That BYU "attempt to deceive" penalty is ridiculous. If that really is the rule, then it's a very stupid rule. Attempting to deceive is part of the whole damn point of football. As a defensive player it's your job to stay alert to everything (as my old coach always said), and if you get fooled it shouldn't be the ref's job to bail you out.

When I was in school and playing sports, if anyone on the team did something that got a penalty called, that player would sit out the rest of the quarter, inning, half, or game; depending on what the penalty was for and the severity of the penalty!!! Then either that person or the team as a whole got the privilege of running extra laps, doing gut busters, or some other form of reprimand for being so stupid!!!

Perhaps because the "deception" occurs prior to the snap of the football. All the others that you have mentioned occur AFTER the ball has been snapped.
good point, but there's still deception that occurs prior to the snap that isn't called a unsportsmanlike conduct. for example, i remember seeing one college play (i think it was michigan state) where the offense lined up like they were running a normal play, but before the snap, they had everyone run off the field and had their special teams run out onto the field, but actually what happened was that only 10 people "traded' positions instead of 11, and one wide receiver stayed in-bounds, and they ran a fake field goal and threw to the wide open receiver (because no one on the defense knew he was even there, they thought he ran off the field)

Deception prior to the snap that is legal would be like a fake spike, where the qb is making the spike motion and then throws a pass instead of spiking the ball. Georgia tech got away with the fake substitution on a field goal against clemson.
If I’m a coach and my players get an unsportsmanlike behavior penalty for stupid acts like these, I’m pulling them off the field for the remainder of the game! I don’t care what their overall contribution to the team is; a 15yrd penalty for celebrating is BULLSHIT, especially when you know it’s going to be called every single time!!! The purpose of these penalties is to maintain the "amateur" myth of Division I football. They're trying to teach the boys character, etc... Complete nonsense for NFL farm teams.

The way the play was designed is where it is intentionally deceiving. I'm am butchering the way it is worded. They gave a really good explanation if you google the play.
This is one of the reasons I don't watch the game I loved at one point. They can't have any fun any more. It's all business. When a NFL QB can play a whole season without getting hurt. You know there is something wrong! Look how long Tom Brady has played. No injuries.

Unsportmanlike conduct although overblown on occasion is a good rule. It promotes no being a bad sport or a douche and shows kids that watch not to act like assholes. I play football and it sucks because when a douche does it, theres not much you can do except chirp back and then you get in trouble. I also play baseball and if someone showboats home run or whatnot you simply throw a ball at him to see a message XD. I played and love hockey and thats the best because you can really police your own sport.
That's the difference with hockey right there. If you don't like someone showboating or celebrating because they crammed a puck up your ass, you go and take care of him! I bet in a few years they're going to make it where if you score a touchdown you're going to have to walk up to each player on the opposing team and apologize. Getting flags, unsportsmanlike conduct, and 15-25yd penalties for doing so is not so fun to watch!!!
When I was in school and playing sports, if anyone on the team did something that got a penalty called, that player would sit out the rest of the quarter, inning, half, or game; depending on what the penalty was for and the severity of the penalty!!!
Then either that person or the team as a whole got the privilege of running extra laps, doing gut busters, or some other form of reprimand for being so stupid!!!

This is not only a spectator sport, it's a GAME. People should be allowed to have fun. It gets the crowd going. Why do you think FIFA has become so popular? Because they have ridiculous celebrations after every goal, and it's ENTERTAINING. This is why I don't watch football. They're just against any sort of fun or pride in the game. They expect all of the players to be robots.

The taunting is a fact of life. They deserve to celebrate. This is a great video that should not exist.

Perhaps because the "deception" occurs prior to the snap of the football. All the others that you have mentioned occur AFTER the ball has been snapped.
good point, but there's still deception that occurs prior to the snap that isn't called a unsportsmanlike conduct. for example, i remember seeing one college play (i think it was michigan state) where the offense lined up like they were running a normal play, but before the snap, they had everyone run off the field and had their special teams run out onto the field, but actually what happened was that only 10 people "traded' positions instead of 11, and one wide receiver stayed in-bounds, and they ran a fake field goal and threw to the wide open receiver (because no one on the defense knew he was even there, they thought he ran off the field)
ImaginaryHuman072889 If you're talking about the michigan game against rutgers, they were actually penalized for that because that's considered a simulated replacement of a player in order to confuse an opponent. Deception prior to the snap that is legal would be like a fake spike, where the qb is making the spike motion and then throws a pass instead of spiking the ball. Georgia tech got away with the fake substitution on a field goal against clemson.
Most of this game is making the opposing team think you are going to do something you're not. That's every play! Am I missing something here?

The purpose of these penalties is to maintain the "amateur" myth of Division I football. They're trying to teach the boys character, etc... Complete nonsense for NFL farm teams.

I don't get how diving into the end zone is "unsportsmanlike conduct". I mean if there are people behind you really close trying to tackle you, I'd jump into the end zone too. It shouldn't be a penalty for not wanting to get slammed in the back.

The second to last dive could be construed as the player being unsure of his surroundings and diving to ensure he made it in.

This is one of the reasons I don't watch the game I loved at one point. They can't have any fun any more. It's all business. When a NFL QB can play a whole season without getting hurt. You know there is something wrong! Look how long Tom Brady has played. No injuries.

Unsportmanlike conduct although overblown on occasion is a good rule. It promotes no being a bad sport or a douche and shows kids that watch not to act like assholes. I play football and it sucks because when a douche does it, theres not much you can do except chirp back and then you get in trouble. I also play baseball and if someone showboats home run or whatnot you simply throw a ball at him to see a message XD. I played and love hockey and thats the best because you can really police your own sport.
That's the difference with hockey right there. If you don't like someone showboating or celebrating because they crammed a puck up your ass, you go and take care of him! I bet in a few years they're going to make it where if you score a touchdown you're going to have to walk up to each player on the opposing team and apologize. Then if they win, they will have to write a letter to each of their parents and apologize for embarrassing their precious little boy.
