    The problem with walking chassis is that they're more expensive and complicated, but also slower, giving no advantages over tracks. I really like the idea of those legs being used on a self propelled artillery platform to help with recoil.
    Still, the walkers are too tall, slow and overwngineered to be a reality, *but* they're a fun concept and a fiction wrighter doesn't need to remove everything cool in the name of realism.

      I could see them being somewhat useful on very steep terrain, but in the end that specific situation probably wouldn’t be enough to justify an entire tank being made like that

    • @justjoking5841
      @justjoking5841 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think the idea is to have broad range of motions and dexterity. Not just have better all terrain capabilities. Tanks are mobile cannons. Walkers need to be like IFV or multi weapons systems.

      @@justjoking5841To justify its existence it would definitely need to have a huge number of roles and responsibilities that would make it being a walker no longer a disadvantage. Like a moving CCP or artillery platform/operations base.

      I think Ukraine is proving otherwise. The mud is too thick for heavy tanks to operate effectively, and due to drones tanks no longer gather in frontline pushes so they instead are used as a mobile form of artillery. If a 'dumb' artillery piece was placed on a walking chassis, and it had fully posable arms that could aim point defense systems upward at drones, suddenly it's a feasible, because the nature of modern trench warfare means tanks aren't going to be a breakthrough anymore, it's about identifying targets at extreme range, and moving after firing.
      Mechs would be multi-purpose artillery and AA systems, not frontline. War has become see-first shoot-first to win, not who can tank the most hits.
      Frontline vehicles would probably take the form of low-flying fast attack vehicles (essentially a buggy with propellers) that are too cheap, move too fast and too erratically to be sufficiently targeted by AT missiles. So there would probably be a return to AT rifles, lol.

      @@TarsonTalon If the terrain is too muddy for a tank it's going to be too much for a walker too. The tracks on tank help to spread out its weight over a larger area thus reducing the ground pressure it creates. The problem with legs on a walker is that unless each leg is attached to a very wide foot, each leg is going to exert a lot of ground pressure even if the overall weight of the vehicle is spread across several legs. So a walker is going to get stuck in the same kind of mud that would stop a tank as each leg exerts more ground pressure than a tank's tracks would and would actually get stuck in terrain that wouldn't stop a tank.

      I'd say the AT-TE would have the advantage in urban combat.
      It brings its own infantry support and can get over and around obstacles better than a traditional tracked tank.
      Plus the mass driver cannon is elevated so it can fire at a downward angle and be more likely to penetrate the traditional tank's thinner top armor, similar to the "pop-up" anti-tank missile attack profile.

    • @hurricaneace143

      I consider it more of an IFV/ APC/ Tank Destroyer/ Mobile Command Post hybrid.

    @manhunter433 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    I agree on the flaws of the AT-TE, I'd modify the design so the driver and top gunner are much better protected. I would also see about reinforcing the legs against anti-armor fire, maybe adding something to the underbelly to deflect explosives from underneath the walker.

    I know the Rebels didn’t actually have it in the lore but the EAW T4-B is probably the most realistic and possible tank for real life as it has tracks. There are cool walkers and mechs in Star Wars and other sci-fi but they aren’t as practical as wheeled and tracked vehicles due to even higher maintenance costs and probably needing more maintenance than tracked vehicles already have. I’d love to see the T4-B and maybe something similar to the T3-B as well. The T3-B though should have its weapon placement modified in my opinion though. Also the Rebel Attack Tank and Rebel Juggernaut would be cool too. The A5 Juggernaut and anything based on it is more feasible due to being smaller than the A6 variant.

  • @Templar327
    @Templar327 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    Could we build it? Hell yeah we could! Would it be effective and efficient? Hell no, I can guarantee the legs would have to be hydraulicly driven and they would blow ALL THE TIME. Plus transporting that thing to and from the field would just not be feasable without a very expensive heli made specifically to transport it just like in the show. But man I would LOVE to get behind the controls of that big sexy lug!

