Murray-Darling water buyback controversy explained | 7.30

  • Australians have been horrified by the impact of the drought on the Murray-Darling Basin, our biggest river system, with millions of fish suffocating in stagnant pools while whole towns go without water.
    For years now, the government has been spending hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to buy back irrigation licences, so that more water can be put back into the river.
    But one purchase is coming under close scrutiny. Then-water minister Barnaby Joyce signed-off on the purchase of water entitlements, at a very high price, to a company based in a tax haven. That company was also co-founded in 2007 by now-Energy Minister Angus Taylor, who stepped down as director and severed all ties before entering Parliament in 2013.

    A "water market" should have never been a thing in the first place. This is what happens when you let the "small government" lot privatise everything.

      ‘Small government’ = big business stooges, especially considering water is a textbook natural monopoly and should never have had any sales or prices involved whatsoever

    • @smeglips
      @smeglips 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lana Gaskell - cotton growers are using overland water rights to grow the cotton. This means they use flood water in times of flood to grow cotton not water from the main stream. It doesn’t really matter what you grow, flood irrigated crops all use similar amounts of water. Fact is, the government is happy to waste the water to back their claims we are running out of water so they can charge everyone more for it. Not sure where u live Lana, but the real story is not what is being reported on and the general public in the cities have no idea what’s going on, just the way the government likes to keep their majority vote!
      That said, this was obviously a shit deal for the tax payer. Pollies are not business people, that’s why the US is doing so well under Trump, he’s are deal winner!

    • @celticgypsy6067
      @celticgypsy6067 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The river system itself should of had several weirs put in so flood waters could be held along the river system also. That should have been done 50 years ago.

But when going back visiting I could see the decline and the pressures not only from less rain but Fracking and Mines as well as big Agriculture. Years ago in the 1960s most farms were just small family properties. I can even remember Koalas I’m tall Gum trees along the banks. Now there’s none.

    4:37 This part is interesting. It seems (in my uneducated opinion) that 'The Department' is saying, "Oh yeah, but the unused flood water will help the river systems." I would want to see proof that the property was being reprofiled to allow overland flow to reach the river systems. Remember Cubby Station? It was holding back more overland flow water than there was in Sydney Harbour.
