Welcome to I’ll Knit (& Spin!) If I want To! I asked y’all to send in some of your questions (from everything from fiber arts, to designing and on!) so I could put together a little video for y’all every Friday doing my best to answer your questions!
In this week’s episode we cover:
    1. Hello from Australia! I love watching your videos on Saturday mornings when I have a lie in and husband entertains the kids. I always knit along whilst you chat and answer questions. Such a lovely ritual. I'm just finishing up your Baubles pattern but gearing up to do the last section of the pattern... the trickiest Brioche ill have ever knitted, i keep putting it off because im scared! its so beautiful by the way. so I have 2 questions (one about baubles and one about another pattern) question 1: lifelines. I use a lifeline in the lace so when I slip up and lose concentration I pull back to the knit/purl row, but for the tricky brioche bit, where do you recommend placing a lifeline? question 2: for the next pattern I'll begin- Winters beach cardi; I've just realised it has no buttons, I think you've mentioned before, but could you give me an indication of the best method of doing a button hole band for this cardi? if you were going to do buttons on this particular pattern of yours, which method would you use? I was planning I think to just do one button I think, in the middle. Anyway, it would absolutely delight me to hear my question answered when I watch along one of these weekends :)
One row Buttonhole Tutorial: • 1-Row Buttonhole
    2. I am curious about sock heel techniques and the advantages or disadvantages of different types. Last fall I participated in the Curio KAL because I was interested in the afterthought heel. I had made several unsatisfactory attempts at different cuff-down socks where I got lost while turning a traditional heel. I loved the Curio socks and have made two more pairs! I have now moved on the the DRK Everyday socks and notice that you are using a different heel technique. Why? I would love to hear your thoughts around how you choose a heel technique for a pattern.
    3. I can't decide which of your "big" shawls to knit. I've only knit one skein shawls so far and don't find them very useful. I like ponchos, but want to try something different. I'd like a really cozy drapey shawl with good depth at the back. I've never tried half fisherman's rib or brioche so am hesitant to try a pattern with these stitches in it. I need a pattern where row count isn't critical, ie I'll be able to increase the size if necessary. I never seem to be able to match row gauge in a pattern. Which of your shawls do you recommend?

    4. Hi Andrea ! Love love your podcast ♥️ I am soooo confused about putting my spinning on a storage bobbin. So when I put it on storage bobbins and I am ready to ply; do I have to then put it back on a different bobbin so that it is going the way I spun it in the first place? I swore you said we could put it on storage bobbins and then ply from those. However some of the ladies in our spinning group think we would have to set it back to the way we spun it. Please un confuse me lol. (Is that a word🤔)
    5. For 2 color colorwork, I hold one color in each hand. (Which I learned from one of your Weekly videos!) but there’s been a few times where I have to have three colors going and I really struggle trying to figure out how to hold it all. I’m curious what you do. Do you hold two in one hand, and one in the other? Or do you drop a strand and pick it back up when needed? Or something else? I just need to find a much better way of doing it. help!!

Hi!I had the pleasure of meeting you and Spicy Pete at Wool and Folk; both of you were so gracious and friendly, thank you for taking the time to chat! What I didn’t get to say there is that you make knitting so much fun and accessible, as a beginner knitter watching you every week makes trying new knitting techniques less scary. I also watch I’ll Knit if I Want To every Saturday morning while I knit and have coffee, such a great way to start the weekend!

I always love when the spinning bits are part of the episode:) Another good use for storage bobbins, even if you're not spinning worsted, is to even out how the ply pulls off the bobbin, avoiding the peaks and valleys that can make plying sort of herky-jerky if done straight off the spun bobbins. And they're also good when you're doing a big project, say a sweater. You can spin, wind off smoothly onto storage bobbins, and let them accumulate, then mix and match the bobbins when it's time to ply. Helps to even out the inevitable inconsistencies over a long-term spin. I put numbered stickers on the bobbins as I finish each one, and ply 1 + 8, 2 + 7, 3 + 6, etc. I'm a long-time spinner, but still think like a beginner, and I always see learn something new from you taking about your spins. Thank you!

I finally just got to watch your episode 84, a week late. It was so much fun to see that you're wearing the Rose cardigan as I'm sitting here knitting it! I just love the yarn, the color palette that I chose, and the fun combination of skills used in this pattern. I got guage, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will come together (like a puzzle) in the end to fit me well so that I can enjoy it. It's such an interesting pattern, and I'm now finishing the third quadrant. So glad you were sporting it in this episode. I so love the warm way you talk to us in your podcast!

