@@wegotit2587 I think JC's ideal creative process is collaborative, hence why he doesn't feel like a "Solo" artist. MMC was also very collaborative. It's wild how well they kept the Lou Perlman thing under wraps -- I knew there was something going on and that the guy was really shady, but I didn't know that these guys were living that, 'If he wins rights to the name, we're done," kind of fear. I mean, everybody loves to talk about No Strings Attached, but I wonder if this kind of stuff had an effect on Celebrity. I've seen Chris do a lot of interviews from this year, and he always talks about how weird it was for these guys to be that age and be hit with "STATUS" like that, and not know what to do with it, and kind of playing it by ear, but being scared shitless the whole time, being lied to and used by opportunistic assholes, screwing with your financial income, etc. The whole "No Strings Attached" theme feels like it's a bit more nuanced and layered than it did when that album was new - talking about making contracts and having the rug pulled out from under you, and having that "Yes, but..." aspect where there are definitely strings attached, and Nsync never wanted them to be. So, yeah. I wonder if / how that had any effect on the writing and production of "Celebrity" - particularly with the Pop single. I mean, I know the story about it being influenced by people questioning the legitimacy of the group as if it weren't credible, but it's not difficult to pick THAT aspect up. Seeing if it goes further than that intrigues me.
Okay, part of the reason I'm interested in hearing what an "NSYNC 202X" album would sound like is because NSA launched on March 21, 2000, and Celebrity launched on July 24, 2001. We live in a completely different world, now. All of that was before 9/11 happened. It was okay to be a little careless, but if you went back and actually read through some of the lyrics to NSYNC songs, there's a lot that I don't know if you could get away with, now. And that's not a, "Lance won't sing about titties anymore," thing. It's closer to watching older James Bond movies... after a long, long time. Out of nowhere, the dude will just slap a woman on the ass and tell her to go away so the men can talk, and you're like... HOLY SHIT, I don't remember James Bond being THIS grapey. Dude needs to slow his roll or he's gonna end up like Harvey Weinstein or Bill Cosby... And you're sitting there, listening to It's Gonna Be Me... and that first verse is talking about how she's had bad experiences with guys, she's been cheated on, she's been left, she can't trust anybody, and she's close to just swearing off men entirely... and the chorus comes in and just... GASLIGHTS the shit out of the poor lady. Literally, "You've had X happen, you've had Y happen, you've had Z happen... and for some reason I'M STILL NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR YOU? I'm not like those other guys!" And then the second verse comes in like, "You know what? Fuck it. You don't have a choice anymore, you're dating me before you get too old to be unattractive. I said that you're going to date me, and I don't know what part of that you don't understand... What, are you deaf AND blind?" Anybody? EDIT - Actually, now that I'm thinking about it... there are a few songs where they're almost 20 years ahead of the pronoun game. You have your "I Thought She Knew," and "Girlfriend," there's always the ad-libs that could be... re-ad-libbed. But a lot of the songs get around it by having them be about "you" and "me" and not "she" and "her". And that feels like it would be a writing decision that covers all the bases without being pejoratively labelled as "woke" because the very concept of LOVE doesn't really have a whole hell of a lot to do with chromosomes. You generally don't write love letters to a vagina to begin with... you write love letters to someone you love.
I'd chop off my arm to hear JC singing again. We need him back, please Universe, make it happen.

What, are you deaf AND blind?"
Anybody?
