I’ve ordered! This suits my workflow very well. Which to be honest is very simple and sample based. 1. Drums, 2. sample chops, 3. Bass, 4. Whatever else! The aim of this machine is to make for quick, easy workflow, which is exactly what I want!
@@keepitgrimy I don't think there's anything like being able to automatically chop a loop into 16 parts or by transition or anything. My chopping workflow is more manual, such as finding a chop I like then copy / paste and repeat. Although I'm concerned as I couldn't see anything in the manual about being able to copy and paste drum samples from one pad to another, surely it can do this!
I think the four track limit is a bit overstated. There are four tracks, true. But they can be drum tracks if you want. And drum tracks each have sixteen pads that *you can sequence chromatically.* This is new, it doesn’t exist in Live or on Push. That means that a single drum track is really 16 sub-tracks. It reminds me a lot of Maschine in that way. A drum “track” here is more like a “group” in Maschine, where you have sixteen sounds that can be sequenced independent, including chromatic notes. This is potentially a huge workflow improvement, and I really, really hope they add the ability to play drum rack pads chromatically in Live/Push, as well. If you set up the Move with four drum tracks, then you effectively have 64 tracks that can all be sequenced independently. So four “tracks” officially, but you can have a lot more than four sounds. You can even have a lot more than a drum kit and three more sounds (like on Seq-Trak, for example). I think we’ll find the four track limit to be much less of a limit in practice once we get our hands on these things. 😁 (This is all assuming I’m understanding this correctly from all the videos I’ve watched! Possible I’m wrong, but I don’t think so :)
Connectors are one of the most expensive things to put on the devices. It's not about how much the component cost, but how much it costs to have it there.
Given that you can load different kits on the same track, and fire clips off in different combos, the four-track limit doesn't seem so bad. Considering the device is polyphonic, that helps too--devices like the Digitakt and Tracker are mono, and you'd have to blow four tracks to get full chords anyway. For the price, it seems good, and if you don't have Llive, they include Into for free, which is $100, and surprsingly capable. So...decent enough. I'll give it a shot. Hopefully they update for more synth/sample editing. The interface is elegant, too.
There are 4 tracks, but you can set them up as drum racks, which would effectively give you 64 tracks if you produce with samples and one-shots. Additionally, you can resample or print synth tracks to a pad in a drum rack track. It’s not as limited as some might think; it’s actually pretty good compared to other machines in the same price range, such as the MC-101, KO-2, SP-404, P6, OP-Z, Digitakt, and even the OP-1, in my opinion. The fact that you have USB-C for charging with a power bank, a battery life of 4 hours, and built-in speakers is impressive, especially in version 1.0. I’ve got one, it’s awesome! It’s definitely not a Push 3 but it’s not supposed to be. It’s a sketchpad for Ableton, great build quality, midi capture, very intuitive and a better way to look at it is 64 tracks (4 x drum racks) with 4 output busses. The speakers are adequate, like laptop speakers. You won’t be blown away but they will do. Lots to like about it if you can think outside the box and aren’t hung up on needing a huge display! I really like this device. It is quite expensive when compared to the sonicware or Novation grooveboxes. But it is truly mobile, and it has separate buttons for the steps in the sequence vs the pitch so it will have a pretty fast workflow for step sequencing melodies. I definitely think this is going to be an excellent groovebox.
when it comes to sampling, would this be the best time stretching/pitch shifting algorithm in standalone though? Abletons warp is miles ahead of the mpc, circuit rhythm, kaoss*, i would use this as a sample through maybe for some other gear if its any similar.
Personally I like the 4 track limit. I think it will push me to be more creative and deliberate with composition. Also you can get really creative with the samples on pads in the drum track. You could even do a project with 4 drum tracks with lots of snippets of audio, bits and pieces, pads, one shot melodic elements on the pads. You can end up hypothetically with 4 times 16 sample slots with all its own sequences
This. A mic input would have been nice but the SP and MPCs have that already for deeper machines. Bouncing stuff to samples isn’t a bad idea at all, and not a new one either. If I need to chop stuff up I figure I’d do that on a proper DAW and import them as samples anyway. Auto chop might be a nice feature for them to add later in firmware along with more fancy sequencer stuff but keeping it simple and forcing focus on the core musical ideas is a great direction vs kitchen sink devices that the market already has plenty of. I only wish the P-6 was $20 more and had this same screen. Otherwise very fun device too.
