55:34 Super small detail but I love how the Aperture logo and font changes throughout the decades both in game but also in the loading screens. Love how the art direction changes as well throughout the decades.
The load screen and logo/company name variations throughout the game are one of my favorite parts. Also speaking to the art direction, its crazy how good they are at the transitions all over the place. Like starting out with the fully overgrown and broken down rooms, to GladOS slowly rebuilding and cleaning up more and more each room. To the decade shifts and seeing the past versions of the buttons/cubes/room elements/surfaces. Such a well made game.
I mean he literally kidnapped homeless people to do experiments with them and ended up murdering a LOT of people through the decades. Actually all of GLaDOS's killing is technically also his responsibility
GLaDOS is a malfunctioning computer. Not entirely her fault she was programmed incorrectly. Cave Johnson is a human being. No excuses for his behavior.
Aperture Science being miniaturized in a secure location (in an old potato) Sotha Sil style wouldn't seem all that strange in the grand scheme of things, actually.
MegMage: "he sounds like um, what's that spiderman photographer, or that Daily Bugle...", "what i really appreciate about this is like, it's the uh 50's" Obi-Wan Kenobi: "Your insight serves you well."
9:49 - *“Experiment discontinued.”* I really wish they had made the audio clips that play when you activate these doors more obvious, because a lot of players pass by this place and never find out about them. I'm glad you got to hear them! 12:47 - *“…But this is a time to be tenacious, okay? Okay, okay, okay. Please don't- Oh my god! Oh my GAAAWWWD! EEEEEEeeeee!”* Excellent tenacity! 👍 17:05 - *“Why isn't it letting me enter?”* Doors generally work best when you try to pass through the _open_ part, rather than through the frame around it. 18:34 - *“Oh my god, I love that it's, like, old! Haha, I feel like an idiot, right now.”* No, that was how we _all_ reacted, when we saw this for the first time. 😁
i never realized it at the time but now with the entire half life franchise behind me it occurred to me that aperture science keeps placing #2 in defense contract awards because the government prefers black mesa.
Honestly, of the playthroughs I've watched of people playing/figuring out this game's story and nuances, yours is one of my favorites. You take a lot of time just talking and figuring things out either logically or intuitively and you do go back/get updated on any things you've missed like Chell's name on the potato project or the Portal comic. Really look forward to more of this series and seeing you figure out all of the story and implications of this game!
The first few puzzles of the playthrough were worrying, but apparently mommy issues create engaged, detail-obsessed brains at the cost of longer-than-average startup times. Haven't been this invested in a playthrough since the '10s
Aperature science being second place in all of their trophies and awards is another reference to Black Mesa from Half Life, there was actually an easter egg in portal one where you can see a powerpoint of Aperture being beaten out every year by Black Mesa in modern day as well
5:12 Haha, you actually didn't look at Chell's project very long. Possibly for the shortest time out of all of them, actually 😅 55:24 You're not time travelling, you're just moving up through the layers of the facility, from oldest to newest.
"Say goodbye, Caroline." "Goodbye, Caroline." "She is a gem." 😂 Buty of history gaming history for you: Portal started love as a game called Narbacular Drop, developed by a small team. Valve saw it and decided to hire that team and turn that concept into Portal. A few years down the road, they did that again with a dev team making a game with physics gels. And thus we got some of the most interesting puzzle gameplay of all time. There's also a great documentary here on TH-cam about the Portal Flash game, which you should watch after finishing the game.
J.K. Simmons (or rather the composite average of all personas he typically portrays) reminds me so much of my Dad. In both the good and the bad ways. He can be reassuring or even nurturing at times, but other times, he can cripple me with the slightest expression of disappointment, let alone an expression of anger. I resent him, but I crave his respect. When I disagree with him, I want to prove him wrong, but I cant help doubting myself. I want to be my own man, but although i may disagree with him, I can never simply ignore his input because I know that fundamentally, he wants me to succeed, even if we define success differently. I both fear and love him. you know, like in a totally normal, psychologically healthy way…
I'm glad that you keep an eye out for the vitrified door messages. They are so funny and I feel like most first time let's players don't seem to find them :D
Dude you did so good!! Breezed through this episode, like 10:50 that elevator confuses ALOT of people. Also youre brain is wrapping around the fact that everytime you see a 45 degree angle surface its time to fly!! thank you for posting these because its so cool watching people get better at problem solving.
lmao I stumbled into this video thinking it was an old playthrough and when I went to check the next part I saw it was uploaded an hour ago. One thing that's cool about like, 10 year gaps is that there's always a whole new generation of players playing and enjoying classics.
59:45 you can reach that door if you jump on that square thing on the ground. There are some other vitrified tests and an easter egg 1:04:30 GLaDOS = *Genetic Lifeform* and Disc Operating System
I love your face as you fly through the Aperture logo. Yes Cave is Voiced by JK Simmons, every time he talks, I think he is going to rant about spider man pictures. Cave CERTAINLY sounds more like a salesman than a scientist to me as well. Man some of these Cave messages are a bit unhinged. This second pump station was the first spot in the game where I got stuck for like 20 min. I could see every possible portal surface, just never made the connection to do the two on the floor at the same time. I even went through the exact same thought process of "well I can't see that when I am up there" I just took forever to actually work out how to do it. I really do love the "time travel" concept of just seeing the decades change as you make it higher up the stack of abandoned sections of the mine shaft. I am still wondering about the orange jumpsuit sign as well. Is it just a "easter egg"/joke about Chell, or just like saying "don't let test subjects in the office area"? I don't know. YOU DID KNEW IT I don't want to answer any of your actual questions for spoiler reasons. But you made the Glados Caroline connection (whatever that ends up being) SO quick! Also I think you are exactly right about her voice being different and why. Like I feel like maybe PotatOS is more "just Glados" compared to when she is Glados+"all of aperture". Kind of like how once Wheatley was plugged into the Glados rig, and had all the power his voice/thoughts/demeanor changed. The lore and storytelling mechanisms in this are so great!
GLAdOS jokingly reveals that more voltage leads to more "scheming". I think with less voltage she is more human than AI, while more voltage makes her more of the calculated evil. Wheatley has the same behavior. And still they are both evil in different ways when connected to so much power.
This is a really good playthrough. You're getting very good at reasoning through the puzzles, and you also are picking up on a LOT of plot, etc (far more than I did my first playthrough)
16:38 Went right by me when I played and might be nothing, but you start the old tests at the "Bottom of the 9th" chamber. Which in baseball terms the Bottom of the 9th is "A Critical point at the end of the game".
Those were in fact ashtrays. Old Aperture is such a neat area. You get to see the history of Aperture. In the next area you learn when GLaDOS was built indirectly.
The first time I heard the praying mantis test bit, I was in silent laughter for ages holding my ribs. Probably one of the funniest bits if dialogue I've heard in a video game, that humor is right up my street.
I love watching someone play through this game for the first time. I think it's one of the best games ever made, definitely a personal favorite. It's just not quite as good the second time around, since you already know the puzzles. So watching someone else, especially someone like you who is just as captivated by it and appreciates the phenomenal writing like I did, is probably as close as I'm ever gonna get to experiencing this game for the first time again.
Those were indeed ashtrays. Remember that as recently as the '70s/early '80s even non-smokers were expected to have ashtrays in their homes in case a guest or contractor was a smoker. In the '50s ashtrays were even more ubiquitous.
As for "did they think of this while making Portal 1?" No, the whole Caroline/GLaDOS thing came about because they couldn't get a voice actor to play Cave's harried assistant so they decided to give Ellen McClain the role and the plot developed from there.
About the voice change, I think GLaDOS' voice is coming out of an old radio in the potato rather than the usual high tech speakers of her old body and that's why she sounds different.
"We're not really learning that Cave Johnson is intelligent." No sir-y, but he is good at selling people products. I wouldn't be surprised if he was in his position mainly just because of his charisma.
When Meg read how the repulsion gel used to be a pudding substitute, it finally made the connection in my brain why it's bouncy. It said that it bounced off of the distended stomach and back up the throat.
I am LOVING this playthrough so far. Your reactions to cave johnson , glados and wheatley are amazing. Also when Wheatly betrays you after you make him in charge: as youre rising in the elevator, and his maniacal laugh turns serious.... gives me chills every time
Yup, that's J.K. Simmons. Also the reason GLaDOS sounds different could just be because she's using a much smaller speaker powered by a potato instead of her usual form.
Your reaction to jumping down the elevator shaft was exactly like mine the first time 😅. I love your play through, it's nice that you take your time to learn and look for things.
I started watching your channel because portal 2 its my favorite game of all time, and I feel like your reactions and your involvement since the first its amazing and I can relate so much, I binge watch the videos in a day! I am super hoock and subscribe inmidiatly and to wake up today and have this upload was like a great way to start the morning haha keep it up pleaseee
I love this game so much. And you're reaction is awesome. You're connecting so much and taking your time to understand the lore. Awesome. At this point you need to play Half-Life next!
When you started theorizing about Caroline and GlaDOS, my head snapped up like “is she talking about Halo? Surely not. I feel like that’s obscure.” But I’m so happy you have like the same background, I really like the sci-fi of Halo

