Hi. I studied your Iceland videos for many months, booked for Iceland, waited for the pandemic to end, and finally went this June 2021. My wife and I (60+ years old) lived in a camper van for 2 weeks visiting many spots inspired by your Iceland guides. Magic. Many spots would been very hard to discover without your guides (Hvitserkur, Kvernufoss). I now find myself watching the videos all over again and dreaming of returning. Thank you for you guides. My photos will be seen by very few, but they are very special to me and I love them.
About four years ago, I was 15 years old and I was very lonely. I was almost always sad. But I tried to stay positive and always looked for sunsets/sunrises because they are beautiful. Then two years later, I was still lonely and still sad. I also had so much anxiety back then. One night I looked up in the sky and was amazed. It was like a wake up call to me... . I needed to overcome my anxiety issues to finially live like I want. And this got me into landscape and astrophotography. It still helps me to overcome my anxiety and lonelyness and is a good medicine for me its like meditation a bit.
That sounds both sad, but also fantastic that you've found a way to overcome/control it! Thanks for sharing your story :)

As someone who's followed along your adventures virtually the past 5 years, it's impressive to hear this unscripted lesson be just as true today. Thanks as always for sharing what you do Mads.
I think one if the biggest challenges for a lot of people, using myself as an example, is not knowing how they want to represent themselves through their art (photography or filmmaking), and for many it’s a long process of discovery, practice, and ‘finding oneself,’ no matter how cliche it sounds. Set aside the need to gain fame or followers and focus on what YOU want to capture and what truly inspires you and makes you feel more alive the more you do it. Instead of trying to imitate the process of successful people, just thoughtfully create what you want to create and present it as your passion and you will naturally gain followers and supporters of your work who share the same interests and aspirations. This is exactly how I would define my discovery of your work, Mads, and how it’s made a great influence on my perception of photography/filmmaking as both a hobby and career and how to gain the most satisfaction out of making a simple hobby into a lifelong career.

Couldn't agree more with your comments Mads. The beauty and epicness surrounding us is magnified by amazing music. Good to hear you say you shoot for you. I care too often what others think. Hard to move away from it at times to be honest.
It's extremely hard to ignore the noise - having a TH-cam channel I know first hand how negative comments can feel. Alas, you learn to ignore them - took some time, but it's a most precious skill!
For me it's because I want to keep a small piece of the beauty that constantly blows me away. It helps me to experience and find beauty everywhere in all of its forms...even if my photos are an imperfect replication of a small moment in time.
Hi Mads. I just want to say, don't feel like you have to explain yourself. In this social media world we now live in, there will always be those that have to justify their existence by tearing others down. I haven't been following you very long but your work is a cut above most photog's out there. I love the flow and the surrealism that comes from your videos. You also bring areas of the world to many of us who, for whatever reason, will never have a chance to visit. Keep up the good work my friend.

Hi Mads. Thanks for sharing your outlook and philosophy on your photography. For me, photography is an extension of my creativity. I have been into the visual arts all my life since I was about 7 or 8 years old. I am self-taught, and learned how to draw from observation. Over the years I have changed mediums, but in the end it is all about being creative. I have learned how to throw pottery, do pretty amazing pointillism drawings, draw, paint, carve first nations-styled masks by hand with knives etc. What I really enjoy about photography is that is gets me out into nature (and urban environments). I love being outside, and enjoying watching the weather change. The one thing I have really learned from photography is looking for the light, and using solid composition skills, which I have instilled in my work all my life either consciously or subconsciously. I have learned from others as well, like you, and it was always up to me what advice I chose to accept, and what I chose to disregard because it may not have fit into my philosophy at that moment in time. However, even though I may disregard an opinion or advice, I keep it locked away in my head, and more than likely I will adopt those ideas I did not accept later in life. I like that you look at things with a very open mind, and see beauty in what others may see as mundane or not to their liking. Keep up the awesome work, and thanks again for sharing all your knowledge and insights into your world of creativity. Hi, again, from Canada.

It's really sad that people can't see past the "iconic" or unoriginal locations, and just see the beauty in your images. I loved the quote so much. You are correct.. people need to be who they are, and true to themselves. Photography is about seeing the world though someone else's eyes.. no matter how they see it. Keep on being yourself, and creating the beautiful images you do. I have also been accused of being a "stamp collector" but I refuse to let the opinions of others, dictate what I photograph. Cheers!

Yet again another cracking video Mads. For me it’s just a love of being outside and capturing the views that I see and sharing what I see with my children. Watching my eldest grow her love for photography is very special to me and sharing moments with them.

I hope to one day visit Iceland and the Faroes and I'll no doubt visit all the same locations every one else visits. My take on it is that while these places have been photographed a million times, they've never been photographed by ME. Everyone brings there own interpretation of a scene based on their feelings and past experience. Keep doing what you do Mads - you're very inspirational.

