Bottom line, you know your cost/mile and can make an educated decision. Makes sense. Thanks for sharing and enjoy the holidays with your family.

When working with lanes averages are so important! You hit it on the dot with that. If you get good money coming into a bad area you know you will have to settle for a $1 mile load out. People say wait until a good load comes but that doesn’t always happen you can take $1 per mile today and get back to a good area or take $1 per mile tomorrow. Fixed cost still takes place so it’s better to dead head or take the load and get back. IMO

That's what I'm saying. A guy could sit in a bad market for a week, waiting for something good. It's much better to grab a load to get into a good market. It's good to see you on here!

Good info, I will deadhead if under pressure with time but will pull “ Cheap Freight” to get myself to a load. I run a lane from Albany NY down to PA. Sometimes it just dries up and I venture out to the Midwest to let things settle down again. In Tunkhannock PA tonight waiting for a load back up to Johnstown NY . 10,000 pounds so should do ok with mpg’s. I deadheaded here from the house as the only load coming down this way is from an outfit that forgets they have to load trailers. Running a lane you can get a lot of local knowledge and then make informed decisions.

Thanks! I appreciate it. Some brokers run the same loads over and over. It sure makes a big difference knowing what you are getting yourself into. I don't mind going to a shipper and waiting all day as long as I'm paid for my time. Good to see you on here!

The problem with Laredo is it takes an ungodly amount of time to get in and out of there. They are so painfully slow. I always remind myself going into Laredo. It’s gonna take at least half a day to get unloaded and reloaded

I totally agree. It can be rough getting out of there. I've been down there so many times that I've got a few places where I can be in and out. Just like last week, I was loaded in 30 minutes and gone.

@ yeah there are very few places like that. The place I loaded out of took took them five hours to load me. During that time they probably loaded about seven other trucks going into Mexico and they told me they had to load those trucks because the bridge closes at 8 PM. So they made me wait because they were behind on Mexico trucks essentially. I was not happy I was, however, grateful they were honest about the situation.

The biggest problem to me is how everyone parks on the side of the street and you fight your way into the place. I've been really lucky the last few times I've been there.

@ OMG I FREAKING HATE THAT!!! But unfortunately, it’s because the forwarding companies have no space inside their yards. But yes, that drives me absolutely insane. It’s like a park a block away walk all the way over here so we can tell you to wait for three hours in your truck and then when you get a dock, we’re gonna make you wait another two hours

When you say cost per mile, I assume you are talking about the truck and truck maintenance + repairs. What value do you put on Johnny? $250.00 for an 10-1/2 hour driving day. $350.00?? $500.00 When Calculating costs, there is repair bills, parts bills tubes of grease, oil filters. Receipts can give you those exact numbers. Paying a shop to do those tasks @ $150-$200 per hour is expensive. You do all that stuff yourself when you can. Do you put in a labor number or fix your truck for free in spare time? Same with deadheads, If Waco to Laredo is 330 miles, that is 5-1/2 hours at 60 miles per hour. Thanks for the content!

When i say cost per mile, that is everything that goes with running this truck and trailer. Cell phone, boots, grease, parts, tires. Any and everything i can think of. My labor doesn't go into that. I know what you are saying about my time being valuable. I'm just glad to have that ability to do my repairs, I feel like it is a huge advantage not just in money savings but also in downtime. Thanks for taking the time to watch the videos and comment!
