Activation day was a whirlwind for Deb as she was introduced to the world of sound after more than 10 years of struggling with hearing loss. Before going into the appointment, Deb read an email from another cochlear implant recipient saying that he didn't start hearing right away, but to be patient because his brain started figuring out words soon after.
When her cochlear implant was turned on, she heard sounds but not words. She remembered the email and it gave her comfort that she didn't hear words right away. After some more testing, she started hearing words but they didn't sound normal because her brain needed more training. Jim sounded like a robot, but she understood what he was saying!
When they got back to their house, Jim asked Deb to walk into the other room so they could test out her hearing on the phone. Deb thinks back to that moment, "Do you remember that? And you called me and the very first thing I ever heard on the phone was you saying, ‘I love you.’ That was the highlight."
I LOVED listening to you describing hearing again! You are so animated and such a treasure. :)
Thank you for this great comment, Sherry!
Awesome Deb! You were so instrumental in Jim getting his cochlear! Thank you!
We are glad Deb was able to help you and Jim!
I absolutely LOVE your energy, Deb! So exciting. I would love for this to be a reality for my husband. He doesn't want cochlears:( His hearing loss started in his 40s and he's 69 now.

@@CochlearAmericas Thank you so much for your reply and thanks for the info guide source:) It took 10 years just to convince my husband he needed to see an audiologist. I have quite the road ahead of me but I know that, ultimately, it will have to be his choice. Take care.
