    Good info, thanks! I was skeptical about the Series 80 at first after listening to all the internet BS, but now I think I'd rather have a Series 80 after listening to you!

      I've had a Sig Fastback Nightmare for about five years. The trigger is phenomenally crisp, and feels like two and a half pounds, even though it's four pounds.
      I just found out it's a Series 80. (Never bothered to investigate, and I still don't care.)
      So I'm with you all the way. If my Sig is a Series 80, then Series 80 is just fine.
      By the way, I've owned a Colt National Match. Nice gun, but the quality and trigger were no better than my Sig.

    I am relatively new to the pistol community. Been shooting about 5 years and as many times as I have had someone explain the difference between series 70 & 80. You did so in about 8 1/2 min. Thank you! My first Colt is was a Colt Gold Cup Trophy Match .45 and the following year I bought a Colt Government Model.45 which is now my EDC. I love both of them! Again, thanks for the explanation. Great job!

    rangehot, The best explanation thus far on YT between the series 70 vs the series 80 Colt 1911. You explained the difference in both pistols in down to earth, laymen terms. You certainly got my vote of approval. I just subscribed.

      Yes, but without you watching and commenting it would be just me talking to myself so I see it as a symbiotic relationship. I shot this before I had a decent camera, bad audio equipment, and no editing skills. I feel like my newer videos are somewhat better but I still have a lot to learn about shooting and cutting video.

    Just found this video. I agree that it is clearly the best video out there explaining the differences between the Series 70 and Series 80 Colts. This cleared up a couple things for me. I've got a 1986 stainless Gold Cup Series 80, and another Colt 1911 marked Series 80. The Gold Cup came with the collet barrel bushing which I have replaced with a standard bushing. It functions exactly like you described and demonstrated.
    The hammer on the 1911 has been replaced by a previous owner. The replacement hammer has the half-cock hammer hooks you talked about, so it's operating like a Series 70.
    Many thanks for the excellent clarification.

    My ATI government model does not have a firing pin safety yet has a solid barrel bushing. I really like it, it was very cheap 320$, it is well made and works perfectly, It is a plain jane GI model, but that is what I wanted...

  • @123ixora
    @123ixora 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've had both and you are spot on, both had great triggers. The one with collet bushing never broke in over 10,000 rounds but was changed in a rebuild after that along with most internals! Only malfunction ever was from the detention tube coming off a nickeled Colt with rubber grips that didn't cover it, and two cheap mag springs going flat after being left loaded for over a year! That's 3 fails in 15 years and who knows how many round of reloads, hot hollow points, Keith type lead type and you name it! I know I'm fortunate but my 2 Colts and 2 Springfield's both ran everything I put in them, I've only had to tuned the extractors on them and do light polish of feed ramps and one firing pin hole that had a issue!

    Good info brother I stumbled on this vid cause I was having a mini meltdown, That delta elite I had posted on your fb page I bought a while back I was going over it tonight giving it a lil inspection because I think I'll have to replace the springs. Well in the process of looking at it, dry firing it etc etc I realized that it barely has a "half cock" position and as you described the hammer will fall from the half cock if the trigger is pulled. I was flipping out lol and I'm by no means a nooB with guns but you can learn something new every day!

    Thank you for this fantastic clarification. So what would you call a pre-70 series pistol, like a mil-spec 1911 or 1911A1? Does it have a series #? Or do we just refer to it as a pre-series 70?

    • @rangehot
      @rangehot  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      1911 if it was made before 1924 and 1911A1 after that. Pre Series 80 designates a Commander without a firing pin safety. There is no such thing as a Series 70 Commander, FYI.

I'm talking about the matte finish solid triggers, not the three hole design. Thanks for the helpful information you put out, it's very much appreciated sir. 👍🏻🇺🇲

      Absoulouty nothing wrong with the Colt 1911 and there are no problems with the Series 80 FPS. If you are looking for something a bit more custom take a look at Dan Wesson.

    Im looking at colt Gold Cup National Match (45ACP) in 2020 on their web site and it has series 70 manual next to it. Im confused why are they selling new series 70s when series 80s is update and maybe safer? Still confused. Sorry.

    • @rangehot

      Bob, many folks do not like the Series 80 parts and some believe leaving out the firing pin safety makes for a better trigger pull.

      Well was looking to buy a 1911 either a colt or a Springfield Armory. I like the new new colt royal blued the best. best bang for bunk I like the SA stainless mil spec. So many options and they don't always tell you if its 70 or 80s parts. So don't know enough to know what to buy yet.

    • @rangehot
      @rangehot  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Colt will be pretty clear if the pistol has the firing pin safety. I don't know if I would say the Series 80 is safer but it is an extra safety. Between Springfield and Colt I would for sure buy the Colt. A much better bult pistol with better quality small parts.

    What is your opinion on using a frame slot filler on a series 80.

    • @rangehot
      @rangehot  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Tom Gandy John Travis has installed several on his Series 80 pistols but they are soft steel and must be changed ever few thousand rounds. As long as you keep an eye on them they work just fine as a filler to do away with the lawyer parts. I am not sure I would do it on a carry gun just in case God forbid you had to use it and it was brought up the owner removed a factory safety. I know that sounds stupid as hell but you know how slick lawyers are.
