  • In this week's video, we take a look at the stopping power of the .357 Magnum. We are firing into synthetic ballistics gel at approximate FBI Standards with 125gr LFP with reduced recoil and 125gr JHP. We also look at the difference in controlled firing speed in a mag dump.
Thanks for watching. New videos post every Thursday!

I shoot my S&W Model 19 Combat Magnum (357) 4" barrel from time to time just for fun. It was the first gun I bought and still enjoy. Always love to watch revolver videos. And I agree from experience, get professional training. I didn't know what I didn't know until I did. Now I take a class at least once a year, and budget for it accordingly.

Of all the handguns I've owned over the last 4+ decades I most regret trading off/selling three .357 Magnum revolvers. #1) A 6" S&W Model 28, #2) A 4" Ruger Security Six, #3) A 4" nickel plated Colt's Trooper III. The Colt was stupid accurate from the holster and had the best double and single action trigger pulls I've experienced to this day! The ONLY semi auto pistol I really regret selling/trading off was a 1911A1 in .45ACP of WWII vintage. P.S.: I spent most of my adult working years as an LEO and the .357 Magnum revolver stoked with 125gr JHP were the choice of Law Enforcement until the FBI decided THEY needed more bullets than training.

The stopping power of the 357 Magnum was proven once and for all back in 1935 when it first came out. Actually it was a little before that when men like Elmer Keith, Phil Sharpe, and Doug Wesson developed hot loaded 38 special cartridges. I used an S&W Model 19 Combat Magnum in Alaska as my bear gun.

I learned handgun shooting on a S&W 617, K frame, 10 x 22 lr. I learned DA trigger pull smooth and fast on it. This gun is built for hot 357 mag loads, I will keep it for ever. The trigger has become that smooth over the years, it can't serve as a training tool no more, that light and smooth.
Do not dry fire a rim caradrige, but you don't have to it is that cheap. It eats every thing.
As my carry I had a cheap S&W 686, 4'' 6x357 mag from Sarsilmaz with a factory rubber grip. I made an appendix holster for the gun and my body.
Then I went with the flow. I carried semi auto DA/SA. And went into the 9 mm spray.
I realized on long range nothing beats the precision of a fixed barrel with a SA hear trigger on a revolver.
The impact on targets with the hot revolver loads I use are not comparable with 9 mm. I explained to me, well you have 15+1 and 21+21 mags on you. But maybe you'll need your knife at the end to end the fight. But maybe you have to use them all to stop an attacker who might be built like a grizly.
That gun was a hammerfired semi auto and half a revolver. I felt safe to carry it. CZ P 07.
Then I went with the flow and got me a CZ 10 S.
I was blown away what I can do with it on the range.
But I am not confortable carrying a striker fired.
In my country I am married to a gun with a carry permite for 3 years.
End of the story I carry it with an empty chamber.
I carry a non licened micro 9 mm with a DA only pocket as well chambered
Every range day I bring my revolvers as well. People are impresed what I do with them, not of the spray we all do thies days. It is the loud rapid hard impact on steal that is different.
    I made up my mind.
I don't want to hurt feelings, but thies nice modern triggers make up for people who can't shoot that well. An average shoot can look good with it.
Real fights never look good. It's messy. I am more in open hands, and I look on terminal ballistics in a gun in the same way I look at my punches. I don't throw bunny punches, why should I shoot bunny rounds?
What I will do is take the flow on to my revolvers and will give them red dots to operate at night carring and with night visión in my truck and in my house. In 2 years they will get the carry permit.
    Good shooting Mr. !

For deer size game I dont hesitate with my 6.75 inch barrel revolver with 158 grain sjhp hand load. I would only use this on a bear as a last resort. Now out of my lever action with a hard cast 180 grain hand load I would take the shot. For deer I like a 180 grain sjhp hand load. These are what work for me. But honestly for bear I would prefer to use at least a 30/30 or 35 rem, but preferably a 30/06. I hope this helps.

