    There’s also a problem that as studios get less willing to take risks, comedy films have gotten lazier and more formulaic. And while that’s an issue with any genre, it absolutely kills comedy because half of what makes something funny is it being unexpected or clever in a way you couldn’t have thought of.
    My buddies in college and I even made up a game where we’d pitch lazy comedy films to each other where it was always “(Actor/Actress) and (Jason Bateman/Melissa McCarthy/Kevin Hart) are (relationship) and have to go to (place) because of (misunderstanding).”

      Yea seriously. The more disney takes over, the more other studios will attempt to copy their formulas with minimal risks

      Are you sure it isn't because people are more aware than ever about who is sitting on the throne of cultural leadership and they just don't find old jokes funny anymore? Let's imagine that someone makes a movie about the 3 stooges today, would that be funny? Not really. They tried. The three stooges would not work because in the past they were a joke/parody about the real people of high society and how ridiculous they were. Another example is the Monty Python movies who made jokes about all the ridiculousness of their own high society.
      Today, the Internet took over that throne and the solution seems simple enough: make jokes about the new person that sits on the throne with the big crown.... buuuut, now studios don't want to carry that label, they are too afraid of putting their names on movies that can be judged harshly 10 years from now. And that is self-censorship,
      Suffice it say this: maybe people aren't interested anymore because the jokes don't make sense to them anymore because you have nothing to compare them too. You can watch a slapstick movie today and wonder: why are these people hitting themselves when you can go to jail for that? You can't watch a romcom because people are thinking "ah, they had one argument, well they are wrong for each other"?
      Comedy is the supposed to be funny because it jokes about everything that's popular, powerful or dumb. And today, it's just not allowed to joke about those things.

    • @danhair
      @danhair 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @E Anyone who has the power to take away your livelihood by simply blacklisting you from the culture is basically sitting on a throne and deciding what the culture is or who gets to be in it.

    • @danhair
      @danhair 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @E As long as you leave room for context, and if you don't just block people from the industry I am okay with that. One example I can think of is that movie with Martin Lawrence where he plays a wannabe carjacker and gets stopped by a stereotypical cop who then tries to defend him from a bee because Martin's character is allergic to them, he gets filmed and gets charged for a racial crime because he is only seen swinging at Martin's direction.
      Context is what makes the difference between joke and crime.

    • @boobah5643
      @boobah5643 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@danhair There's only one problem with this thesis: It would indicate that someone watching the old films wouldn't find them funny. _Duck Soup, Batman_ '66, and _Airplane!_ are all still widely regarded as hilarious. "Who's on First?" in all its wonderful permutations is probably the best known comedy sketch on the planet, and a well-done rendition is still sure to get applause.
      The idea that comedy is always and everywhere about power dynamics is... not worth discussing, except to note that it's hilariously wrong; "Who's on First?" isn't a power dynamic; it's a guy who can't understand he's confusing and the guy who is confused, but can't explain how, while both are crystal clear to the audience.

    This entire decade has been dry for comedy films. The 2000's had like 50 iconic comedy films (including Superbad, Tropic Thunder, The Hangover), but this entire 2010's decade maybe only has like 5 iconic comedies. I'd say some of the best two are in the Jump Street series.

      @@theanchhaybun6077 But if you tried to elicit organic laughter for a doc about 9/11, even today, it be all "Too soon, you're a fucking monster". Which is funny in itself. Because here in the UK, we were joking about how it was "the best three dart finish we'd ever seen" and getting lots of laughs. And this was actually on the day as a response to watching the New York footage, then hearing another plane had hit the Pentagon.
      Now, while I have to say that crashing planes into skyscrapers and killing thousands of people isn't funny, the jokes that come from such events, *can* be funny. Hideously inappropriate jokes about horrific things are how we, as a species begin to heal from such culturally impacting events. So yes, I laughed. And I'd laugh again tomorrow. Comedy doesn't care about your feelings. Every time comedy is forced to consider people's feelings, the horror wins. If we can't laugh at the horror, we are doomed to carry it around forever, and no-one's got time or energy for that. Except maybe the Christians. Just try cracking a 'Jesus was on the Cross' joke at Church if you don't believe me. They no longer burn you for that shit, but some of them wish they could. *That's* what we're essentially dealing with.

