- How do you even begin to recreate the miniature Supermarionation worlds of cult television favourite Thunderbirds? Here is how we approached the model making, puppet building and set design of the iconic Gerry and Sylvia Anderson series.

Century 21 Films Ltd is a multi-faceted production company whose work spans drama to documentary, miniature effects to puppet shows.
It was founded by a group of filmmakers who first collaborated on Filmed in Supermarionation, the story of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's hit puppet shows including Thunderbirds, Stingray and Captain Scarlet.
Since then, we have worked for a multitude of high-profile clients including ITV, BBC, Mammoth Productions, British Film Institute and the Halifax working on projects such Thunderbirds, Endeavour, Doctor Who and The Twilight Zone.
“Toys come to life” absolutely nails the aesthetic and the appeal. It’s how we dream of our toys having adventures.
It makes my heart swell to know my childhood treasures are still appreciated so much,what a legacy we have in all GA productions,F.A,B.
when Ii watched this as a child, I thought the future would be great. Now look what's happened! We have an energy crisis, we are told to switch things off, there is talk of blackouts, Russia drags us back to the bad old days. I guess it was all a dream

@@vincentl.9469 Well, here in South Africa that's been the status for the last 15 years already and it's only getting worse with all the corruption and lawlessness.
I certainly hope you guys don't end up in the same boat. My family are all in the UK and their biggest "fear" is that it'll just end up being another South Africa. Personally, I doubt it - as Africa seems to just breed the worst possible leaders.
0.09 at this landing feature, just required 2 plumbing lines of multi vector boosters across belly of a rocket canisters, as both the roll of vector maneuver thrust balance during land & axis rotation on micro gravity, Starship-cargo could. (No critical landing).
I didn't know this was going to be remade. Very pleased to see they've steered clear of the computer animation and stuck to what made thunderbirds great.
Personally I hate CGI and especially when film makers go overboard with its use! It was the Supermarionation that MADE Thunderbirds what it was!
They did make a crappy cgi remake already....

@@borisdamoledon't recall a 'crappy' one, but there was definitely a superb CGI/Model hybrid that ran for 72 FAB episodes!
@@borisdamole and this is exactly why the cgi version got the grumbling, there was not the brilliant detailed sets as with the original

They certainly seem to be going all out on replicating that 60s feeling!
Every time I watch this, I am blown away by the level of detail and accuracy with regards to the original series. Stephen, Justin and the team have such a passion for this artform, it clearly shines through and is also evident in their Nebula75 series. Truly FAB!

I cried. Took me back 58 years. I was big on Gerry Anderson all my childhood up to today.
I've been rewatching the episodes on ITV Hub, and I'm still amazed by how they made them!

I am 68 and have thought often about the look of the Thunderbirds. It was so different, like an a model and puppet reality and I really enjoyed that. Almost like a 60's Japanese vibe! So very cool

How did I not know this existed until today!! I'm almost 40 now and grew up watching the re-runs with my Dad, for a few years Thunderbirds, Stingray and Captain Scarlet were cool again, at least in the UK they were cool again. If only they did some new episodes then. I'm half way through the first anniversary episode and wanted to write what a brilliant, faithful, quality job they did of reproducing everything, it's like discovering a forgotten episode lost in the archive.
Hollywood could learn a thing or two about respecting the intellectual property of others from the guys who put this together, but these guys could learn a thing or two about marketing from Hollywood, I should have heard about this.

I am amazed of the amount of effort you all put into it. Not at least all the details and effort to make it look true to the original series.
Of all the vehicles from *THUNDERBIRDS,* *_Thunderbird 2_* was and always will be my favorite...👍
The little films they did during lockdown were brilliant
Thunderbirds was just the start. Anderson's meticulous attention to set design and miniatures was elevated further in UFO and further with Space 1999. Both series hold up very well to today's standards with Space 1999 being almost abstract in its model work.
Thunderbirds wasn’t even the start - they had been going a few years before. And to be fair, Gerry didn’t have any particular involvement with the designs.
I watched two of the new TB episodes last night on ITVX. Amazing. And I immediately recalled that feeling which motivated me to become an engineer. Brilliant.
I absolutely love what they did with this... It was such a wonderful omage to the original.
to think after the original was finished with filming they throw it all away into skips. and some people saved as much as they could. though this was the thing back then. no one thought they would be worth money.

As a child growing up in the '60s my favorite show by far was the "Thunderbirds" and my favorite toy was Major Matt Mason.
Speaking of 1960s television shows being recreated nowadays, in my opinion the _absolute best_ and most _thoroughly accurate_ production is the *STAR TREK CONTINUES* episodes which were created a few years back. The attention to detail is _stunning!_

Hey was super excited watching this clip one the best TV shows is making an incredible comeback…..from what I’ve seen you’ve nailed the puppets and sets, think as kids we knew they were puppets but the show had stellar storyline’s….but the models were absolutely next level….so pleased your doing this project.

It's weird I grew up on thunderbirds but in the late 90s and early 2000s and I never thought about it as being "old" already. I just knew that was my thing, I wore those VHS tapes thin.
I'm so glad this gets the meticulous recreation it deserves.

I wished they also made Operation Asteroids and Peril in Peru have been made into a proper classic Thunderbirds episode just like the other three episodes done by kickstarter.

What a project - amazing stuff.
What a lot of people might not appreciate is that Gerry Anderson's projects helped to create clever and innovative people who then went off and worked for Kubrick on his films like 2001, Lucas with Star Wars and the James Bond films etc etc.
Anderson did more for the British film industry and our culture than anyone could ever accurately quantify.

Every week on a very specific day, I used to push myself over my friend's house to watch Cpt Scarlet on a black & white TV bringing along with me some paprika chips. My mom in those times could not yet afford the luxury of having a television

Bronx NYC 1970's .....wow, we loved this BBC show...the best! Exciting.
We watched this, we watched Kimba the white lion, we watched Speed Racer, Astro boy.
International cartoons where incredible to us, the art was wildly better than American cartoons, except Fritz Freleng, he was great in his own regarding with popeye, pink panther and such, but we absolutely loved the international content and the marionation (Marionettes).

Amen. It's always fascinated me; how a model/prop looks in real life versus the camera. Also, say with Star Wars "found" props, I can't figure out if the weathering was done prior to filming, DUE to filming usage, or AFTER filming.

This has put my faith back into the human race when it come to the screen. It is because they are not real is why they are real and so pleased to see these wonderfyl people who respect the original concept. The word FAB really is so fitting.
This would be cool. We love the Thunderbirds and still watch it on cold rainy mornings. Bringing it back without CGI would be awesome. Try to carry it on. Different show but along the same lines, “SIG”.

Think stage "make up" for models. Yeh I may have done a bit in the past, but the guy you really need for this work was a bloke form Rhyl I knew 30 years ago. He was the definitive modeller for anything Anderson.

America wants to see the anniversary episodes!! I have 2 thunderbird clocks, a phone case, all 3 main Thunderbirds toys, the thunderbird game boy game and own all the episodes. What more can I do to prove I love thunderbirds!!

The camera stock/process used (even for this feature) looks like the old footage. I am surprised more shows/movies don't do this sort of thing (mimicking old film stock/lenses/etc). It really does give the material the vintage feel. For instance the Mary Poppins sequel from several years back could have been made 50% better with matching the original film look.
Gerry Anderson would be very proud seeing how they kept his style of puppet and modelmaking. My favourite kids programme.