It’s good to see another southpaw shooting but have to say, as an experienced revolver shooter, I’ve never seen anyone grip a revolver like that. We were taught to have a high grip on the backstrap and that’s what got me through three on duty shootings during my 30 yr. career.

      @Lee-rq1ek ปีที่แล้ว +1

In 1977 when I started as an LEO (retired 2009) we were taught to grip revolvers like that. The weak hand thumb came across the back of the strong hand so the weak hand thumb could cock the revolver if needed without releasing the grip. I still use that grip when I re-qualify yearly for my PD licenses.
In regard to the strong hand being low on the grip, yes, he should have a higher grip in my opinion.

The greatest advantage to a 357 Magnum is the ability to concealed carry that kind of power in a small little package. Granted, you can always carry a 10 mm compact, but being accurate with that versus attribute 7 Magnum 3 inch barrel, doesn't even compare, and your capacity is going to be the same, six or seven shots. Now if you're open carry in The Great outdoors, 10 mm, 6 in barrel double stack 15 round magazine is where it's at. Hot 10mm loads are identical to hot 357 Magnum loads.

Thanks for your stopping power series. I enjoy watching each episode.
I think the important part to remember when shooting revolver cartridges is that not the cartridge makes the difference in the first place but the proficiency and knowledge of the revolver.
I got myself a Taurus 66, recently. Love that gun but even after 150 RDS the trigger still needs break in RDS and I need more practice . If I use 38 sp or 357 mag doesn't really matter at this point. It is all about preparing the gun and the shooter to become a unit.
As for your closing remarks, spot on. If I do not feel like I can shoot a gun reliably A zone from 10 yds, it doesn't get into my carry rotation. I practice until I know what I am doing .
Nothing worse than hurting an innocent bystander in a self defense situation.

Two different guns same ammo. Sidearm and Rifle. Great idea.
Revolver, SS, 4in.5 shot. Rifle, single shot break action, 22in. barrel w/ 3x9x40 on top.
    Versatility of the 357.
I can use ALL the 38sp ammo. 357 magnum ammo is widely available.
    I handload.
Purchase a box of 50 and with reasonable power loading these cases can be reloaded about 5 times. The Hornady Loading Manual lists both rifle and pistol sections.
For PSD, 110-125 grain bullets. The 38sp Full Wadcutter 148gn where secondary hits are a concern.
With the Heavy ones, 130-140-150-158-160 grain bullets, HUNTING. Deer and feral hogs. So far 2 deer taken and one feral boar hog.
    All O.S.O.K.
357 factory over the counter ammo is about a Dollar a shot. My hand loads, depending on the bullet, my cost per round, 23-42 cents a loaded round.
Rifle, 50 yards, bench, 3 shots, All holes touching. Accuracy is the goal here. I start with a Hot loading, from the manual, then back that load off till I get the accuracy that I want. 158 FMJTC started with 18gn of Little Gun. Best accuracy, 13gn. My cost for 50 rounds of this loading, about $10.
Frugal, another plus for the 357 chambering.
A single shot rifle helps with making sure that one shot counts.

