Consumer Reports recently listed Audi as the most reliable vehicle among SUV manufacturers. I bought one, an SQ5, and I"m looking forward to many years of problem free driving. First scheduled maintenance is free. The car wants to go much faster than I can drive it, which is why I tell my friends to buy the Q5 if they are in the market for a good SUV. I don't need to go 155 mph, nor do I need to drive at 100 mph on a two lane country road which I recently did without realizing how fast I was going. I thought I was going 70. Awesome car.
You can look forward to many years of problem free driving all you want, but anything from VW is notoriously unreliable, and costly to repair out of warranty.
Wonderful review. Very thorough and practical. I especially like the breakdown of the numbers with the numbers kn the screen. Q5 is definitely the best mid sized SUV for me.
i know Im randomly asking but does any of you know a trick to get back into an instagram account? I somehow forgot my password. I would love any assistance you can give me.
Hello Alex! In your future videos. In the fuel efficiency segment, can you please to mention, not jusy the current car mpg, but it's regular, or premium. Thank you
I notice inconsistencies in the ratings given here, especially compared to BMW X3. You have given both Handling and Ride "A" for X3 but gave B- and B for Q5, while at the same time you say that Q5 handles and rides better than X3.
Put the big phone in the big hole with the usb plug that you are plugged into 9:50 Because even if it would fit the small compartment you tried to cram it into, you would pinch the wire when you shut the arm rest
Not an usually design, it is done for safety in case on a rear end Collison 2:19 Notice the clam shell shaped hatch door will transfer energy to the side structure of the vehicle, notice it overlaps the sides 2:27
conan900 Audi’s reasoning is that certain models are mostly purchased by females, and one of their complaints is carbon soot from exhaust tips wiping onto their legs and clothing when accessing the rear cargo area. On models that are mostly purchased by males, such as most of the S and RS models, there are real exhaust tips. An exception to this would be the SQ5, but it’s rumored that they’ll change that on the refresh.
Keep in mind that manufacturers measure legroom differently, so their stated "combined legroom" should be taken with a grain of salt. For example, the Infiniti Q50 claimed to have a combined legroom of 79.6", but in reality it has noticeably less legroom than Acura TLX, which has 77.1" of combined legroom!
I know it's not apples to apples, but in terms of value how does the 2 liter turbo Edge compare to the Q 5 and the also the Mazda CX 5? Zero to 60 times don't mean that much to me.
This Audi Q5 is built of the Volkswagen Group MLB platform that is shared with the Audi A4, Audi A5, Audi A6, Audi A7, Audi A8, Porsche Macan and the second generation Audi Q7 And can be had for 2 to 3K more than the price of a sub-compact entry level GLA-class built off of the crappy sub-compact CLA-class car platform Or the sub-compact BMW X1 that is super stiff because it is built off of the Brilliance Chinese car platform that BMW brought over from China And run through the whole sub-compact Mini line-up as well as the BMW 2 series Gran Coupe as a cost cutting feature
Absolutely an excellent review. Thank You! How are the 2018's with reliability? I own a 2011 and I loved it so much but, the mechanical problems cost so very much. Can I expect better reliability after 50K on these models?
Depends on what you consider reliable. If it's within warranty for 4 years/50K miles like US cars, then yes, these are reliable. After that, good luck. Once my Q5 hit 60K miles, everything started to break. The coolant pump has failed twice; both times replaced by the dealer, but the second time after the 1-year parts warranty expired. A small oil leak was also fixed at my dealer, but unfortunately 2012 models like mine do not qualify for the class action lawsuit that Audi paid out in the US for the 2.0T engine. www.carcomplaints.com/news/2014/audi-oil-consumption-lawsuit.shtml
Looking At the competition one thing comes abundantly clear, Lexus really makes the slowest cud of the bunch by a lot. No upper trim engine and abundance of turbo lag. Lexus really is lacking
How about including operating cost and reliability figures from J.D Power in your videos. I doesn’t matter how nice it drives or how may gadgets it has if it’s constantly in the shop.
Michael Quaiser this is a great point! All the German cars concern me, because all all my friends who’ve owned Audi’s, BMW’s, or Mercedes complain about all the time they spend at the dealer for repairs.
Legnum S, yes I know. However the best indicator of cost of ownership and reliability is to quote for the previous model. At least you will get an indication.
