactly related, if they wanted to hunt them they should just use Judas Pigs.
      With mixed results this was tried for a bit in the 90s/00s in Australia. Basically you fit a regular pig with some radio equipment and it will go find where the boars are.
      Its based on a similar principle to Judas Goats in controlling feral goats (not to be confused with Judas Goats in shepparding).
      There are risks, you need to know that the boar density is pretty high... otherwise you are just adding to the population and the pigs don't always find a group.
      Unfortunately in SW WA we had a problem with wild deer that were released in the 19th century. Hunting Permits (strictly for deer and feral pigs) in state forests were eventually handed out like there was no tomorrow to get rid of them. But when the deer problem was fixed, some d*ckheads decided to release more deer into the forests just to hunt wild deer.

    I have a note about pig terminology:
    Male pigs in general are called Boars.
    Castrated male pigs are called barrows
    Young female pigs before having a litter of piglets is called a Glit
    An adult female pig who has given birth to at least one litter, is called a Sow

    In Brazil, things are literally going wild with pigs.
    We have here three species of wild pigs: The Peccary the Tayasu (also know here as "Queixada"), and the Wild Boar, introduced here by the europeans. The Wild Boar, and sometimes even the Tayasu breed with domestic pigs.
    As this wasn't bad enough, the actual government is trying to restrict firearms access for the civilians, making species control even more difficult.

    • @slightlybored
      @slightlybored ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is misleading:
      As you might know, you CAN get a firearm license for hunting in Brasil, and one of the only species of animal that can be considered for hunting are the invasive ones such as the Wild Boar. Prospective "hunters" have been introducing Wild Boars to regions where they previously hadn't been present so that they can acquire such a license, destroying the environment and endangering native species in the process.
      ...
      An article written in the Ciência UFPR e-magazine last year highlights this issue, just search for:
      "O dilema dos javalis: da transmissão de doenças ao estímulo da caça ilegal"
      You can also search for the scientific article on which the magazine based theirs on:

      No this is wrong. Pecarries are not pigs at all, and they have never been able to be properly domesticated.
      They can't breed like pigs either and their flesh tastes far worse, which is why in Brazil notably, the Jaguars there have been observed to actually prefer to hunt and eat feral pigs over the native pecarries.

    Boars are also a big problem in middle/western europe like germany or austria. They used to bring through 3-4 young boars, but thanks to warmer climate during winter in the recent 20-30 years, they often manage to bring through their whole litter of up to 10.

    As someone who was born in Texas, I am glad that you are covering enemy #1 over there. In Texas, there is no season on feral hogs. No bag limit. Not even safety requirements. The state has given Texans the one thing you should never give them in order to destroy these critters: limitless discretion. People have used explosives and helicopters to hunt these things. Some call it cruel, but these things are invasive, eat crops, and are dangers. And they multiply like damn rabbits!

    Hi guys, long time fan! I have a correction about what you said about the pigs terminated in Rome: the protest sparked not because the people liked, but because they were domesticated, basically pets in an enclosure.
    The termination order came because of a disease that was spreading among wild hogs, but these clearly weren't affected, and yet the governement proceeded anyway without even bothering to send a veterinary to check and the police barged in the enclosure basically beating the owners and their friends who were trying to reason with them
    Hope i shed some light on that event, take care!

    I can sum up why the pigs mainly steal the birds eggs. The pigs have their own city on an island called “Piggy Island”. The ruler of Pig City “King Pig Smooth Cheeks” is the one who wants to eat the eggs. The regular piggies we see are the lowest of the low in pig city, “Minion Pigs” and basically do whatever they are ordered to do, like stealing the eggs.

    Hunters have been saying this same thing for years. Feral hogs are an extremely dangerous pest and every year this problem isn't effectively addresed our chances of solving this problem becomes worse and worse. People who do not have a deeper understanding of the impact of feral hogs (like the people who protested in Rome) should not have a say in how their populations are managed. Saving pigs means condemning a host of other species.
    Thanks for shedding some light on this subject!

    I was actually there for that. I was visiting one of the small hike-able mountains. And before we even crossed the road to get to the starting point there was this massive furry pig with tusk and I was. "Is that a wild pig? Huh, I thought most of the wildlife would avoid cities." **takes a picture, than crosses the road, than sees a mama boar with a train of piglets behind her.** Super cute, and every other hiker nearby was like standing still as they just walked past us without any fuss. And duh, you don't mess with wild pigs. And than I after I searched the web to learn more.... I realized it was just the tip of the pigs-berg...