Another EPIC video Mads! You bring up a key point about making photographs for yourself, that please you, that reveal how you felt while at the location and express a part of your soul. To anyone: If you're not traveling to these places because its been over photographed. You're not living for yourself. I don't understand how you can let other people dictate where you travel. Especially if you've never been there and seen it for your own eyes. Stop trying to be first and just live. There are thousands of people that are happy traveling to these locations with their iPhones. But because you have a DSLR and can take fantastic images you want to write off these incredible places? I don't get it.

A camera, like any other art tool, will produce what the artist wants to show. No two people will paint the same subject exactly the same way. That is what makes it wonderful. What appears on the canvas comes from within the artist him/herself. You truly show what you feel in your work, not just what you see.
Just keep doing what you’re doing and I’ll keep watching. You do a great job combining music, drone footage and commentary and it is infectious and inspiring. Beautiful images of an awesome landscape. Cheers!

Hi Mads,Love your art and the way you present it.I live in N.Z. which is LOTR country but have a hard time to get away from work to photograph this beautiful country and it's epic landscapes, but when i do i absolutely love it.I find that the travelling to a destination with my dog is calming after a hectic week at work,as long as i have my camera gear and my dog in the car then we're happy.Sometimes my wife will come along and maybe not so happy as she will complain about driving to fast or whatever :) but thats ok i guess.I really love the solitude wherever i go photographing this is why i decided on landscape photography after doing sports, weddings,portraits.I'd rather be alone in the mountains or doing seascapes and even lakes, although the lakes are extremely busy all year round...Keep up the great work and look forward to your next video, cheers.

Unfortunately I dont have the possibilities of traveling and photographing other lands. You videos take me places I cant get to. You show me scenes I good only dream off. Hehe, thanks, Julian I'll continue with that word ;) It's actually a hard process. For a long time I couldn't really find "my style", but I guess it's because it's not visual in the classic sense that all my images are alike.

I, myself, personally Mads will never be concerned about shooting a photo that has been shot hundreds of times or in the most popular places for one reason only...it will be my photo!
It’s capturing a moment that I’ve seen with my own eyes and will always bring back those memories each time I look at it.
I could look at a photo another photographer has taken of the same image and while I would like it and enjoy it, it will never have the same effect on me as the one I have taken myself...even if it technically ‘ might not be as good!haha!

Mads, I think you are the true professional and that shines through in your work. I suppose when you have a talent which stands out in a crowd, there will always be those who wish to pull you down. At the end of the day your images are your images and how you compose, shoot and edit is down to you. I admire the fact that you know what influences your art. I like your sense of purpose and direction and hope you continue to succeed in your path.You asked, What influences my art? I think it is my perception of beauty in nature. I've always wanted to capture it, to hold it and make it mine. It can be epic or intimate. I have also been seduced by Iceland and have been twice. I love seeing the wonder in your eyes when you're there, particularly in this last video. I felt the same wonder! I think this is what we're trying to capture. It's the magic.

Thank you for this video, Mads! What inspires me as a photographer is seeing work such as yours and Nigel's. The experience that is more than a photograph. Photography for me is an escape from every day Life and routine. To go to places where not many go, just to get away from any kind of artificial noise. The experience of sitting on top of a hill or mountain, where the only thing you hear is wildlife and the wind is something that is so lost in today's everyday life. Even for an hour, it makes me feel I am on vacation and truly free. I don't have any bias on true or composite photo art. If it looks good, it looks good! Keep up the great work, we love your videos!

Thank you for posting this! It is so important for artists so remember to do the art they love, not just the art that they feel pressured to do. I think that even when people photograph similar things, the perspective is always unique. In my own art, I'm mostly a costume and fashion designer, but started taking photos as a way to be more self sufficient in my images (one gets sick of seeing their designs on stock photo sites under other photographer's names). This year I'm heading to the Faroe Islands and Copenhagen for the first time, and returning to Iceland, the place that captured my heart last year. I've been so inspired by your videos and it has been so much fun mixing fashion photography and landscape photography. Thank you for sharing your process with us!