I wish your future reviews will include something about the sound system. I know everyone's hearing is different, but I would be interested in your opinion regardless.
I think your assessment of spec ing q5 vs nx is incorrect.you said q5 will come out cheaper. Lexus nx will be cheaper.nx has adaptive cruise and a few other feature standard.its starts at a lower price and even if u add AWD and other packages nx comes out cheaper
I agree with many other commenters in their worry that they're gonna spend so much money on maintenance that it isn't worth buying the car. I'm not sure German engineering is all that if it means that you're paying thru the nose to keep that engineering on the road. They look great though.
Nice review and I recently got a 2018 Q5. It is observed there is a ABS check / test / synchronization (kind off click you can feel it in on the gas pedal) when you accelerate between 28-32 MPH or 40-44 kms/phr. This is performed every time when the vehicle is shut down completely and restarted again. I was told this is something new in the latest generation Audi. Any reason why this info was neglected?
Another excellent review. Your final two choices are spot on. I would personally choose the XC60 myself. Especially since Audi refuses to use touch screens... they need to get over that.
Premium Plus model (with cold weather package) is a real value. You can also get over $3K discount. That virtual cockpit could get slow in time, one might skip it. X3 is awesome but no Spare tire unless you destroy the shape of your cargo space. In 50-60K range, why dont you go with F-Pace.
I would take my money and go buy a Lexus RX instead of this. Not only would I be one class up, but I’d actually get my money’s worth. Germans are doing the typical “American are stupid, they won’t know we made the car cheaper. We sell a lot of them”. Screw that
I love German cars - (I own one), but let's be real: the only cars in this class that are not going to cost thousands of dollars in maintenance after 3 years are most certainly the Japanese slow pokes.
When u buy these cars brand new it will drive good till 60k or 80k. After u reach this u will have lots of issues. I own Q5, I am very upset with continue issues and cost to fix it. About GLC and X3 i dont know. Q5 i have very bad experience.
I like how at least BMW offers the I6 on their X3. Have the N55 on my '13 X3 and it has quite a bit more power than anything other than the SQ5 or GLC AMG
I don’t understand why the Q5 is too expensive. Audi moved production to Mexico, and it pays the workers around $15 a week, instead of $15 an hour, and yet Audi still selling the Q5 for $41,500.00?
What is the point of having redundant hazards while tailgate is open? I've watched a thousand or two US-car crashes and less than 0.5% of drivers use hazards in case of hazard.
I know it is minor, but could you decrease your usage of the word etcetera? We know you aren't listing everything and I lost count how many times you said it in this video.
when i see Q5 i think toureg etc.. i know they are different but i keep thinking its the same vehicle with different panels, interiors etc... like GM does
no touch screen, who cares, they freeze some times anyways... for me, I'm concerned about the cup holders (cause if shorter and want to slide the middle armrest forward, it looks like it'll cover the dam coffee cup holders, of which look a bit deep and low to reach, already.. blocking access, makes it worst !! Gotta have coffee !! replacing some tranny fluid very often, due to it's design is more concern... I'm kinda liking this and will go test drive one this week, maybe tomorrow... I've never been an Audi fan, cause they were shit many years ago.. but if they're better now, for sure, I guess it's worth a look... I love my awd locking rear diff on my santa fe, but if this doesn't have it, but it's a strong torque system, I can deal with it.. cause I do venture milder off roading.. yeehaaa .. I don't care if it handles amazing, as long as it's decent, and he said it's 72 Decibels of which, cabin quietness is a key criteria for me, so that doesn't sound very quiet ? RDX is 70DB, so I heard... anyone know what's considered quiet ? I think under 70 is quiet and 70+ is not really luxury quiet ? my santa fe is not so quiet and people complain when i'm on blue tooth... Anyone have any feedback re: decibel rating and maintenance costs for Audi's ?
Tried hard to love this new Q5; can't get past (1.) Fake exhausts (2.) Made in Mexico (even fake on the SQ5). Drive clearly inferior to both the Porsche Macan and the BMW X3. The tough choice in this segment is the Macan S and the X3M40! Audi is just OK and the Porsche and BMW are outstanding. Can't lose with either. REPLY
My Kia Soul Exclaim has ventilated and heated front seats and rear heated seats. Not to mention a much better infotainment system. For $50k I get a Ford Explorer Platinum.
