    My Trinity+ is still going strong. I bought it in 1996 and wrote the Duke Nukem Total Meltdown soundtrack with it, and it's still my master keyboard is it's so playable.

      Oh wow, that's awesome to see you here - I love the soundtrack to that version of the game!
      Glad to hear you still use your Trinity, it's still a wonderful piece of kit and you did great work with it back then.

      @@MarkTDKKnight Hah, figures. Honestly I've played enough of Duke 3D on the PC that a different version of the soundtrack was very welcome in my book :p
      I'm curious, do you happen to remember what else you used when writing the soundtrack? Listening to it now I definitely hear the Trinity in it, and I think a drum loop from the Methods of Mayhem sample CD by Sounds Good AB in "Spacey".

    • @MarkTDKKnight
      @MarkTDKKnight 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@SpeedySPCFan There was lots of Methods through out the soundtrack, yes...
      I had a Kurzweil K2500r on sample playback duties, and a Yamaha RM50 drum module - drums were dealt with by all three though, the Trinity, Kuzzie and Yamaha.

    Finally someone makes a good video focused on the Trinity. Most people just focus on the triton and see it was the first one to have the touch view type display. Are used to have a V3 Pro X model and I loved it. After I got my later workstation, which was an M50 I let a family member borrow my Trinity, they left it plugged in during an electrical storm and I believe the board got fried. So I happen to find a good deal on a TR Rack because there were just some of the sounds that the Trinity model that I had had included that I just could not imagine doing without anymore. I mean it’s combinations are so massive. It has such a great sound for that time period. I don’t believe it was the first 48K synthesizer, I believe that went to the Alessi’s Quadrasynth. But still. 48K was very good sampling back in the mid-1990s.

    Triton is the sound of hip-hop (really a bunch of hip-hop stuff simply asks for the Triton). Trinity is the sound of heaven in your ears. To answer specifically why: it's the filters. Effects not so much, specifically the filters are leaps and bounds better than those on Triton. Also Triton seems to have a lower headroom, which makes it push the output stage harder, which then compresses things in a way that worked for that hip-hop crowd. But it doesn't work for motion sounds that Trinity is known for :)
    I own a TR-Rack and yeah, it's only editable from the computer, but man it sounds tremendous even after all these years. The only other thing comparable sound quality-wise from those times would be a Kurzweil K2500.

    The 32 notes of polyphony was perhaps the Trinity's biggest con at the time when the likes of Roland JV and XP series, Ensoniq MR series, Alesis Quadrasynthe and Yamaha MU series were releasing instruments with 64 notes of polyphony. I spoke to a Korg representative in Australia at the time who said that what the competition was doing with 4 oscillators per voice, Korg was doing with only 2 oscillators with the large amount of DSP also contributing to the true multi timbral fx capabilities that none of the competition could compete with in the mid 90s. I owned both a Trinity Plus and TR Rack and I loved the extra sounds available in the module thanks to the extra 8mb of waveform ROM including much improved piano samples and a stack of new excellent drum sounds that found themselves later in the 1999 Triton. Sadly the Triton didn't get those improved piano sounds though.

    The Trinity touch screen did lag but I just got used to it. The Triton's touch screen GUI was a massive improvement over the Trinity's. The Triton also allowed its LFOs to be synced to MIDI clock, something that the Trinity was sadly lacking. The Yamaha FS keybed feels fabulous to play and was way better than the unweighted Roland keybeds at the time IMHO. My now sold T3EX, O1WFD, Trinity Plus and Triton Classic all had that same fantastic keybed. I rarely used the Trinity's sequencer although I used the Triton's sequencer and really loved its simplicity.

When using various Organ Patches and applying internal Roto-Simulator for fast and slow Vibrato these Keyboards at times only offer half of the effect, thus washing out the entire Organ Tone. I've got Trinity with MOSS and also Z1. They sound slightly different of course. Trinity has a deeper and more rounded bass which is not always an advantage - Z1 is capable of more subtle harmonics, especially with resonance turned up, which makes some pads sound crispier and more detailed in mid and high frequency range. I managed to transfer all my favourite patches from Z1 to Trinity with Moss. Most sound identical, a few lack forementioned sonic subtleties. Had Triton Extreme and sold it - sounded dull and muddy to me, shame on Korg for what they did to the filter. Old Trinity beats it and Kronos soundwise. The filters sing with a bit of resonance - something Triton cannot do. Triton has much sweeter strings though - thanks to larger and updated samples. Anyway, Trinity is a great pad machine, especially with MOSS and 8 mb of my own, carefully selected Roland and EMU waveforms. So much gear, so little time.

    • @ShallRemainUnknown
      @ShallRemainUnknown 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MOSS board is gimped in Trinity because it's NOT multitimbral like it is in Z1 and Triton.

    • @metanoja9804
      @metanoja9804 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ShallRemainUnknown True, but if you have lot's of gear and samplers who cares about multitimbrality.