Such an amazing video, not only for the photos you show, but for the insight into who you are. I luckily stumbled on your page due to planning a photo trip next year to Iceland. It is nice to find someone who thinks the same way I do with their art. You also bring up a great point about us being a generation raised on “epic” movies. I also think that has a major impact on the landscapes I photo as well as my editing process. It is a shame that people try to put their preconceived notions on how someone edits their art. A lovely video of expresive words and images. Yes the images we capture are our interpretation of what we see & feel in the moment but perhaps we are more alive in that moment to our own greatness and we touch that epic reality in ourselves.
Mads - I have subscribed to your youtube channel and will follow you & Nigel Danson whenever I do create my instagram account. I'm about halfway through viewing your video series on Iceland but, I chose to stop for a moment to pass on my words of encouragement to you remember a phrase that I told myself years ago - "if you don't get talked about, you don't exist". Simply put - ignore all the naysayers of your fine work, for we - your subscribers - believe as you have pointed out numerous times in your videos that your "art" is EPIC. Lastly, thanks for uploading your ICELAND content online. I will spend about 18 days or so in Iceland this fall during my DIY drive around the country as a novice photograph and it's my hope that I may bring home a number of memorable photos from my vacation, less the drone footage - I'll leave drone photography to the experts like you.

First I want to say that the way you talk me along on your travels is just amazing. There is so much love, passion and spirit in your videos. I try not to miss any of them. But I seldom have the chance to whatch because I live constantly in a motorhome and I must save my monthly data.
I am so thankfull for your Iceland videos. You gave me lots of very helpfull info. At the moment I am in corona quarantine at day 2 out of 5 in Iceland. But after then, I have all the time I want to take to see all these epic lications an make my photos. Perhaps I will stay until autumn.

Epic last image
Thank you for this genuine video. I always believed that a true artist does not have right or wrong in their artistry, like many things in life. As an artist, you inspire others and get inspired by your own experience. My main driver in photography is making something new and inspirational for others to see the world from a different prospective. If it happens, and mostly it does, it brings me joy that I made a change on the collective consciousness level. If it does not take place, I would still enjoy creating something which I am proud of and brought joy into my life. I enjoy capturing landscape in infrared and this brings joy to my heart. Some people like the photos others don’t. I still enjoy capturing these photos as if it my first time capturing photos in infrared each single time. Keep doing what you are doing because you are inspiring many people and I glad to say that I am one of them. Wishing you always the very best of luck.

Hi Mads, I relate exactly to what you are talking about ! I first came to your channel to better plan photos on location, but I actually feel the same way you do about photography and life choices. I'm still young, barely getting into photography and travel, but I fully understand when you talk about vastness and these places being close to our hearts. Another inspirational video, Mads. I can completely relate to the desire to immerse oneself in untouched, fantasy-esque landscapes that one simply has to see to beleive. (Talking of Lord-of-the-Rings-inspired photography, I'm really hoping you do a guide series to New Zealand at some point!)
I don't intend on making a living through photography, I primarily use it as an excuse to experience epic locations when the light is at its best, (even if that means getting up at, or staying out during, the unsociable hours). If my photos evoke an emotional response in the viewer that is even remotely close to the emotion I experienced on location, then my job is certainly done. Since there is simply no photo that could ever substitute experiencing these locations first-hand, the most I could hope for is that my photos inspire others to make the trip themselves.
If that means photographing locations that are already well-known within photography circles, then so be it! Especially if I don't have the photo in my own portfolio already. I could spend a lifetime travelling this planet and only tick off a relative handful of the 'clichéd' photography locations on offer once, yet alone return to each location 20 times in an attempt to capture each unique composition in the best conditions. I also don't want to pressure myself for an original subject so much, that I miss my one opportunity to experience a well-known epic location.

Hi Mads. Exactly what you described was what I experienced on my recent trip to Iceland. The vast landscape, the isolation, time to contemplate and the room to create was what I took home from my 9 day solo-trip. True about the drone perspective. Its a completely different angle to get the shot from. On several locations I wasnt happy with the composition but from a birds eye - totally awesome. Especially the rivers from the glaciers through the landscape. Funny enough I didnt even know it was called Endalausidalur, but when I came out of the tunnel and down the hill and saw the "pyramids" I had to throw the car into the small gravel road and photograph them. Truely stunning and probably not well known. Keep it up Mads - great videos and photos.
Your style of photography is really what I enjoy the most; In my opinion, you consistently deliver compelling photos, that pretty much have all the elements I look for in photography.
Being a huge fan of Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, World of Warcraft, Diablo, etc. I just love everything that is epic, moody, dark and dramatic. In my photography, I try to capture scenes that remind me of those, but it's often pretty hard to get the perfect conditions for it to happen. In the past year I think I've been improving a lot, watching your videos helps me immensely and inspires me so much to keep improving. Always looking forward to your next photos and videos, Mads!
Btw, really love that second shot there, I think I have a soft spot for central compositions haha!