Not sure why you don’t bring Lincoln MKC or MKX into the discussion. It is no longer just a rebadged Ford and definitely not your grandpa’s. I get that the MKC has poor backseat but let’s face it- most people are not taking these CUV’s on weekly family vacations. The German lux is way overpriced and maintenance is ridiculous. MKC Reserve or Black Label is 6k or so less than comparable German and is mighty luxurious. Adaptive cruise, touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Bridge of Weir leather, real wood trim, lane departure, etc... So you won’t do sub 6 to 60mph in an MKC but really who cares? Fine for real world driving. Truly believe Audi has reviewers in their pocket...
i choose a old RX450h instead of this and never looked back ...greetings from germany. This smaller Audi weighs 1900-2000kg in 2019; a 10 year old RX450h with a 3,5ltrV6 plus Hybrid weighs 2150kg which i think is not so bad for a over 10 year old Luxury SUV without having so much aluminium but airsuspension, full interated HUD, electric adjustable wooden steeringwheel, moonroof and and and ;-)
Those wheels couldn't be any uglier....and those are the best looking ones out of the three you get to choose from. It's a shame that Audi doesn't give us the same wheel options here in the states that they offer in Europe. Even Mazda offers sporty wheels. Shame on you Audi for making the new Q5 look as bland as the Q7.
Those cupholders???? It almost looks like you have to raise the armrest, which I would never normally do while driving, just to allow a cup to actually be placed into the holders. Am I looking at this wrong? I would rate those as the "MOST IMPRACTICAL" instead of "most practical". Hopefully I just looked at this wrong. Otherwise, the Germans need a lesson in AMERICAN practicality.
Lucian I would love get a Volvo, especially with all the discounts they're providing. But every reliability reports seems to indicate poor reliability - especially the newer cars. And consumers forums support these reports. Have you seen other reports that show otherwise, esp on the new generation of Volvo cars?
Not really digging the Audi interiors. I wonder when they will come to the realization that cars don't need the center iPad style display when the gauge cluster is one big display and could easily accommodate all the functionality that are in the center display. Add the front window projection for basic stats and that would complete the system and remove the dependency on the goofy iPad style center display and clutter below that controls it.
mlody me I think they try to account for the front passenger too. They need to see radio stations and what not. Especially since it’s not a driver focused car like the TT or the R8.
The RX is bigger than the Q5. My coworker has a Q5 and I have driven RX 350s a couple of times. Honestly, the RX rides a bit smoother and slightly quieter, but the Q5 is better-looking I think. Can't really speak to the driving dynamics of the Q5, but the RX is "meh". I also have had an NX as a loaner, and it's much closer to the Q5 in size.
ARentz07 are you kidding? The rx350 was one of the worst car ive been in. The engine was loud as hell the suspension was hard and from the back seat you could hear every little bump it hit. Also the interior had no technology while the q5 has the virtual cockpit and apple car play/android auto.
Audi is not good. ⭕Poor quality in material and manufacturing, especially in non-visible places. ⭕Cheap electronics made in China. ⭕Unreliable software. ⭕Terrible value for money. Conclusion: Driving Audi is not fun but trouble! 😖
I will never again buy an Audi. It's a German piece of shit. I had 2012 Q5 after 60,000 miles everything started to go wrong. Not to mention oil consumption, I was paying more for oil then for insurance
German cars off warranty are a bit of a gamble. I've owned many, and there are always issues with them. They can't be beat for comfort, sportiness and great handling though.
Really disappointed by the interiors: too much bad plastic. Also the monthly subscription for infotainment services, as if it wasn't really expensive as a optional in the first place. Also no driving active assistances... Exterior design is standard but good, good lights. But the bad points come from the driving. FWD unless slipping tires is a big turn off. Engine numbers are less than sporty. Acceleration is far from leading the class, e.g. the Stelvio. Shortly, has Audi lost the two main selling points, the interiors quality and the technology?
No they haven't, it's just your private opinion. I think the interior quality and look exceeds everything in the class. I tend to like a look that is simplistic and elegant. Now that's just my opinion.
.4 of a second acceleration to 60 classifies sporty vs non-sporty? I would hope the Stelvio is faster, it has more power. Talk about a car that will be in the shop all the time = Stelvio
This is one of the best auto review channels.
Thank you, about adding extra details about transmission.

