I recently attended a masterclass with Kenny Rampton when he was in Sydney Australia regarding the use of the Hirschman plunger mute. During question time, one person asked how he produced the airy sound. Kenny said that he really didn’t know, apart from listening and learning to do it, which is what you’re doing. Kenny said if he really thought about it, he could write a book about it, but a person reading the book probably wouldn’t be able the just produce the sound from reading a book, you just have to do it yourself. A lot of people over analyse things and write a book and then you get analysis paralysis and get nowhere. I’m a trying to come back player in my 60’s and I’m just trying to focus on sound and let everything else make it happen, it’s slow but I’m improving.

I heard Chet Baker played a Bach 6A and I could not find one but got a 5A and yep, got "that" sound. Trumpets are amazing, between mouthpieces and mutes, the sound can be changed so much.

@@GarotMichaelConklin Would a 9A be teeny tiny like a French horn mouthpiece?

I think I’ve heard a Chet baker track that sounds as airy as a Westinghouse fan. And I know he didn’t have any exotic mouthpieces from Denmark!

My understanding of that sound that he had, at least toward the end of his caerre/life, was that he had been blasted in the mouth and lost a bunch of teeth and then had dentures so his playing was significantly changed due to that?