Another wow video !!! My drive is to capture the beauty of nature and landscapes during escaping the rush of my daily work, it gives me peace and wonder. Being outdoors and capturing epic landscapes is my goal, sharing on social media is a bonus. Likes are super motivating but i learned that i must take pictures for myself. Very good episode Mads, it tackles a question I hear and see asked without asking on many social media channels and groups.. My view on it goes something like this. If an artist painted a picture and posted it online would people criticise it openly and attempt to attach their views to it so freely ? The fact that we take photos and create a snapshot of the moment via a camera should not be any different . It is our vision that forms the very framework of the photo just like it is the same framework of the artist and their painting. If someone posts a photo or a painting and asks for feedback then make sure it is constructive and has a foundation rather than a view. If someone posts a photo and doesn't ask for feedback then either like it & comment on it or not like it and move on. The person who posted liked it so much tho post it so thats all that should matter in the end.

Great video Mads. I capture images of landscapes for "ME" and if others happen to like them then it's all good and well but, if not, who cares. In this day and age with the availability of camera phones and cheap digital cameras, there is a glut of landscape images out there from all around the world and it is therefore very difficult to capture an image of popular epic locations without the images being similar. Similar they may be but, they will never ever be the same! Love your work mate, keep them coming!

Visuals tell a story and I have recently bought a camera! I see things that just make me want to take a photo! I used to draw and paint at The Art Students League in NYC and have since developed an eye for beauty and enjoy composition using light to create images! You’re Iceland pics are very inspirational! I hope to go there this year or next!
Really liked the vertical image with the stream leading in. As for me, my things are woodlands and water. I never tire of exploring new forests, streams, waterfalls.

Great video Mads, as always :) Here's my take, when I take a shot, I shoot as you say "with intent" my images need to have a surreal edge to them when I edit, I want them to look like they are another world, a world through my eyes.....
Wonderful video, not only the truly epic landscapes, but also the story you told about you and your art. I always try to recreate the image I saw in my “mind’s eye”. I’ve become immune to the remark “but that’s edited in photoshop” if Rembrandt was a photographer he would have edited his photos.

As to your question, I too love the epic shots, but I also like working with the small and intimate. I am motivated by simply sharing what I find to be beautiful, epic, hideous, painful, joyous, silent, noisy, what have you. Today I am shooting photos of my nephew as he embarks on a music career. In a few days I will be out at sunrise for landscapes. It is whatever I feel at the moment. :)

i got into taking photos by accident really, im a cyclist and a runner but im getting on a bit so i thought about hiking as i love the outdoors, so headed to youtube to watch videos about where to go and came across yourself and thomas and got inspired, i picked up my sons old canon and off i went taking images on my walks, not the best images but i enjoy it, i post on insta (craigwilso) and i will never be a vlogger but to see the wonderful places you go is inspiration enough for me, keep it up mads 👍

One cannot please all of course, and given how easy it is to fire critics all around you probably stand in a tough place when receiving feedback. I hope you carry on as your VLOG are fantastic and your channel interesting for whoever likes to travel: I shared it with friends who are not into photo and they enjoyed watching too. I enjoyed hearing more about what inspires and motivates you as an artist, and I love that you make no apologies for how you interpret your images, edit them, and apply your imagination to the original scene. I too do not adhere to a "purist" mentality when making my pictures, and I see the original capture as just a starting point. Some images get a lot more processing and manipulation, while others are already close to the vision I have in mind. I must admit, developing your vision and being able to imagine what an image could be before you even take it is one of the hardest things to do. It's definitely more fun and rewarding to pre-visualize a finished image, if you can manage to do it.
While I love the Lord of the Rings and the other cultural inspirations you referenced, and I'm amazed by these epic places, my own photographic inspiration is a little different. It's maybe not as well-defined and clear as yours is, but that's probably because I'm newer to photography. I find I am more attracted to intimate smaller landscapes, or small vignettes in a large landscape, that give me a feeling and spark my imagination. I like to reflect on the present moment when I'm in a landscape in the context of what has come before and what may come in the future. This works particularly well if I'm by myself, which is my preference, because I'm not distracted and am able to relax and be present in the moment. For me photography at its best is a kind of therapy, a meditation, an exercise in mindfulness and really seeing. It's the experience itself of being out in nature that inspires me.
Sorry to hear about your missing images! I guess if you shoot enough, it's bound to happen eventually. I'm lucky that I've not made that mistake yet, but I'm sure I will.

For me the art is a way to bring magic into our mundane world. To combine fantasy with the real world and create scenes out of dreams. Using lightpainting techniques to do this. Also heavily influenced by fantasy culture but also sci-fi and 80s movies are a huge inspiration.
On a sidenote wouldn't that waterfall on the left be a good foreground to photograph the left mountain, or was it too close?

Ugh I YEARN to be back there. I believe the Door Mountains and the Endless Valley were actually noted as places from which Tolkien gained a lot of inspiration for the LOTR universe, so it's no wonder you have such a fascination with these places; so did he!
