I am a novice with fret wraps, thus the reason I checked out your video. I am part Austrian my grandmother was Swiss & Austrian. I just wanted to point out in English a guitar “Saddle” is on the body of the guitar with grooves where the strings lay near the sound hole or pickups are located. The “Nut” is where the fretboard and headstock come together “The Zero Fret.” Thanks for the insight. Cheers 🍻 🔥 🎸🔥🎶🎶🎶…
I have seen many people using this but never investigated about it. 10 minutes ago i finally heard someone talking about the fretwrap (I didn't even know the name of this lol) and after watching this video, i can say that i am grateful for not investigating earlier in my journey, currently I feel very confident with palm muting and that has to be because I didn't get any help from this tool
I use mind behind the nut to erase all the extra noise caused by the strings behind the nut. Everytime i would chug and then mute, you could hear that section ring out. It was pretty loud too. Fretwraps fixed that right up!
My understanding is they're used for recording to get as clean of a sound as possible. Never thought about using them for practice, that's actually an interesting idea.
The fretwrap takes away the muting problem while learning the picking movement. It helps to focus on the clack of the string and to have as less challenges as possible to increase speed and accuracy. Later on when you reached your speed goals you shout put it away and clean out your technique with palm muting the strings. I still use the fretwrap for unplugged tv-practice
This is correct. You should absolutely NOT use a tool like this while you are learning picking technique. Why would you want to learn picking, then have to entirely change your picking technique later, when you take the fretwrap off? Why not just learn the right way to begin with? You just have to lay your picking hand on the strings below the one you're playing - that's it. It's tricky to get it down 100% of the time, but that's what you have to learn to do.
I put them above the nut on one of my basses to stop the headstock ringing. If I ever had an issue, they could be put behind the bridge on a stop tailpiece, to stop ringing back there. I suppose I might put them on the fretboard if I was recording something and going for a really clean pass, but its never come up.
I'm a little low on funds, so I downtune my strat by half a step and clamp my capo on the first fret instead of a fretwrap. Gotta get one of these things.
I think that a capo is not the best choice since it presses the strings against the fretboard. If you don´t like to invest into expensive fretwraps you can also use a hairband or a bandana
you´re right...it´s like making the first steps easier and reducing the challenges a bit and in the end you focus on cleaning up without a fretwrap. I would say it´s a perfect learning tool
1:59 Yeah, I definitely need to get myself one of these, I'm pretty good at playing but damn I can't mute all the unwanted string noise. Thanks for the demo mate! 😊🤘🤘
how about tapping? I is suppose to help clean those up. I find it hard to sound clean on a 7 string guitar as the neck is wider while tapping especially.
Well, it will help you to dempen the unplayed strings and to avoid the tapped overnotes but on a long term you should be able to tap without the fretwrap. Use it to get the riffs under your fingers and to concentrate on the movement but later on you should palm mute the other notes with your picking hand
Fret Wraps usually look nicer with a nice matching head wrap like this guy's wearing see? One should look one's best while playing and that sometimes means Accessorizing, no?
Awesome video. Some really great points here Martin. I have never tried a fretwrap and use other muting techniques to dampen unwanted sound. I guess you cannot play open strings with it right? I reckon there will be some people out there that rely on this tool as a single way to mute strings. What do you think?
It can be a helpful tool to concentrate on the notes first but as you said it is not possible to let ring open strings. I always learn the raw technique with a fretwrap first and focus on muting and cleaning out when I got the basics right
I just tested with my new fretwrap. Tuned without it on, using just open strings instead of harmonics. Then put the wrap on the first fret, and all my notes were flat. I think you need to retune with it on to compensate for the pressure on the strings. Edit to add: this was with a Boss Tu-5 clip tuner on the headstock of a bass.