    It’s not that comedy is dying, it’s that nobody in Hollywood is funny anymore. They have the step by step formula for what comedy should be and how it should work, but they don’t have the writing/acting/natural charisma/characterization/personality/relatability/character chemistry/heart/spirit/soul to back it up or pull it off. It’s hollow, sad, and try’s too hard, like that one annoying kid in middle school that’s always making unfunny jokes and begging people to laugh with him, because he thinks that will make him popular. Most of it is unfunny, hard to watch, out dated before it even comes out, and just makes you sad to see your favorite actor/characters be forced to parade around like puppets on screen force to follow some blood money script written by random corporate marketing executives.
    Tl;dr- Real comedy is timeless and worth being seen by everyone, regardless of arbitrary demographics. Hollywood has mostly forgotten this in favor of fart jokes, lowest common denominator marketing, and desperately begging audiences to find them funny. It’s gross.

    13:49 another objection. Peele isn't making horror comedy. It's just horror. Horror comedy would be terrifying as well as comedic. Comedic moments in horror helps by making the situation more believable, either by establishing characters or connections, or levitate tension, and on occasion being the curve ball to ramp up tension.

    Thor Ragnarok was the best comedy I've seen in years, and I'd go as far as to say that it was more of a comedy than an action movie, or even a Marvel movie. I feel like it's less of the genre dying or something like that, but a transition to having to actually be funny now in a new way.
    Sure some of the older movies were funny, but do you know whats not funny? Seeing modern versions of old formulas regurgitated into the same shit but with some hip new slang thrown in.
    No one wants a 2019/2020 version of Dumb and Dumber cos it would be ... well dumb. Take directors like Taika Waititi and I'll show you the future of comedy. Nothing to worry about I say. Funny will find a way and if shows are the way to get comedy than so be it. Great video, as always, however, I'm not sure if I agree this time... I think that MCU superheroe movies and 'pop' movies in general are trying to be like "supermarkets" so you can find whatever you want, no matter what you are looking for... Do you want comedy?, take some comedy, do you want drama? take some drama, do you want action? here, some action... maybe even romance and terror if it fits.
    I mean, cramming togheter all these elements doesnt seem to be the best option to build deep experiences but that's not the goal, they're just trying to appeal a broader audience, to sell more tickets.

  • @jamesburgess2k

    Also, unlike most genres, comedy has become so much more niche and specific in the rise of social media. There's become so many different categories/styles of humor, that still aren't remotely mainstream, that Hollywood has a hard time finding the comedy style that is broad enough to be enjoyed by the most people possible, yet specific enough that its not considered too bland.
    In the past, this would work incredibly, but now with our generation on the internet, and the ability to find the *exact* style of humor you like, we no longer have to settle for the "safe" Hollywood comedy film.

    This is a quality video. However, I do need to add that Booksmart is one of the best movies of the year and Long Shot was also really good. Last year, Blockers and Tag were both solid, too. So it isn't that good comedy movies aren't being made (look at Jojo Rabbit next month) but just that they aren't making box office like they used to. I think it may be a little reductionistic to think of comedy as mainly a mode, when it functions more as genre on TV. That seems like an over-extrapolation of Marvel principles to the rest of the industry. But you're right to see comedy changing, just like Apatow turned the Rob Reiner/ Nora Ephron era Rom-com into the "raunch com" of the 2000s. Still romantic comedy, just in a new way. I'm going to put the blame for "death of comedy movies" on the movie going public, because anyone with Netflix and Prime knows that good comedy movies are still being made frequently.