    • @ShallRemainUnknown
      @ShallRemainUnknown 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@metanoja9804 MOSS is pure multi-modeling synth (not PCM-based) with distinct advantage of generating dynamics and expressiveness. Simply sampling its sound will lose much of that (similar to sampling acoustic piano without multisampling, velocity layers, etc.). You could use sampler's synth parameters to compensate for some of that loss, but it's time-intensive. Beyond that, because MOSS has 13 different modeling algorithms, multitimbrality allows layering full programs based on those different engines. Otherwise you have to dance around that by multitracking on DAW, certainly not optimal. So, I think the Z1 and Triton multitimbral MOSS is a BIG advantage to the monotimbral Trinity MOSS. Another disadvantage is the MOSS board (unlike Solo/Prophecy board) does not have its own CPU, instead relying on the Trinity's already-taxed CPU (slow screen redraws and touch response, even without MOSS) , whereas the Triton has a much faster CPU.

    • @metanoja9804
      @metanoja9804 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ShallRemainUnknown I am aware of all shortcomings of Trinity. CPU performance is not what I am after. I simply prefer the sound of its filters, 48k samples combined with MOSS in combis and output stage to later models. Period. If multitimbrality is your game, stick with your choices and enjoy making music.

    I sold my Trinity Plus to buy a Triton when it came out in 1999. There were obvious improvements in the Triton such as the almost doubled 62 note polyphony, much improved effects routing, built in sampler, 2 more outputs with better routing, LFOs that synchronised to MIDI clock, a better built in sequencer, dual arpeggiators and more responsive touch screen operations. However the overall sound certainly wasn't better and the Triton's filters were certainly inferior. Many of the factory acoustic instrument programs such as the acoustic piano, strings, saxes and nylon string guitar were much better in the Trinity IMHO. Its ribbon was also pressure sensitive unlike the Triton's ribbon controller. I later got a TR Rack that had those much improved pianos and many more drum kits and I came to the conclusion that the Trinity sounded 'better' than the Triton.
    I also owned an 18 voice polyphonic Korg Z1 and it's MOSS sound was definitely better than the Prophecy Solo TRI board in the Trinity Plus. I later had the 6 voice MOSS board in my Korg Triton Classic and it certainly didn't sound as good as the Z1.
    I didn't use the Trinity Plus sequencer much because I had an Atari Mega 4 running C Lab Notator Plus and found the Trinity sequencer quite clunky to use in comparison. I actually found the improved Triton sequencer to be a big improvement, particularly from a user interface and touchscreen perspective. The cue lists and preset templates were big pluses IMHO. A piano roll editor would have been very welcome but that came in the latter Korg M3 Xpanded and Krome workstations. Strangely, the top of the line Kronos sequencer doesn't feature piano roll editing!
    The 2 arpeggiators in the Triton were also a very welcome edition and added a lot to the newer instrument.
    Your review is outstanding. Keep up the great work buddy!

      Yes, only one note at a time on the S Bank. The MOSS-TRI (which occupies the M Bank and replaces the SOLO-TRI) can play six notes at a time.

    1:02 are you saying that the oasys came before the trinity? Wtf

    • @SpeedySPCFan
      @SpeedySPCFan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was supposed to - the OASYS tech came before the Trinity, but was eventually fractured into the Trinity, Wavedrum, Prophecy, and maybe others. The prototype OASYS's from the time even use the same shell as the Trinity.
      The final OASYS that released barely resembled the original under the hood.

      @@SpeedySPCFan the first Oasys was shown at the 1994 NAMM Show and as history has since proven, it never eventuated. The second Oasys incarnation came out 11 years later in 2005. It must be easily the most glorious Korg keyboard ever released!

      @@madness8556 The first OASYS sort of released as the OASYS PCI in 1999. It was still too expensive and lacking in polyphony to catch on, but it's the closest we ever got the original goal of the project. In addition to having a ton of good stock sound engines, it was totally reprogrammable (SynthKit was never properly released, but you could get it by request) on the DSP level to create entirely new ones. It's still pretty sick sounding for what it is (including some genuinely good VA models), and there's nothing quite like it.
      Imagine if Korg actually released an SDK to develop new engines for whatever they're planning to replace the Kronos with, now that'd be a power move. That, or a Studio version with some physical design cues from the OASYS workstation, I'd love a big vertical screen for instance.

    This is still amazing, on an completely different note, remember that guy who’s profile picture has a biten apple on it? Well i’m rightfully calling him out on everything i’m giving him the full-on justice hammer that he deserves, Twitter link is over here: mobile.twitter.com/AlexHoodJpFan/status/1327770856270000129
    Spread the word, and give the world a reason to keep living one step at a time.
    Back to that other note: this video is still amazing, I wonder if there still modern keyboards that had KORG’s key beds on them? They Felt so good if eye witness accounts have to say, are they essential for a good keyboard? 👍🏻👍🏻

      My Triton Extreme died in the middle of video production, sadly, and I ended up selling it. Otherwise one would have already been up by now x_x

      I’m guessing the Triton VST wouldn’t suffice, then? That’s sad if that’s the case.

      @@DupaChunner There's a lot of things for me to go over with the hardware that I can't with the softsynth - the touchscreen interface, the expansion options, the sampler, the reliability of the hardware, the keyboard... unless someone local can donate a Triton to me for a while I won't be doing an episode on it.

      Convince Ketron or someone else to send me one, all expenses paid, and I'll do it. I don't have the cash to spend frivolously on synths, unfortunately... what little I do have is going to replacing my now dead Triton Extreme.