I've been teaching shootings since 1970 and I carried a revolver until 2005 even after I had trained a number of police, mainly Michigan State Police how to transition into semi-autos. You're going to have to explain to me exactly how that is a slow grip that you have on that revolver is a proper grip?
I have noticed that there are some rounds that do not function well in 357 just like there are rounds that don't function well at 9 mm, mostly any of them that are fired out of 3-inch barrels.
The 357 Magnum is still the best first shot fight stopper that there is. It does require usually a 125 grain hollow point traveling at around 1400 plus feet per second. I was easily able to accomplish this with my forage Ruger that I carried at the time with a stout load of h110.
I usually fired either the federal hollow point or the Sierra hollow point, which 102 functioned quite superbly.
I would always carry at least three speed loaders along with a number of other rounds usually in a western Quick Draw rig it turned out being quite a good tactical set up. I can carry the three speed loaders in Clips on the front of the belt and still had 25 rounds on the back of the belt. In the speed loaders I would carry the early Silvertip 145 grain load. The reason would be that the first six rounds are normally for between me and another individual, and the 145 grain loads were for a little bit more tactical penetration in a longer, involved gunfight.
When I did replace it with a standard carry-on, I went to a CZ variant in 40 Smith because it could provide much of the same high amount of permanent wound cavity that a 9 mm has yet to accomplished without being extremely hot in the range of about 1350 or so feet per second with 124 grain hollow point. The only caveat to that is the 115 grain federal law enforcement load did acquit itself quite well. But it's also did not have tactical penetration capability.
I always practice at 50 and even 100 yards with my 357 at least a couple of times a year. I was able to shoot 4 inch groups at 100 yds in double action. I had several years before I retired that gun Mama never firing it single action. I find it disturbing that you find the name to cock the hammer before you fire the gun. You should be able to fire a 357 in double action very accurately.
I do have a couple of 1911 that I'll use. I have maintained ownership of a singular 9 mm that my father had purchased, it was a P35 Browning from the Argentine military and it is the most accurate 9 mm I have ever witnessed in my life. That said I carry it with at least a 15 round primary Magazine with a 15 and a 20 round backup. Why all the ammo. Because you're going to freaking need it. Even with the 4.7 inch barrel, the 9mm is barely better than adequate. I have thought about ordering a barrel for my 40 Smith for in 357 sig. I will give up two rounds of ammo for a rock-solid 1450 ft per second 125 grain all day long or a 40 smith. They are both considerably Superior to any 9mm Parabellum load.
One other point I'd like to make, the day that I ask an FBI agent what gun to shoot, I've lost too many brain cells. The FBI are piss poor at deciding ammo and they're also piss poor at shooting their firearms. For a couple of decades now police officers have gone to the glock. I think that carrying a firearm without a safety on it is a hindrance, that will eventually bite them in the ass in court

Ammo Inc 357 Magnum is very watered down which is okay since they use a Hornady XTP and Hornady American Gunner is loaded similarly but still produces good results. Although I would like to point out the Hornady Custom line seems to be loaded more consistently and to a higher velocity. Also Buffalo Bores loading with the 125gr XTP is getting over 1400 fps out of a 2" snub and 1600fps out of a 6" GP100. I should note this ammo isn't very pleasant to shoot.

I own 2 models.. .the 686+ 2.5 inch model and the 4 inch model....as much as u love them they r too much power....using any of those (especially the snubbie) indoors would be detrimental to ur hearing. That concussion is no joke. I keep them loaded with 38 special +P.. 357's for hikes and camping trips.

Too much power?... Probably - but they'll definitely stop a threat. I'm a newbie revolver guy, and it's just what I carry (.357 Mag; the Corvette of handgun calibers)... But I am noticing that most people seem to prefer the less powerful (but more modern) semi-auto cartridges. 10mm is close to .357 Magnum - but many people even consider that to be too powerful for human defense. I don't see myself downgrading to .38 Special +P though, because that's not optimizing what a .357 Mag revolver is capable of, lol.

@@carlosmorris4510 to each their own......even a 38 special without the plus P will easily kill a human being.......so why make it harder on urself? A 357 magnum is overkill and good luck if it goes thru walls and u kill an innocent human being...u will go to prison 100%.

Closing statement has more info than most of the video. Seemed rushed and lacks a good comparison of barrels and ammo types. Best demonstration was the recoil impulse. I got nothing from the gel tests that hasn't been shown better in dozens of other videos.

I dont think any one will like hearing the sound of a gun going off much less getting shot by a lower grain round of the 357.

Not a good choice in ammo OR the 6.5" barrel. Typical good defense ammo from Hornady, Federal HST, Speer Gold Dot in 125's. Also should have included one 158 grain from one of those manufacturers. CCW really means 2.5" barrel or less....you missed it in that category as well. Otherwise nice video thank you.