Can I customize the drum rack? So for example an edited Amen break with my own samples on pads 1-11, pad 12 a timestretch snare and pads 13-16 FX?! And does that mean I could theoretically program 64 samples simultaneously in the step sequencer? That would be four Digitakt 2 😅🤷
If Ableton Note had a sequencer I wouldn't have been able to justify ordering this. The fact that it can also be a control surface for Ableton 12.1 is a plus. I wouldn't be surprised if a future update doubles the number of track.
Flow-wise, It looks to me like a super advanced pocket operator, which I think would be a lot of fun to play with-definitely more like a pro toy than a super serious piece of production gear.
screen choice is really disappointing to me. imagine this device, even with the screen from old Push 1. it'd give you info on all 8 knobs parameters at once. The push 1 was cheaper than the move at launch too, i'm sure they could've afforded to put that screen in the Move. The screen kills the device for me. One parameter at a time for 8 knobs is always clunky. If they figure out way to make your iphone/android as an external screen, maybe it could save this device.
REALLY glad you posted this, I so wanted to get your take on this. I actually kind of love that it's 4 tracks, I cut my teeth on a cassette 4 track back in the da. Meeeeemmmmorrrriiiieeeessss...... Does not seem limiting to me, just fun. I'm really intrigued by the Move, may even order today.
I’ve been using Push 3 Standalone for a little over a month now. Haven’t had an issue with it being slow. I promised myself I’d buy Move if a.) the price was right (under $500 USD) and b.) it suited my needs for a portable device (it does.) Ordered from Sweetwater and I’ll have it in-hand Thursday. My use case is similar to the use case I have for my Polyend Tracker Mini. Finally, hooray for Live 12.1 going final! Hope you’re doing well, Jade - appreciate your opinions.
The Push 3 is amazing and easy to use. The warping and sample control are solid. Not sure where this fits in without warping? Warping and a screen on top would have been a Push Mini. Would have bought that. But great work Ableton - like seeing this.
I had my doubts at first. I really wish it had sampling through USB-C in, or BT, better sample chopping, among other things. But I got to thinking about it, seeing the workarounds to the 4 tracks. Chromatic scales on drum tracks makes this have an ASR workflow in a snap, copying samples and changing start points will make chopping fast and more organic, effects are already on the knobs, updates and additions like custom racks are coming in the future. I've been using Ableton a long time, nothing like it, and I picked it up years ago because there really was nothing "LIVE" like it. Ableton was made to work on the fly in performance and that really helps to get ideas in fast. I've added a 404 and MPC, but the workflow can be tedious and the menu diving annoying. I went ahead and put in my order. I'm not going to sit on the sidelines and down-talk this one. I have a strong feeling that people are going to make this thing go stupid in ways we have not thought of yet.
I had my finger on the “buy” button on the Ableton site, but then I watched some reviews - like this one! - to see what it does, in depth, and realized I have a groovebox problem. Love ‘em, but rarely use ‘em. I love the idea of the Move, features look great, and the four track limit isn’t a problem for me. BUT. I’d mostly want it to play live shows, and I almost never do that any more. I will dive back into my SP404 MKII for that. I was really missing a hardware sampler until I got the 404. I don’t love the pads on the 404, but I love pretty much everything else about it.
Note is amazing if you have traditional headphones with a good seal. So you’re spending money on good wired headphones or the stock apple headphones work well with your ears. Bluetooth ear buds render it near useless. And the workflow is actually cumbersome compared to the move.
th-cam.com/video/T86p2CDrsJo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=2KC2aHcgXAOYNnmN Buci shows the speaker but they sound pretty good. @ 5:36, she’s outside, a good 4-5 feet from the camera, and it sounds pretty good.