I was so excited to meet you in the parking lot of Wool and Folk! You were so sweet and took a picture with me. It made my weekend extra special. ❤ You are my favorite designer and I love watching your podcast every week. I find the podcast fun to watch because you are always light and cheerful. I also enjoy hearing about your spinning because my spinning needs improving. Actually love hearing about your sewing too, but I work and don’t have enough time to sew. You are inspiring! Also, as someone with lupus and a former runner, I can relate to you when you talk about your health. I picked up yarn for the Big Cozy Cardigan at Wool and Folk and am already knitting it. Thank you for such wonderful patterns.

Hi Andrea! I know it wasn't in this video, but in a recent episode you mentioned being a chronic empty tanker and I can definitely relate. Following the advice you've given in so many episodes, I started gifting myself 25 minutes in front of my wheel in the mornings while I have coffee and my toddler plays and it has been life-changing. Feels so good to have those few minutes to myself every morning to do something that is just for me. Love your videos!

On the heel flap issue--if the circumference around the front of your ankle to the back of your heel is proportionally large (this can be true even if you have small feet), many heel flaps may not be deep enough/have a large enough gusset for you.
For example, my go-to sock is a formula by Allison Griffith called Socks by the Numbers. Say I cast on 48 sts (working top down) for the leg, and work the heel flap on 24 sts. Allison's formula would have me work 24 rows in the heel flap, with every other stitch slipped on knit rows. This does not work for me. I need 3-4 more rows than that to get a deep enough heel flap (and thus, a large enough gusset). In this case I might do 27 rows (I start my heel flaps by knitting across half the heel sts starting at the BOR, then count my heel flap rows starting with the first purl row and ending with a purl row).
It may also be more comfortable to have a wider heel--meaning, 6 sts in between the first decreases in the heel turn, instead of 4 sts (which seems to be typical). For example, if your heel flap is 24 sts wide, your first knit row in the heel turn will go like this: k 15 (this is 9+6), k2tog, k1, turn. Your second row in the heel turn will be sl 1, p7 (this is 1+6), p2tog, p1, turn. 9 + 6 + 9 = 24.
Hope some of this inspires you to give the heel flap another try!

You all looked so amazing in your sweaters this past weekend! Loved looking through the photos. 😁 I'm almost done knitting the Raina Shawl for my sister. I picked it for your description of the ferns. While I'm not in NZ, the PNW has lots of ferns, too. And since we live far away from each other, I felt it was a good way for her to stay warm and feel closer to each other.

I have to say that this year, Rhinebeck was AMAZING! I went on Sunday, which is unusual for me. It was much quieter than what I have experienced when I go on the Saturday of the festival - and I really enjoyed that! Unfortunately, no meet ups, but I stood in line for apple cider donuts with GG (of ggmadeit) and talked about her beautiful orange duster. I talked to soooooo many people and saw soooo many sweaters (and so many versions of The Weekender, which was the sweater I was wearing) I didn't have money for yarn and it didn't matter. I just feel like I didn't truly realize how hungry my soul was for wooly people until it got so filled up from the day! Amazing day.

I did not know your every day socks were toe up with a fleegle heel, that's the only way I knit my socks. I'm gonna have to buy the pattern now. Good morning! I so enjoy listening to you on my walks on Friday morning!! Always so inspiring! I love your personality .. so real and a tad bit goofy which makes you so endearing and approachable!
I had a thought on the heel/flap. Kinda funny I’m offering you suggestions … LOL. I have a super large instep and a traditional heel/flap results in socks sliding off my heel. So, I knit a 2” heel flap before I turn the heel. I decrease every other row on the gusset but I’ve heard some so do every third row for a few rows to help with a large instep. Until I started knitting socks, my feet were what I’ve always said are my best asset. I have to love how knitting garments humbles you a tad!!!

I have a question about the big cozy cardi, the textured stitch pattern instructions on page 4 are different from the body instructions on page 5. Page 4 states row 1 (k3,p1) to last 3, k3, Row 2 (p3,k1) to last 3, p3. Row 4 (k1,p1,k2) to last 3, k1,p1,k1. Row4 (p1.,k1,,p2) to last 3 p1,k1,p1 and then on page 5 the body instructions say Row1 Sl 1 wyib, k1 (k3,p3) to 5st to end, k5. Row 2 Sl1 wyif p1,(p3,k3) to last 5st, p5. Row 3 Sl1 wyib k2,(p1,k3) to end. row 4 sl1 wyif p2, (k1,p3) to end. Which sent of instructions should be used? The textured stitch pattern on page 4 or the body instructions on page 5?

I twisted my Counting Sheep blanket and am in shock! In other words, there was a border knitted separately that got twisted after I finished the bottom and sides and started the top. Help! I am supposed to sew this around the middle rectangle but it is twisted! I don't want to ravel! Do I cut somewhere? I'm not doing all those sheep, moons and stars over! Do I cut it? I found some instructions on cutting. I also have to do a short vertical cut in a garter stitch border that is part of the twist. Can't find instructions for that.
