  • This 1924 McCormick Deering 10-20 has been sitting in the back corner of the barn, waiting to come back to life. In this video, I prepare a replacement fuel tank for use by cleaning it with muriatic acid and soldering some pinholes. In the next video, we’ll get her running again!

    Tip for drying tanks: put a shop towel or even a few paper towels inside it and blow it around with an air hose. They will absorb the majority of the liquid.

    Enjoyed this segment of TH-cam. I am an avid collector of kerosene and oil lamps and have had to use a sealer to stop pinhole leaks in antique lamps. W T Kirkman in Ramona, San Diego, Cal. has been providing me with Gas tank sealer for years. You pour it in the cleaned tank and it plugs all the pinholes. Pour out the excess. Lasts indefinitely. Thought that may be a good solution for you instead of soldering.

    Old fashioned lead body filler would work well too. Just follow the breathing rules from the acid while applying/filing. Another great video!

    Peter for a final application use from a Aviation shop a compound called SLOSHING SOLUTION.
    I have used it on aircraft tanks many times and also old motorcycle tanks.
    I have also used it to seal leaks in the floats (pontoons) of aircraft. I swear by it.

    Wd-40 is water displacing.
    Alcohol is hygroscopic.
    Consider using flux on the solder.
    Liked.

    To dry the tank after the water pour high proof methyl hydrate (aka wood alcohol) drain that and use the hair dryer on cold setting for ten minutes then on heat for a few minutes.

    Nice I remember a old farmer near me when I was a kid had a immaculate new old stock set of wings and a hood for a 15 30 by the time I was old enough to realise what they where and how hard they where to find he had passed his kids didn't care much for the tractors and sold them. They didn't know what I was on about when I enquired after them they probely scraped them when clearing out his stuff nice work there do you know what years they made painted them red I thought it was right at the end of production

      International switched from gray to red in 1937. This tractor's was originally gray, and has been repainted at least twice during it's lifetime (there's blue under the red paint). Lots of these old tractors got scrapped, and I've made it my mission to save as many as I can ;)

    Pete, on buying a front loader or tractor, is it worth spending the extra money for a newer four wheel drive version? There is certainly a big price difference. Do you know how big of an advantage four wheel drive is? Thank you for your wonderful videos.

    • @JustaFewAcresFarm
      @JustaFewAcresFarm  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Mike, we don't have any four wheel drive tractors, and get along fine through mud & snow. But we are also running older, heavier tractors with loaded tires. If you're buying a newer small utility tractor, 4 wheel drive is more important because they're lighter, especially with a loader taking traction away from the rear tires. This is assuming you're going to be using it in slippery conditions. If not, 2WD is fine. The thriftiest choice is to buy an older tractor (from the '60's or '70's), but it requires some mechanical know-how to keep running.

    I'd wear gloves and I'd be tempted with a mask if I was using that acid... and I used to occasionally light myself, or a petrol can, on fire, so I'm hardly that safe!