i chose cave Johnson in the divorce. he will probably kill me due to neglect abd dangerous science, gladis would kill me with abuse and just straight murder. plus cave johnson is hilarious.
Omg I'm so used to being able to binge portal playthroughs in one sitting, but this is real time and I have to wait for the next episode like a normal person. I don't like it!! But seriously tho, I'm loving the series so far and cannot wait to see the rest of your reaction.
Brain mapping doesn't exist yet, but its being worked on. AI research is also a work in progress, and is something the video game industry helps out a lot with actually.
Or... he was truly a brilliant scientific mind. But where he grew up he never got the chance to take science classes and was forced to find work right out of high school. So he sold shower curtains and worked his way up.
If you're into the 50s-60s Aperture lore, Portal Stories: Mel is a really good game to play after P2. It's community-made so it's not official lore, and the puzzles are a bit harder, but it's pretty accurate to what most people see going on during that time period. The voice acting in it can be a little iffy, of course they don't have J.K. Simmons voicing Cave, but they do well enough that it's still a really good story.
In case you need a trick to remember JK Simmons’ name: just remember, he’s the JK that *isn’t* transphobic. That sets him apart from that *other one* and helps me remember lol
Cave Johnson sounds like J. Jonah Jameson from Spider-Man because he IS Mr. Jameson. The Actor is J.K. Simmons
Oh my god, why am I only just now realizing this? That's so good! I still adore his Jameson performance so much. 😅
@@Draeckon "I want pictures, pictures of Caroline!"

