  • Description:
We are at the Faneromeni Monastery in Salamina, the largest Greek island in the Saronic Gulf.
The monastery was founded in 1682 by Lambros Kannelos, who was later sanctified by the Orthodox Church and renamed Saint Laurentios. From 1944, the Monastery was transformed from a male monastery to a female one, an identity that keeps to this day. The church’s decoration was undertaken by Georgios Markou, who painted hagiographies (frescos) of post-Byzantine style.
At the beginning of the film, we see the filmmaker’s family as they read the announcement that is posted at the monastery’s entrance. Then, we watch the monastery’s interior, the church’s main entrance and its visitors.
A flowering bougainvillea stands majestically in front of the all-white wall and the bell tower of the church. The camera guides us to the facades of the cells, takes us to the church’s interior and then to its precinct. Lastly, we see the family heading towards the exit.
