Digital Photography How To Shoot Baseball

A little while ago I asked who was in my general area and would like to come out and photograph a real baseball game with me. We had a lot of readers e mail in and I selected six to join me for a day at the Camden River Sharks game. This is a first in what I hope will be long running tradition of having readers join me on photo shoots to learn. This is the real world Super Secret Project where we actually go out and learn together.
After taking a tour of the stadium to see where we were aloud to shoot from we sat in the dugout for a learning session. As you will see in the video we discussed the basics of photographing baseball. Everything from where we will be standing to proper composition to how not to get hit with a foul ball.
Everyone had a blast learning and shooting. At the end of the video you will see a walk through of the images I captured as well as a critique of some of the readers photos. This is another long form video so let me know what you think of the format and what you are learning from it.

Jared, great video mate! Enjoyed the whole thing. Great to see actual examples of photos taken at different apertures and what effect they have. I have taken your advice and not brought a kit lens, gone for the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 and now saving up for the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8!

I like what Jared just said... Quality over Quantity... I shoot for news, sports, and etc. but I don't use my camera like a machine gun. I shoot with Pentax system, and planning to get me a Nikon D700 for its full frame sensor and great quality.
Great videos, great tips and infos, great guy! =)

@Musicmixer1994 I just bought a d3100 with that lens, it doesn't really have much zoom, but i got some ok shots. The problem with that lens is the minimum aperture.

I only motor drive during my own baseball games to break down my brother's pitching and his swing. He does the same for my at bats. When photographing other games I shoot single to challenge myself. I guess growing up in Baseball helps :)

@Gibson2471 Hello, NEF stands for "Nikon Electronic File", this is normal. Depending on what version of aperture or lightroom you are using, the software may not recognize the format out of the camera. Aperture 3 will be supported and patched by Apple, if you search for updates it should have Nikon D3100 support, if you are using Aperture 2 you might be out of luck, Apples leaves old software alone :( Not sure about lightroom, probably the same thing

@rashvinpillay increase your ISO so you can take pictures in faster shutter speed, then you experience less blurriness in your photos. (Note that as you increase the ISO, you photos will have some grain.)

  • @froknowsphoto

@crapper1 of course there all important and thats not easily conveyed in a short video. Many of my readers are beginners looking for a starting point. Once you have a starting point than you can go explore and start to understand the different settings. Blowing out the background aka creating separation between your subject and background.

    Hi Jared,
Great work as always, looking forward to more vids and tutorials, they are really helpful and amazing!
May I ask you about the video that describes your way of working with black and whites? I saw that you do that type relatively often, and they look cool. I can see what exactly are you doing to them, but are there any guides that you have, or try to fallow, or some "rules" sort of speak for B/W?
    Thanks in advance!

i love this hoping to get the d3100 soon just shooting with a fixed focus kodak zx3 camcorder (not really ment for intese photos but still fun) after watching your videos i probally will end up feeling right at home in the dslr from the way you teach photography and showing how the f-stop changes how the photos come out and how iso is good and bad if used wrong keep it up your a god send to budding photographers everywhere

@rightguard88 Well some of thier camera's can handle it also they could have edited the noise out a little bit.

  • @hyp3rsn0w
    @hyp3rsn0w 11 ปีที่แล้ว

RAW is just the ones and zeros of the photo which comes directly from the sensor. JPEG is just the image file where the camera makes decisions for you on what should be the highlights and shadows that are in the pic. when dealing with RAW, you will need a good editing program (Lightroom). also if you cant afford to pay for it, there are plenty of "special sites" (thepiratebay) that will be very financially beneficial.

I understand you're busy so feel free to ignore this comment. At 20:18, that butt shot, I like it a lot, but in other videos I've seen critiques that lead me to ask: Would the shot have been better composed by shifting to the right to give the same amount of space to the player on the far right and far left, which would have cut off the man on the left edge and included the right player's foot. I'm just curious, not being critical. I really love all of these shots, I just want to improve my composition so I seek clarification. Have an awesome day!

  • @setosail

Noting makes me more mad then cutting off the feet, or the head.
Btw, do you think that it is important to make sure you get the right kind of battery grip? Because I am looking for one for Christmas, but some are like $300, and I don't want to sped that much. Does it REALLY matter which kind you get?

Do you have an understand of the exposure triangle or are you shooting in auto? Blurry images could be for many reasons. One example is to slow of a shutter speed or not high of an ISO to allow you to get faster shutter speed. Please check out my beginner guide on the web site under video guides.

Mike G could be a couple things. Shutter speed is too slow (you want 1/1000th as a general minimum). Focus mode is not set to continuous (servo/afc) and is in single shot instead. Wrong focus point set up (generally want a single point in the center).