Yes! Yes please I'd love those reaction videos
They are within EXTRA button in main menu.
Don’t forget Portal Desk Job
Cave Johnson! We’re done here.
“That is not a panel. That’s a crusher. We sell those too.”
GLaDOS: Murdered thousands of people in cold blood
Cave Johnson: "I fired a man in a wheelchair"

They both killed plenty of people
God forbid women do anything
I mean he literally kidnapped homeless people to do experiments with them and ended up murdering a LOT of people through the decades. Actually all of GLaDOS's killing is technically also his responsibility
GLaDOS is a malfunctioning computer. Not entirely her fault she was programmed incorrectly.
Cave Johnson is a human being. No excuses for his behavior.
Cave Johnson is responsible for unethical experiments that killed dozens of people, including himself.
"glados and cave are like the most toxic parents" lmaooooo so real
"What if we're IN a potato?"
You might be the first to propose this theory. I love it!
Aperture Science discovered Pym particles.

The person would eat the blue gel, nothing eaten afterwards would stay down as it would bounce right back out
I am LOVING this playthrough so far. Your reactions to cave johnson , glados and wheatley are amazing. Also when Wheatly betrays you after you make him in charge: as youre rising in the elevator, and his maniacal laugh turns serious.... gives me chills every time
Ah, what timing! Just finished part 3. Great stuff so far.
Yup, that's J.K. Simmons. Also the reason GLaDOS sounds different could just be because she's using a much smaller speaker powered by a potato instead of her usual form.
You were correct, those were ashtrays, because the 50s man… everybody smoked.
48:21 - 54:38
six minutes on this puzzle is just crazy 😭😭
"If it was J.K. Simmons I would know, right?"
Lol.
"I think the most horrible answer is upon me ..." - I cackled out loud.
52:17 "How do I jump??" - Just say 'Apple' :D
3:25 thats him alright lol
There’s a bit of Cave Johnson in us all, throwing science at the walls and seeing what sticks.
Your reaction to jumping down the elevator shaft was exactly like mine the first time 😅. I love your play through, it's nice that you take your time to learn and look for things.
Science smart stuff happenening (idk im not a mathmetician)
Meg "bouncy bouncy!"
GlaDOS is passive aggressive whereas Cave is just aggressive aggressive.
just so you know in this form GLaDOS is Called PotatOS.
Those are 100% ashtrays
I started watching your channel because portal 2 its my favorite game of all time, and I feel like your reactions and your involvement since the first its amazing and I can relate so much, I binge watch the videos in a day! Those are definitely ashtrays on stands

meg : "oh, it's sticky!"
I was waiting eagerly since the last video for this!!!
She’s going through the Games right now, some really funny moments there as well

maybe a very small one, with holes in it
THINK CHELL THINK
It is an ashtray
Awesome Video! Can't wait for more.
I love how the audio for cubes bouncing is just one of those red rubber kickballs
59:47 it's actually a secret door that you can enter by jumping on the little drawer and there's a room if i remember correctly related to Half Life
Hoping for a play-through of the Half-Life games after this
The sad menu song is called: PotatOS Lament
Funnily enough at 52:00, you can technically shoot another portal through portals, but it's really difficult. Like your gun needs to be through but not your character. AI research is also a work in progress, and is something the video game industry helps out a lot with actually.
I have to say you are getting really good at thinking with portals ^^ (Or maybe I'm just much slower than normal... ^^)
Yes, everybody, it's J. K. Simmons voice in this game.
Or... he was truly a brilliant scientific mind. But where he grew up he never got the chance to take science classes and was forced to find work right out of high school. So he sold shower curtains and worked his way up.
Now you are thinking about portals
If you're into the 50s-60s Aperture lore, Portal Stories: Mel is a really good game to play after P2. It's community-made so it's not official lore, and the puzzles are a bit harder, but it's pretty accurate to what most people see going on during that time period. In case you need a trick to remember JK Simmons’ name: just remember, he’s the JK that *isn’t* transphobic. That sets him apart from that *other one* and helps me remember lol
I got jumpscared by a freaking plants when she turns quickly... it looks tall as the same size watafak
J.K. Simmons does tons of voice acting work I am surprised you have not encountered him before now