    • @XavierGulleyhoorah
      @XavierGulleyhoorah 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Also it's size and noise are the biggest issues we could probably see these things from miles away and then just lob depleted uranium/ tungsten rounds from miles away
      Edit: forgot how modern tanks are more maneuverable then them

    • @Templar327
      @Templar327 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Exactly. Even if we put some real experimental and THICK armor plating on that thing it'd still get torn to shreds by any modern army. Heck if you know where one's heading an IED would probably shred the bottom of it. We'd HAVE to armor up the bottom of that thing if we wanted to use it. @@XavierGulleyhoorah

      @XavierGulleyhoorah maybe the main body. But the guns are fast enough to swivel around and shoot atgms out of the sky. So theoretically atleast, something like an Abrams could run circles around the walker. But not the mass driver cannon.

  • @Riceball01
    @Riceball01 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    FYI, caliber is not synonymous with weapon, it generally refers to the bore diameter of a gun but it can also refer to the length of the barrel on cannons. Caliber also refers to the diameter and length of ammunition like .50 caliber, 7.62x51mm. and so on. It's also worth noting that a howitzer is not a caliber of gun but a type of cannon designed for indirect fire and can come in a wide range of calibers. Saying main caliber gun is a meaningless term and is not used by anybody when discussing tanks and other AFVs, including self-propelled artillery of all kinds.

    The only sci fi faction that could effectively use walkers would be the Orks of Warhammer 40k due to the fact that their tech works because as someone put, "they believe it works". For everyone else it works because of an oversimplified version of the laws of physics, most commonly referred to as plot armor. The comparison is the torque forces on the very short connection between the drive wheels and the side of the tank versus the forces from the long distances of a walking vehicles legs, particularly on knee joints. Also, if it's not used by actual armies it doesn't work in practice.

    AT-TE: Average
    While the Walker is Can be used in many situations, The best it can really do is Average compared to a much more useful Tanks we have. Along with this walker being too expense for it being an Average piece of tech, however the Walker will excel in Mountains as the ability to climb a 90-degree cliff is very valuable along with its magnetic feet (Though it will be outperformed by Helicopters in most places. If this vehicle was put in the military the best it could get would be an Artillery, Support or Supply post as it does these roles Fairly Average.
    SPHA: Poor
    The Vehicle is like the AT-TE But Larger and can only fire from a fixed position or in other words its worse. A vehicle the size of a Destroyer on land is just the prefect way to lose billions without even trying as it the prefect target practice to solider to learn to use Artillery, the leg to are too short, and the price would just be Insane. This vehicle is only useful to fight Meteors.
    AT-AP: Poor
    This is the AT-TE but cheaper and taller. These would have work if it wasn't too Tall, it didn't have 3 legs, and if it actually looks like it could balance itself. This is just not a good design.
    AT-OT: An Expensive Piece of Trash/ Very Very Poor with (New Funky Mode!)
    The AT-TE but 4x as bad. This is just pointless. It doesn't protect troops it 8 legs are pointless and way to expense for what it supposed to do, and it's just awful all around. it makes it worse because the job of a Cargo hauler can be done better not just by the AT-TE or Army Trucks, but just the average truck which could do a better job than this thing, this is just plain garbage.

    • @hurricaneace143
      @hurricaneace143 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      At-ap only needs the main two to walk. Third leg acts as a brace for firing. Like a bi-pod for an antitank rifle. Also, pretty sure they're supposed to act like tank destroyers

    The problem with walking type tanks is that they are expensive, harder to produce, and are not as easily repairable compared to track based tanks. Offering an advantage in all terrain yet are comparably slower to real life armored vehicles. In a combat situation offers the same to track based tanks but in cases where its leg's is damage, either its front or hind, will cause hard to impossible repair in the field. Furthermore, it has a high profile which can be easily taken advantage of by anti-tank/armored units. The only thing it could be good is a mobile fortress/bunker/gun platform for it may able to sustain or reflect most weapons in a situation where it is unable to move but its weapon systems are fully operational.
