Gon and Killua have the best bestfriend relationship out of all the anime i've seen, because it was well develop, and not forced like Naruto and Sasuke's realationship, the closes thing to this would be Bojji and Kage.
The real difference between Naruto-Sasuke (and other similar shonen relationship) and Gon-Killua or Bojji-Kage is that their are protrayed as kids, with a degree of realism, in some sense. Like the authors knew real life kids (probably parents on their own at that point, or had babysitted kids before, or at the very least read children psychology books).
So its a combination of characterization in regards of their psychology as kids (Killua and Gon play a lot, and are bratty some times, and they became friends REALLY fast similar as we all did as kids because we didn't have many or none prejudices, they also can be jealous and inmature) and as you said the superb character development of Togashi.
Nothing forced because the author probably is very conciousness of the narrative flow of the story and his characters. Wish all writers/mangaka were like that. But you gotta understand most start this career as 18-20 years old Japanese sheltered men, without much life experience (can we count the bubble that is the college experience as life experience? I do not) and also very unacquaintanced with female and children perspectives.
Togashi and Ousama's Ranking authors are very rare in the shonen genre. I do not count the mangaka of FMA because its a woman and they have a less sheltered background generally speaking.

Guys, would you say that a lion is evil because of its carnivorous nature? Many people when watching hunter x hunter forget that the king acts simply by instinct, he is not really born evil despite the fact that he has a series of genetic aspects that he inherits from all the humans eaten by the queen but these will develop later.
some animals do act evil for no reason. pick up a book
I have a different interpretation of what the king means in relation to morality.
I think that the show believes that cruelty is inherently evil. Not violence for a cause, even a basic cause like hunger or greed. Those can be justifiable given your perspective. But needless violence for vindictive pleasure and ego are considered evil in the eyes of the show.
The king is born as the embodiment of entitlement and pride, like a toddler, like a supreme ruler, and like Gon. But as he grows and becomes less an “ideal king” and more of a caring individual, that vindictive, prideful side gives way to empathy, which in the eyes of the show is the ultimate good that one can achieve. Empathetic understanding is the paramount virtue of Hunter x Hunter and you can embody that even if you don’t act upon it.
In this series, an empathetic killer who kills in pursuit of their dream is considered more virtuous than a coward who ruins peoples lives out of vindictive pleasure but does not harm people out of fear.
With this interpretation, to your point, I think that in the way the show presents morality, the king is presented as being born evil, but grows and become a realized person by the end.
I would say you can't really compare the ants to normal animals because they have human like intelligence and are rational beings however they do have a much stronger instinct than humans do.
However, they can use their rational thinking to overpower their instinct which is something most normal animals can't do.

Sir, your argument only makes sense with animals and beings that don't have self awareness. Chimera ants are as intelligent as humans and can even be considered just a different category of human.

@@TheCouto11 At this point in the manga, not yet. Meruem was something crazy on its own. Really fucking OP. Basically god-like.
CA arc introduced those creatures that really diverged really far from the power balance spectrum established so far. It was the point thematically speaking. So we can get our characters in extreme situations never encoutnered before and also the world so far can react to the menace of the CA. At the end it all wraps up together really tight.
The Dark Continent which is on the far horizon because Togashi isn't well in terms of health is probably never writing or publishing that far if he kepts with this turtle pacing of production. But if we are lucky reach that far well yes, theres probably very far superior creatures in the DC compared to Meruem, after all it's suspected the Queen came from the DC, escaping the dangers nonetheless.

I always took it as the King being the reincarnation of the leader of NGL Gyro, as it was made apparent that it's how it works with some individuals keeping their personality, so his tail having the needle point is a nod to his drug empire within the NGL and it fits further down the line with his desire for human subjugation and his eventual fall when he feels love for the first time.
Gyro did become an ant but he's not the king, he left the colony

Well in the manga, Gyro is eaten by the queen and is reborn as a one of the ants while still knowing who he is so he leaves and is seen later nearly meeting Gon
The anime already said that gyro is a ant and he left remember his memories