This helps me explains what I experience when I watch an "unfunny comedy" movie: some unseasoned writers abuse the mode in an attempt to make the genre shift to "comedy", which feels artificial and suspiciously underhanded (because of the blatant "for profit" nature of the late cinematic venture). As a result the execution of jokes suffer, turning what should be laughing rich scenes into eye rolling fests.
    So, writers to be, please stop trying so hard to make comedy gold; it's not working. Better take inspiration on f-word precision strikes. Allow a good rhythm of jokes instead of trying to be 99% funny through your film~ |3

Sony and Warner Bros are barely competitors. The Writers Guild has been taken over by Private Equity. A lot of the great comedies like Back To the Future are extremely weird. When it comes to the comedy in the MCU, I think it also works because to put it simply, a person needs a break, even if it can only be found in making a quip about something. Humor is a well-known coping mechanism. The heroes are basically acting as soldiers and anyone who has been in that kind of job, knows there are times you have to laugh to keep from crying. There's also the ER doctor mindset. Would you rather get treated by a doctor who keeps it together, saves your life, but later makes a tasteless joke when talking about it with his buddies or do you want to be treated by someone who takes one look at you and falls to pieces?

    I stopped watching "comedy" over a decade ago. Used to love stand-up, south park, etc... but eventually just reached a point where deciding "hmmm... I'd like to laugh right now. I think I'll put on a show/movie that's engineered to extract this particular emotion from me" made me feel extremely empty.
    Especially when most of the movies attempting to do this were becoming increasingly cringe-inducing, like Will Ferrell's output. Which is ironic, because he was one of my favorite parts of SNL way back in the day. Just can't do it anymore. I'd much rather be caught off guard by a really good joke in a movie that's not explicitly comedy.

    The the broad strokes are that movies are being less defined by Genre and more defined by Tropes? Makes sense to me. Once you get used to the trappings of a system or genre, it becomes easier to isolate the individual parts and modularize them to be plugged in wherever and to whatever they may be needed. It's what lead to Deconstructions of genres, and it's what's currently leading us through the deconstruction, subversions, and inversions of individual tropes.

    Well, I love comedies. But I don’t need to watch them at the movies, unless they’re something really special.
    I don’t think they’re dead. I think with so many good movies and expensive movie tickets, people rather watch a movie that is enhanced by the cinema experience whereas most comedies don’t warrant a visit to the theaters.
    Also, there haven’t been a lot of comedies in recent years.
    Make better comedies and shit on the international “compatibility”. The comedies from the 80s and 90s were universally funny to people around the world.
    Luckily super hero movies sometimes are really funny like Thor, Ant-Man or MIB.

    I think these producers are also not looking into what kind of comedies people actually enjoy. The trend has been going away from strict comedies and more to mashups of genres like Bojack Horseman with it's goofy jokes but realistic and disturbed characters. Even Parasite had a lot of comedic elements that really worked and I definitely laughed more watching it then any Will Ferell movie. People are just tired of lazy comedies that have nothing to say about reality or it's subject matter.

    Political correctness? Almost every classic has a scene that would be unacceptable nowadays. Blazing Saddles - every scene.

    • @dvklaveren
      @dvklaveren 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Counterpoint; Those scenes were always going to age badly, regardless of political correctness.
      More than political correctness, I'm annoyed by comedians who were being facetious at the time, but aren't when they decry political correctness.
      Like, George Carlin had a bit about euphemisms. When he made that bit, it was insightful, because obviously, euphemisms have their place, while also going too far in many places. But now, people cite that bit about euphemisms like it's the gospel and it's just not fucking funny anymore.
      TLDR; I'd argue that political correctness is just people being annoyed by comedians' standup routines being taken too seriously and endlessly cited, killing the original point. Comedy often searches for the line and crosses it; that is a way to date the routine. The line has moved and nobody should apologize for humor that's dated.