I'm an Ableton fanatic... But this other device... Sonicware Lofi XT is 399.99. Does 8 tracks, sampling, full on recording... So... Why? I used to think that perhaps an MPC One might do the trick too, as I can transfer tracks to Live without much fuss. But this little guy is super light.
Move seems pretty robust for the price, good storage, decent sample length, mic, little battery. usb host! , sampler, pretty good step length, but then the fact it has clips, yeah you could write songs on this. The M8 outclasses it in about everyway but not everyone likes trackers. As someone that uses a lot of 3 or 4 track trackers, 4 tracks is fine, but on a tracker you can change instrument per step, here you can't but.. you can put multiple drum tracks with 16 pitch, can't recall the drum polyphony per track, but that opens it up a lot. I used to be a gigging guitarist and I have bought so many 1/4 inch cables in my life, just non stop breaking them. Have been gigging with 1/8 cable synth gear and never had to replace a cable. I just don't think it's an issue I'd even say I'm happy to see 1/8 in cables on a portable device, way less stuff to carry. I don't have ableton live or any interest in it, but I think the move seems pretty good. I think Ableton did a good job with this though.
you're saying its an entry level device but $450 is prosumer range. It's not professional pricing but there's a lot of full feature gear at $450. Will I get this over a sp 404 mk2 Novation Circuit or ko 2? idk maybe. I really want to like this and will probably buy it cause it fits my needs of wanting a portable ableton device but there's a lot missing. Saying its a entry level device makes it sound like they're going to have a Move+ out next year more powerful with more tracks and FXs.
One of the review videos previewed the speakers. Sounded exactly how you'd imagine a speaker of that size to sound. Definitely meant to sketch and reference not to jam with
What would be good with this, is if it was like something like the K.O 2 but you could easily export the project files straight to Ableton to make any on the fly creativity later easily built upon to a full tract in a DAW… that will obviously the the edge it has over things like the SP-404 or K.O 2 etc. I’m sure there will be more to the 4 tracks also and if there’s a really good resampling function with it that there’s a way it keeps all stages of the original content to export it to a DAW so you can do kinda what you do with the SP-404 but also have the original files to further be more creative in the DAW. Maybe as well instruments wise, you can have multiple instruments on each channel and be able to have multiple playing with separate midi input playing on each track and again that all become separated in the DAW… this is probably ambitious… but maybe not… because maybe it acts like the original OP-1 but with easy part separation in the DAW when you export to make it a full track. If it can do this the unbalanced 3.5 ports then do not matter as they are perfect for on the go production and once in the DAW your studio setup takes over. It’ll them just be about how when it works with other units for it to become a great piece in a mini gear setup or any setup.
I think the people saying “OMG for $449 I can buy a ENTIRE STUDIO!” are kind of missing the point and are probably comparing apples to oranges: it’s a good thing that this is standalone, as nothing beats physical knobs and hardware for capturing inspiration quickly. Also, regarding the track count, it’s worth mentioning that the new Ableton drum sampler has pitched sample playback, so you easily have your bass sound sitting within the drum rack along with drum hits and melodic one shots. What’s more, you can resample the output into a drum pad if you run out of tracks for your melodic instruments. (In case you can’t tell, I’ve ordered mine)
I like it, it's like an mc-101 that doesn't take a minute to load another project you could play a minimal little set with this I think if it had 4 additional midi tracks it would have softened the n blow with the track limit but then again they might have had to add a Mini midi out haha Stay safe in the storm 🙏
I hope the Push 4 comes one day with ARM chips. I do wonder if the thickness comes from the connectors though, having full size stuff on the back the connector needs a lot of space. Haven't seen one tore apart but used to work for places that make adapters for computers and those connectors make things thicc. I spend a lot of time at soccer practices and while I love my machine plus for it something smaller with a battery to poke at is a fun thing. Looking forward to seeing what people who know what they're doing do with it too. I've been using note but finding it frustrating, though it does 8 tracks heh. Should be fun. Stay safe from the storm
I think its dope but can see how its unappealing to MPC/SP users or anyone who doesn't already use Live, I ordered it since Ive been almost exclusively working in Live lately using all the internal FX and compressions so this is perfect since I was considering a Push anyway.
