  • 1968, pretty much the first incarnation of one of my favourite 'folk-rock' (sic) bands of all time (at this stage of their career they were known as the British Jefferson Airplane), featuring Judy Dyble (replaced the next year by Sandy Denny) and Ian MacDonald (Ian Matthews)(who later scored a #1 hit with Joni Mitchell's 'Woodstock' as Matthews Southern Comfort) on vocals, and the world famous singer/songwriter/guitarist Richard Thompson, as well as Tyger Hutchings, Simon Nicol and Martin Lamble, who sadly died on 12th May 1969, aged only 19, after Fairport's van crashed on the M1 motorway. Richard Thompson's girlfriend Jeannie Franklyn was killed too, the rest of the band escaped with minor injuries. I've just been informed that Jeannie was a "tailor" to quite a few musicians and inspired the title of the Jack Bruce album "Songs For A Tailor".
    Written by Tim Buckley & Larry Beckett. From the bands first album 'Fairport Convention' featuring Ian MacDonald (later known as Ian Matthews), Richard Thompson, Judy Dyble, Simon Nicol, Tyger (Ashley) Hutchings and Martin Lamble. Clare Lowther also featured on 'cello. Sadly, this video is not available on some devices such as mobile phones.

    Been a Fairport fan for over 30 years, and this is the first footage I've ever seen with Martin Lamble performing...awesome!

    I've always really liked Ian's voice. The brief time (after Judy Dyble left) that he shared vocals with Sandy Denny was lovely. A couple of years later they recorded the gorgeous "If you Saw Through My Eyes" on Matthew's solo album. His career since then may have been relatively low key, but always classy 👍

    Richard Thompson is up there with Peter Green…Paul Kossoff and Robin Trower when we talk about the great British guitarists. Technically of a very high standard. And here we see a very young Martin Lamble. What a precious rare talent was he. Left us way to soon.

    Sky Vibes - please fix the erroneous "MacDonald" - you later get it right saying this is Ian Matthews. / Jeannie Franklyn was tailor to many rock groups, including Cream. Jack Bruce's "Songs for a Tailor" comes from that.

    • @vibesinthesky
      @vibesinthesky  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi 7777Scion, I'm not sure it is in fact erroneous - if you look at the band listings on the first Fairport album he is credited as "Ian MacDonald: lead vocals, jews harp" so unless they got it wrong back then? I do know his birth name was Iain Matthew McDonald and then I believe he was known as Ian MacDonald / Ian Matthews and in 1989 reverted to the original spelling of his first name Iain Matthews. Anyway, I'm happy to change it in the description to avoid any further confusion! Didn't know the Jeannie Franklin / Jack Bruce fact tho', that's quite interesting.

      Amazing how many people don't know he changed his name to avoid confusion with the guy from King Crimson.