Your free to your own opinions but not your own facts. Most reliable SUV rating gives him the best chance of maintenance free driving.
How's it serving you so far?
Thorough. Best car reviewer on TH-cam.
Very comprehensive review. Well done. Thank you.

Hello Alex!
In your future videos.
In the fuel efficiency segment, can you please to mention, not jusy the current car mpg, but it's regular, or premium.

You’re gonna spend 50k on a car and not use premium ? 🤦🏻♂️
Very good question!

and a cabin noise - Q5 its quietest SUV - 72db??? whole review its untrustworthy

No excuse for faux exhaust tips. Especially on a luxury vehicle.
conan900

I don't get the reasoning.
Why? Who cares if the smoke goes sideways or down? I honestly don't see the cons of this??
Oh please, I don't really care about them
Looks like the only place a phone fits in that vehicle is a) in the trunk b) smaller phone will fit in glove compartment.
flip phone!! hah!!
Drive you car... not play with your phone!!! Besides - that is what car play is for...
I Wish The Mazda CX-5 Signature Was Displayed In The Vehicle Size Cart Comparison at 1:20...
Excellent rapid fire presentation.
Another great review!! Keep it up.
You taught me more about my new car and its features than my dealer did! I'm too lazy to read the 200 pages manual...
It's because Audi's are front wheel drive dominant and always have been 17:38
Keep in mind that manufacturers measure legroom differently, so their stated "combined legroom" should be taken with a grain of salt. For example, the Infiniti Q50 claimed to have a combined legroom of 79.6", but in reality it has noticeably less legroom than Acura TLX, which has 77.1" of combined legroom!
Exactly, this is something I touch on regularly but not necessarily in every review.
Love your comparison style....👍
Great review, thank you
I know it's not apples to apples, but in terms of value how does the 2 liter turbo Edge compare to the Q 5 and the also the Mazda CX 5? Zero to 60 times don't mean that much to me.
....and I have a 2016 A6 SLine and absolutely love it in Mythos Black Mettalic. Wanted to love the Q5 as my second vehicle. Not gonna do it......
Need to do a review of the MB GLC 300!
This Audi Q5 is built of the Volkswagen Group MLB platform that is shared with the Audi A4, Audi A5, Audi A6, Audi A7, Audi A8, Porsche Macan and the second generation Audi Q7
And can be had for 2 to 3K more than the price of a sub-compact entry level GLA-class built off of the crappy sub-compact CLA-class car platform
Or the sub-compact BMW X1 that is super stiff because it is built off of the Brilliance Chinese car platform that BMW brought over from China
And run through the whole sub-compact Mini line-up as well as the BMW 2 series Gran Coupe as a cost cutting feature
@Alex - what about compared to JAGUAR F-Pace?
awesome detailed review...
Absolutely an excellent review. Thank You! How are the 2018's with reliability? I own a 2011 and I loved it so much but, the mechanical problems cost so very much. Can I expect better reliability after 50K on these models?
Alex can you do a comparison between Audi Q5 AWD with Quattro and Acura RDX super handling AWD?
how does they 2022 Hyundai Tucson hybrid compare to the audi q5?!
Alex, could you please tell us if these are reliable or not?
Depends on what you consider reliable. If it's within warranty for 4 years/50K miles like US cars, then yes, these are reliable. After that, good luck. Looking At the competition one thing comes abundantly clear, Lexus really makes the slowest cud of the bunch by a lot. No upper trim engine and abundance of turbo lag. Lexus really is lacking