For the missing track, a fw update adding at least one transversal audio track per set to which we could freeze and bounce one of the tracks would make it good enough for the size/price. The lack of as least TRS MIDI is a big miss definitely. Can be solved with a USB to MIDI adapter but then welcome to dongle-world… I would consider it only if they add a few features like sidechain and some vocal FX, for now I let the hype pass, just like I deep with the Roland P6 😅 At least this will push (no pub intended) Akai to get into the « mini world » sooner rather than later, who knows ? 🤷🏻♂️
I own the Push 3 and will pass on this one (maybe wait for the Move 3). Push 3 is heavy and bulky you're right, not portable at all. But it's not slow, and I hope it gets better with today's update. I need to try that out. Take care! ⛈🌧
if you already have ableton, then this is a no brainer. I was just looking for a smaller controller to work standalone and with my ipad. Was about to pull the trigger on a Seqtrack or ep-133 and this is the same, except it integrates right into Ableton now. Also, for live performances, it will be a great controller instead of using my push.
@@minimal3734 for sure. As an Ableton user it's a perfect replacement. Also, the tracks are polyphonic, as opposed to the monophonic tracks on the circuit Rhythm and the drum tracks on the circuit tracks. I never really used the MIDI connectivity on my circuits either, so this thing is sounding better and better.
Looks cool, but i'm good with my mc101 for that kind of synth workflow so i'll pass. Right now i'm gassing for the p6, even tho i shouldn't need another sampler 😅
Dennis Alexander aka nutso thinks 🤔 it's a good idea to be like liven lofi 12 price wise. Is there effects, gonna check out the video 📹 on it. Look forward to seeing 👀 you're take on it when you get your move on.
i have novation circuit rhythm much better device and form factor than this but it doesn’t have good sampling capabilities even it is just a sampler, i would go for this for sketching just because it is integrated with Ableton live. That’s the only catch for me. 4 tracks is a bummer.
In term of price it is „okay“ for a new product this time but i get my mpc live mk1 for 380.- .. it is more to me than the move can be.. just to say! Get you an older version of the mpc and enjoy the same system than the newer one have!
They couldn’t add paging on these features? 4-8 tracks, more scenes, more drum racks etc just add paging and it’s interesting. Also slice mode is only available when in control live mode. Bleh 😢
As much as I absolutely love Ableton as a DAW, I feel like they flopped on this one. To an extent, I think they failed to deliver on a lot of aspects for standalone on Push 3 (not the exclusion of arrangement view, though, I don't think that's completely necessary).
Push 3 is awesome I can do live sets with it no problem. No crashes yet 🤞 The move does look cool but i wish it had 8 tracks like Ableton note at Least, feel free to check out some of my live sets, thanks for the video :-)
Really disappointed that it can't really handle midi out except for when using Live. Can't receive or send CC, no midi mapping. Nothing in the manual even mentioning midi channel, so it's pretty much a no go for controlling external gear. The 4 track limit is also a bummer, although the drum track workaround wouldn't make that alone be a deal-breaker for me. Would also like if it had more Live instruments, especially Operator. Maybe that can be a firmware update? It's a pretty good standalone grooovebox otherwise, but I think I'll have to pass for now,, considering I akready have several, more versatile instruments in that category. Maybe when there are cheap used ones after a while and some firmware improvements I might pick one up.
I’m saying move on. Four tracks is super limiting. I’m sure some wizards out there can make do, but for me it’s a dealbreaker. The ins and outs also killed it for me.
The pads on the drum kits have 16 levels, so you could sequence the drums, bass and melody inside the same track. 8 tracks would`ve been perfect though
I mean, you could get a Linnstrument 128 which is about the same price as the Push but it's smaller. The idea of controllers which are proprietary to a specific DAW feels weird to me. Also, very nice of Ableton to copy the Novation Circuit 9 years later and claim it's a new device.