As I stated, we will return to the .357 magnum caliber with a snub nose later on. The videos get to long to cover all that in a single pass. Thanks for watching and stay tuned for that video in the future.

    Great video!
FYI 9mm out of a 16” carbine provides 357 magnum power using the tiny 9mm parrabellum/NATO (lots of quality modern defensive ammunition to choose from)
with an extended sight radius and 3 points of contact, low muzzle rise and much less recoil than a 357 magnum pistol or rifle making it a great self defense tool for the home and with its 100-200yard range very good for small game, the ranch, homestead or even a truck gun! .357 with a 125gr projectile is known to be a great man stopper/hunting round and is a great concealed weapon if you are familiar with revolvers and don’t mind limited capacity AND strong recoil but never rule out 9mm for carry(less recoil, muzzle rise, more capacity) and a 9mm carbine to bring that magnum power out for home defense or hunting using the same 9mm loads! Modern 9mm is very controllable and even more powerful, has made many advancements and has been adopted by most government agencies for a reason and has been shown to penetrate more so than .40SW!
.355 caliber projectiles such as 9mm/357magnum are effective and at the end of the day are on the smaller end of the spectrum but still big bore cartridges 35caliber a lot of people don’t take that into equation or see it this way but it’s true! At the beginning and the end of the day freedom is what I stand for and it gives us the right to have these conversations and the right to choose how to defend/protect yourself so pick your poison! 357magnum & 9mm are both great .35 caliber cartridges with the first being much more powerful out of a pistol with much more recoil and limited capacity but at the end of the day shot placement and safety are first and either round will get the job done!
Practice, practice, practice! Train, Train, Train than repeat 💪
    Great video GODBLESS AMERICA!

Now imagine what a .357 Magnum does out of a 16in carbine, 9mm don't come close

    • @dsrrecordsent
      @dsrrecordsent ปีที่แล้ว

@@bidenstoletheelection9116 9mm out of a carbine does not come close to .357 magnum but picks up a lot of power and tactical advantage over a pistol and has a completely different use than a .357 carbine(rapid shot placement, low recoil, little muzzle rise, very controllable, sound mitigation, a plethora of modern defensive ammo to choose from and most of the times triple the capacity of a .357 magnum in carbine format/sometimes 10x) . 357 Magnum out of a rifle length carbine is another animal for another application and produce’s rifle like power using a magnum pistol cartridge! With .35 caliber 125gr projectiles flying 2000fps and having over 1000ft/lbs of energy that’s nothing to sneeze at, it doesn’t match the power of our NATO spec .556 but is a tried and true hunting round with its power falling under the likes of the iconic 30-30 which has taken large to medium game from 100 yards and in ALL OVER THIS COUNTRY! So it is a solid hunting round out of a carbine producing plenty of power for medium sized game using your standard .357 magnum pistol ammunition in a carbine and sometimes even taking the capacity from 5-6 shots to 10 making .357magnum carbines great tools for hunting, woodland defense or a ranch rifle! PCC are not a new idea and definitely fill their intended roles VERY well those with experience as yourself KNOW! It is great to be able to share ammunition with your side arm and your carbine! The power and freedom to choose which tool we use for what application we choose is what I stand for and what we need to protect for generations to come! DIVIDED WE FALL UNITED WE STAND! There is a general problem with almost all ammo reviews online. This is basically that conclusion are derived from the test taken. But the tests can vary hugely based on the power or the ammo used. I again offer you my ballistics file to really see how various calibers can vary greatly in power. Click on my name here, then on 'About', and email me.
Here are but a few ballistics facts: the .357 Mag varies in power for about 250 ft. lbs. of ME, all the way up to 906 (PPU). The 10mm (one of the most powerful pistols outside of the Desert Eagles) max's out at 700 ft. lbs. The 9mm max's out (only with the ultra powerful round from Buffalo Bore) at 500 ft. lbs. The 40mm max's out at 582 (also buffalo Bore).