Legnum S, yes I know. However the best indicator of cost of ownership and reliability is to quote for the previous model. At least you will get an indication.
I totally agree... +Alexonautos can you fulfill our wishes?
I think all auto journalist should do it.
This is like the 2005 Camry of luxury CUVs ... which is probably why it sells like a Camry did in 2005
I wish your future reviews will include something about the sound system. I know everyone's hearing is different, but I would be interested in your opinion regardless.
The B & O system is awesome. Best I have ever had.
Are you comparing this to the 2017 X3 or 2018 X3?
Just picked the 2.0 up. Love it. Is premium gas a must?
didn't come with owners manual?
Would the 2018 X3 be a better value?
So the CUV class is one size smaller than small SUV's like the CRV?
Do you have instgram
Sub-compact suv
when r u doing the durango SRT
How comparable do you think the Acura RDX would be vs 2018 Audi Q5? I think the rdx offers much more.
Emon Khan Thr Buick Envision offers even more than the RDX. Plus the RDX is as old as they come in this segment.
Any plans to review the Land Rover discovery?
I think your assessment of spec ing q5 vs nx is incorrect.you said q5 will come out cheaper. Lexus nx will be cheaper.nx has adaptive cruise and a few other feature standard.its starts at a lower price and even if u add AWD and other packages nx comes out cheaper
Alex, why you're not calling out Macan in any of the comparisons on those Lux crossovers? Personally, I see this is a miss
Not exactly competing if you look at $$$$.
Macan is consistently 10-15k more if equipped similarly to the Q5... that’s not the same price bracket
I agree with many other commenters in their worry that they're gonna spend so much money on maintenance that it isn't worth buying the car. I'm not sure German engineering is all that if it means that you're paying thru the nose to keep that engineering on the road. They look great though.

The front door and dashboard design looks super cheap compared to XC60 or GLC and that wood is like 1990's buick
Won't you every review the MINI Countryman S All4?
Another excellent review. Your final two choices are spot on. I would personally choose the XC60 myself. Especially since Audi refuses to use touch screens... they need to get over that.
D F the twincharge Volvo engine would keep it away as my choice
When oh when will you review the 2018 BMW X3?
*THE TAIL LIGHT LOOKS LIKE THE LETTER A* 1:55
Getting B on both handling and ride seems subpar for a luxury vehicle.
Why is Rdx not included in comparison.
Jag is garbage and tacky. Far too much plastic

Will you review the Acura RDX 2018?
Here's the 2016 revew: th-cam.com/video/bakTec6q8JA/w-d-xo.html
Not sure they've changed the RDX enough for 2018 to warrant another review, IMHO.
Thank you
I know the quality is there but this has to be the most dourly looking interior.
Beauti car
I think I'll go with mazda cx9
Q5, new X3 or GLC?
Bautista Prea Look at a Buick Envision 2.0T. It has similar feature content but $10,000-15,000 less than those.
Norm T lol there are no Buicks in Argentina
Bautista Prea Import one. It'll be well worth it new or used.
Nobody interested in a German SUV is cross shopping a shitty domestic Buick. Sorry.