"I ordered the Move because I travel a lot, and if it runs as well as my Push 3 Standalone, I'll be more than satisfied. So far, it has only crashed once since its release, while all my other devices tend to freeze more often, especially the Maschine Plus - a really terrible device."
I am disappointed with Ableton hardware. I was hoping to be able to completely use just Ableton for my needs as it’s my primary daw. However everything they release just lacks what I need for me to be able to commit to the hardware.
Ordered a Move to play with my kids with. I figure it’ll be a fun casual low-stress low-stakes self-contained machine. Push 3 is underpowered because they went with Intel instead of ARM. X86 is not what you want for power efficiency and speed. Phones now are as fast as desktops in things that matter, like JavaScript execution performance. Hopefully it doesn’t have that terrible “soft touch” fake rubber plastic finish that gets sticky after 3 years. I refuse to buy products with that coating as only really strong chemicals like toluene can remove it, and those can damage other plastic parts easily or just leave a nasty smell.
Yeah for the same price i could get sp404 mk2 or i could get mpc one, or second hand digitakt, or ep 133 Ko and catch a flight to amsterdam and hotel for the night and maybe still have change 😅 i wonder whats making so many companies dip their toes into the dissapointing, featureless, wildly incapable portable devices market
It seems to me that it will be a cool idea starter... leave it by your bed.. sample yourself snoring. Or ask your wife or husband or your sister.. anyway.. The wifi and resampling sold me, though I know it's not the perrrrfect whatever.. it's a quick sketcher and a good way for some like me to get into Ableton.. there's the note.. but as always humans want gear..lol..

I'd like to havew Audio Tracks, even if you can't warp them. (There are also simple warp methods vs the compicated ones of ableton desktop)
I'm in too! can't wait to MOVE ;)
Not for me, though, I also don't use Ableton much and primarily want to be able to record my instruments, which mainly use 1/4".
Note is amazing if you have traditional headphones with a good seal. So you’re spending money on good wired headphones or the stock apple headphones work well with your ears. Bluetooth ear buds render it near useless. And the workflow is actually cumbersome compared to the move.

Buci shows the speaker but they sound pretty good.
Move 2 will be amazing :)
you're saying its an entry level device but $450 is prosumer range.
Actual musicians can make music in this thing tbh.
I. Am maschine user, I do set up through ableton for linear recording.. hmmm ? ✌🏼
One of the review videos previewed the speakers. Sounded exactly how you'd imagine a speaker of that size to sound. Definitely meant to sketch and reference not to jam with
Nice input. Good luck with storm.
Everyone else: On no only 4 tracks 😢
LSDJ users: *Laughs maniacally* 👹
I like it, it's like an mc-101 that doesn't take a minute to load another project you could play a minimal little set with this
I think if it had 4 additional midi tracks it would have softened the n blow with the track limit but then again they might have had to add a
Mini midi out haha
Stay safe in the storm 🙏
I could work with 4 tracks, but I was hoping for at least 8 hours of battery life per charge.
Move's price point: very very competitive.
It’s dope..I’m so glad it’s not a midi controller
I think its dope but can see how its unappealing to MPC/SP users or anyone who doesn't already use Live, I ordered it since Ive been almost exclusively working in Live lately using all the internal FX and compressions so this is perfect since I was considering a Push anyway.
I still have my Push 2 its good enough for me.
For the missing track, a fw update adding at least one transversal audio track per set to which we could freeze and bounce one of the tracks would make it good enough for the size/price.
