- Got my hands on the notorious Soviet Flamethrower aka pocket thermobaric "vacuum" bomb - RPO-A "Bumblebee" which literally means "Handheld infantry flamethrower"
Well, the Soviets had their own thinking on flames and stuff, but this gizmo is considered to be one of the most destructive and brutal weapons in the world and hasn't aged at all.
Made up specifically for Afghanistan, locals called it literally "Hellish tube", so let us see what 11 kilos of hell can do!

Imagine what happens if you shoot this thing into a bunker system. Something less open compared to the building he has used. The pressure wave running through the tunnels with no way to disperse. Scary as fu....
That was designed to clear trenches and bunkers, even if explodes outside, it's aerosole enters through tiny holes and windows burning everything inside.
That's why it's called flamethrower - same result but much more faster and effective, with no need to risk and approach enemy position too close

It's amazing how now Arsenal of Kazanlak Bulgaria has been able to scale down the Thermobaric (FAE) technology to fit inside 40mm Grenade Launcher rounds! Thermobaric tech is now being considered by the west, but might not fully take off due to other factors.
We've had thermobaric bombs for a while in the US., as for man-portable versions I'm sure Op-Sec is keeping that quiet.

We also have thermobaric projectiles for our MAAWs as well. They are anti structure rounds

As someone who fought with both weapons in Croatian war, not gonna lie US weapons are way better ended. Soviet is cheaper but it's not the same quality, i'll trust more the US gun to save my life. For tanks and vehicle i don't know we only had Soviet ones.
Now i don't Know about the modern version of the AK 12 but the AK 74 we had were really bad. Maybe they were old af too.

The over pressure does cause a vacuum though. It's because the explosion lasts longer than other conventional explosives

It's not the same as a traditional flame thrower, the explosive disperses a fuel into the air before detonating it, as opposed to spraying fuel that is ignited as soon as it leaves the barrel

IMO the people who planned the operation were hoping that the thermobarics would decrease the number of casualties compared to other methods, but as you said, the primary concern for the government in Moscow was probably to send a message about how they wouldn’t negotiate with terrorists, let alone involve the Chechen political leadership in the negotations.
I assume there was also a lot of general incompetence involved where quick medical treatment of the injured hostages could have saved a lot of lives - similar to how many of the victims of the Moscow theater siege could have been saved, had the paramedics been informed that the knockout-aerosol they pumped into the ventilation system was based on fentanyl derivatives, and could have been reversed with naloxone.

It's so over hyped.sure it's a good weapon that has less recoil when fires and can kill tanks but there are many tank killing weapons. just because it has two stage rocket to propel it doesn't mean it's the only system that exist. It's made as a improved weapon than regular rocket launcher and less expensive than a nlaw or a javlin