egboks because they were looking to increase their own profit margins lol
The reason i choose Japanese cars
Not sure if they moved manufacturing to pass down the savings to the consumer.
I like the looks of the back. Not so much the front
Still better than any Mercedes or BMW.
PCMasterRace But not at a dollar for feature content of a Buick Envision Prem for $31K.
Nobody gives a shit about Buick, except grandpa and grandma. Again, sorry.
@@OMGWTFLOLSMH Buick sells almost as much as Audi. Much more than Acura.
What is the point of having redundant hazards while tailgate is open? I've watched a thousand or two US-car crashes and less than 0.5% of drivers use hazards in case of hazard.
US law mandates that lights can be seen when the tailgate is open. This is how Audi complies.
I wouldn't name Audi Q5 a crossover. It's a SUV.
I know it is minor, but could you decrease your usage of the word etcetera? We know you aren't listing everything and I lost count how many times you said it in this video.
Talk about nitpicking.
when i see Q5 i think toureg etc.. i know they are different but i keep thinking its the same vehicle with different panels, interiors etc... like GM does
No touch screen, why Audi?
touch screen requires the driver to take their eyes off the road to operate, not as safe.
no touch screen, who cares, they freeze some times anyways... for me, I'm concerned about the cup holders (cause if shorter and want to slide the middle armrest forward, it looks like it'll cover the dam coffee cup holders, of which look a bit deep and low to reach, already.. blocking access, makes it worst !! Shame on you Audi for making the new Q5 look as bland as the Q7.
Luxury cuv crown goes to Lexus RX.
no. The Lexus RX is dated and slow
Bext?
But it's so booooring. Snooze.
Shahnewaz Ahmed And when did cars have to be this boring? Soulless. Generic.
_How_ old are you? Personally I think it looks great, one of the reasons I would buy it.
Couldn't agree more. It's gorgeous without being goddy.
Looks are subjective.
They deliberately made the styling to target their main buyer: well heeled females, age 25-55.
You don't have to raise it, depends on how you position the holder and arm rest though
I don't care for it; I don't know why.
Oh no! Offline media. Great video otherwise still.
Bext
Volvo XC40 will be the best one. Once it's released.
XC60 is the best at the moment.
The Cereal Tree wait and see. Volvo doesn't skimp out on material quality, unlike others.
Lucian it's too bad volvos reliability is horrendous.
wasabi9111 too bad you're spreading bullshit.
Lucian I would love get a Volvo, especially with all the discounts they're providing. But every reliability reports seems to indicate poor reliability - especially the newer cars. And consumers forums support these reports.
Have you seen other reports that show otherwise, esp on the new generation of Volvo cars?
wasabi9111 Please look at newer reports closer. In UK Volvo is #1 in reliability.
All Audi’s look way too similar 😣
Beamers have the same snoz for the past 30years
What car manufacturer doesn’t?
2018 no touch screen no adaptive cruise control !!!
Hojat Mahdavi it does have adaptive cruise control
Not really digging the Audi interiors. I wonder when they will come to the realization that cars don't need the center iPad style display when the gauge cluster is one big display and could easily accommodate all the functionality that are in the center display. Add the front window projection for basic stats and that would complete the system and remove the dependency on the goofy iPad style center display and clutter below that controls it.
mlody me I think they try to account for the front passenger too. They need to see radio stations and what not. Especially since it’s not a driver focused car like the TT or the R8.
It's much better than Lexus RX...
Preok Saha Q5 competes with RX. The same size.
Lexus products are uglier than a can of smashed assholes.
Audi is not good.
⭕Poor quality in material and manufacturing, especially in non-visible places.
⭕Cheap electronics made in China.
⭕Unreliable software.
⭕Terrible value for money.
Conclusion:
Driving Audi is not fun but trouble!
😖
Mercedes Benz have better interiors than Audi nd bmw but rather get a Lexus for reliability
Lexus = Predator Face. Hard pass.

Yet another boring German car.. zzzzzzz
It's not a car, but who makes an "exciting" one, in your esteemed opinion?
Another boring Audi
george mcray hay At least it has a great engine and driving capabilities unlike the Lexus nX turd
james 699 link to where it shows the reliability on a 5 year old Lexus turbo please?
George McCray lol
I just got a new Stelvio!!
Audi ULTRA *LAME*