The lack of as least TRS MIDI is a big miss definitely. Can be solved with a USB to MIDI adapter but then welcome to dongle-world…
I would consider it only if they add a few features like sidechain and some vocal FX, for now I let the hype pass, just like I deep with the Roland P6 😅
At least this will push (no pub intended) Akai to get into the « mini world » sooner rather than later, who knows ? 🤷🏻♂️
I own the Push 3 and will pass on this one (maybe wait for the Move 3). Push 3 is heavy and bulky you're right, not portable at all. But it's not slow, and I hope it gets better with today's update. I need to try that out. Take care! ⛈🌧
They should call this thing Ableton Push 2.5, because it’s 1/2 the size of a Push, and has features of both Push 2 and 3 😂
Stay safe! :)
Move on
I would use it with Ableton not as a standalone. Im tired of carrying around my Kontrol A25
if they could make this a midi device as well and knock off $/£300 I would seriously pick one up.
I know koala is a 1 man show but they did what koala wouldn't and made a hardware form of the app
if you already have ableton, then this is a no brainer. I was just looking for a smaller controller to work standalone and with my ipad. Was about to pull the trigger on a Seqtrack or ep-133 and this is the same, except it integrates right into Ableton now. Also, for live performances, it will be a great controller instead of using my push.
I'm thinking this will replace the Novation Circuit Tracks & Circuit Rhythm for me. Pre-Ordered!
Right, it's like a cross between the two.
I think the Push 3 Controller version is great. I have it and highly recommend it! But this Move? Not too sure about that …
Dennis Alexander aka nutso thinks 🤔 it's a good idea to be like liven lofi 12 price wise. Is there effects, gonna check out the video 📹 on it. Look forward to seeing 👀 you're take on it when you get your move on.
Each of the 4 tracks have 8 clips, so it’s basically 32 tracks.
MC-101 has four tracks as well but no sampling capability
i have novation circuit rhythm much better device and form factor than this but it doesn’t have good sampling capabilities even it is just a sampler, i would go for this for sketching just because it is integrated with Ableton live. That’s the only catch for me. 4 tracks is a bummer.
The Zoia pedal update released with sampling and a sequencer, it can do more then this thing 🤣
Zoia can do anything, Euroboro the euro rack version is like endgame hardware
It looks fun
they needed to use up all those spare push 2 pads somewhere 🤣
It's cool, BUT... I don't know if it as useful as a Circuit.
In term of price it is „okay“ for a new product this time but i get my mpc live mk1 for 380.- .. it is more to me than the move can be.. just to say! Get you an older version of the mpc and enjoy the same system than the newer one have!
MOVE ON!!!!!!!!!
I don't think it was neccerily made to be hooked up with all types of gear.. the USB c and the USB a hub is cool too. You can be creative there..
They couldn’t add paging on these features? 4-8 tracks, more scenes, more drum racks etc just add paging and it’s interesting. Also slice mode is only available when in control live mode. Bleh 😢
yo be safe!
As much as I absolutely love Ableton as a DAW, I feel like they flopped on this one. To an extent, I think they failed to deliver on a lot of aspects for standalone on Push 3 (not the exclusion of arrangement view, though, I don't think that's completely necessary).
Cool device, stay safe the storm is coming our way too :(
Push 3 is awesome I can do live sets with it no problem. No crashes yet 🤞
The move does look cool but i wish it had 8 tracks like Ableton note at
Least, feel free to check out some of my live sets, thanks for the video :-)
4 tracks but you have resampling, long samples per pad and pitched sampler... i e., 16 monophonic subtracks per drum track
I’m saying move on. Four tracks is super limiting. I’m sure some wizards out there can make do, but for me it’s a dealbreaker. The ins and outs also killed it for me.
Limitations breed creativity
Marley Marl did his best work on 4 tracks.
The pads on the drum kits have 16 levels, so you could sequence the drums, bass and melody inside the same track.
8 tracks would`ve been perfect though
I’d rather get an mpc tbh
@@mfknrmxthebangmessiah6012 its 2024 stop it :D
It's a 'move on' for me. If the price was $350 I might consider it
Be safe!
Roland kind of just kicked their butt with a $200 device that can do all this and more.
Ehhh. I like the built in synths. The Roland device has no sound engine.
Roland UX is not great.
Yeah also the mc101 & 707 came out in 2019
@@briannhinton that's a good point that's why I sold my t8
Also why I prefer Korg for "beats"
