People long departed and yet here they live on, their essence trapped by light and recorded by flecks of silver halide. Those shots around St Vincents show a very quiet Melbourne but also the genius of the planers of the time who created wide boulevards in anticipation of a future with far more mechanical devices for transport.
    Thank you for the upload.

Hook turns on city intersections and cable car trams on some lines mixed up with W Class trams on others. Interesting. The Melbourne of my father.

Many thanks Leo. I really enjoyed your upload. Interestingly, my father would drive his father's 1925 Chev around our hometown (Castlemaine) when I was about 5 years of age. This was back around 1958. I always felt slightly embarrassed due to the fact that cars had changed so much. Often it had to be started with a crank handle. Also, the petrol gauge was a piece of dowel with notches in it!

It was not much different in the 40's. I remember these scenes well. Lived in Carlton until late 1950 and nothing changed much at all in that time.

    Thank goodness for digital media.
This would possibly have been lost without it.

Each of those vintage cars would be worth hundreds of thousands right now if they'd survive. This is so surreal

Absolutely fascinating. These sort of films are so much more life - like, natural and revealing than most of the newsreel footage of the era. And so interesting to actually see the cameraman as well. I like to slow them down to half or even a quarter of normal speed to really study the action. Would love to know what sort of camera Robert was using

Thanks for the comments. I don't know what camera Robert was using. It was a 16mm camera but I have not been able to determine the make or model.

as someone researching a period film, it's these sorts of sources we usually look for to understand how people really behaved in day to day life, instead of performing

Everybody going about their business and all now deceased. Sort of puts life in perspective doesn’t it.
