And Jimmy was a great mandolin player. This was at the Midsummer Bluegrass Festival in Grass Valley and after his Thursday show he was at Culpeper and Vigene's motorhome having some refreshments, and my friend David Putnam was standing there playing guitar and singing some songs. I ran back to my camp and grabbed the bass and my mandolin. When I got back Jimmy took my mandolin and shredded it for the next hour +, and I played the upright and sang tenor to my friend, who had horses and a band called Tenbrooks, so he was talking Jimmy's ear off about horses. Jimmy's band had been prowling around the campground and when they got back the bass player heard my high tenor and said, "Hey Jimmy why don't you sing Old Crossroads with him". I learned Jimmy liked to sing Old Crossroads when there was a high tenor singer around, like he did with Bill. Jimmy said, " Do you know it?" I said Yes, cause I can usually sing tenor to anything, but I hadn't remembered it was a duet and I really didn't know it. Jimmy kicked off the bluesyist down picking Monroe style intro then started in, "Oh my brother..COMON BOY!" He hollared because I was waiting for the chorus, so I joined in and was able to get verses and all. About a half hour later Jimmy says, " Let's sing Ol Crossroads again" and we did, then he asked if I was gonna come up on stage and sing it with him tomorrow. It was the only song he sang that evening, and the biggest feather in my bluegrass cap. I started a traditional festival the following year in Grass Valley that lasted 15 years, Wolf Mountain.
