      Yeah, they retooled the frog kit but they neglected the fact it is the British fleet air arm version of the avenger called the Tarpon

    Outstanding model, but just a friendly reminder that Avengers never truly fought in the Battle of Midway, TBD Devastators were the main torpedo bombers.

    • @SpruesNBrews
      @SpruesNBrews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Interestingly enough, six brand-new TBF Avengers of VT-6 (belonging to the USS Hornet) did participate in the battle. The commander of VT-6 had left select men behind on the East Coast to train on the new torpedo bomber when the task force sailed to the Pacific to launch the Doolittle Raid. The Avengers arrived at Pearl Harbor the day after the Hornet departed for Midway, and flew independently to the island to join the fight. All six Avengers flew in a mixed strike force with B-26s from Midway Island herself against the Japanese fleet on June 4th, resulting in all but one being shot down. One Avenger was able to launch her torpedo at the light cruiser Nagara, while two others were able to release their own fish against the carrier Hiryu. Unfortunately, the Japanese vessels were able to avoid these attacks. While the Devastators were in fact the primary torpedo bombers that participated in the Midway battle, the Avenger does deserve credit for one of her first forays into combat in the Pacific 👍

      The pilot of the surviving avenger Ens A Earnest went or to fight in the Solomons campaign Guadalcanal, I think with VT10? Ironically flew with George Gay the other surviving pilot of VT8.
      A bit on the lot. Sadly Academy continues to market this kit a a TBF1c. The bulging observation windows in the radio operator compartment were on the British version Avenger Mark 1 all or lll.
      Sword just released a real TBF1 which operated at Midway and throughout 1942 and into early 1943.

  • @patton610
    @patton610 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Those large windows are typically a British mod aft of the wing.

      @@SpruesNBrews im no expert on the aircraft but I think the kit is actually an older one that might not have necessarily been american based. Heard really good things about the accurate minatures/academy kit. I built this a bit back as my covid fueled return to the hobby. Only later did I realize that the window was not in any usn photos. Ah well.

    The plane looks great, but TB Squadron 8 was completely wiped out. The only survivor of TB-8 was Ens. George Gay. Plus TB-8 flew the TBD Devastator. The TBF was used at the Battle of Midway but came from Midway itself.

    • @SpruesNBrews
      @SpruesNBrews  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! The six TBFs that flew from Midway were actually part of VT-8, and it makes for an interesting story! Apparently the Avengers weren't ready in time to sail with the Hornet & the rest of VT-8, so they had a small detachment stay back with the planes with plans to meet up with the rest of the battle group later. The new TBFs were at Midway Island when the battle started, so they flew out with a small flight of B-26s to join the fray. This particular aircraft I built was the only surviving TBF of that island-based detachment of VT-8 - it was piloted by Ensign Albert Earnest & was shipped back to the states after the battle for examination of her survival characteristics. There are some great shots available of the plane on Midway on June 25th before they sent her home.
