I think what made this ninja movie so epic is the number of never before seen weapons that were introduced throughout the film. It was like the ultimate introduction to ninjutsu. Other ninja movies mainly focused on swordplay and show one or two unusual types of weapons. Mostly shuriken, blinding powders, sai, or kusarigama. But this had so much firsts appearances.
    1. The the marbles with the tetsubishi.
    2. Koppojustu (bone breaking techniques )
    3. The sword with the hidden knife in the handle.
    4. The blowgun with poison darts
    5. Rope ladders
    6. The spikes that he spits from his mouth.
    7. The mini flamethrower
    8. Even the hidden compartment th silver masked ninja used to hold his lock picks
It’s always been rare to see so many ninjutsu techniques in one film and that’s why this is one of the best ninja movies ever.

As a kid, this movie and all Kosugi movies were amazing. I thought of him as this mythological Ninjutsu practitioner. Reality hit as adult as I grew up as Kosugi fans. He never practiced Ninjutsu nor was he trained in it. He was a Shotokan Karate blackbelt from Japan who was hired to mimic as a Ninja. His stunt double Steven Lambert has written an amazing book who doubled for Kosugi in dangerous stunts as well as all of the gymnastics and acrobatics that Kosugi did not know how to perform

It's a classic movie for sure. Sho Kosugi did a lot of good "fight movies" work and could be a surprisingly decent actor as well.

All I wanted when the talk of the live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie was going to happen, was to see Sho Kosugu as the Shredder. The reason besides the fact that his success as a ninja star in these films made the genre popular, was the fact that everytime I re-read the first run of books, I heard Kosugi's voice in my head everytime the Shredder spoke. It should have been him, and I felt completely justified in this sentiment when I went to see Ninja Assassin in theaters. He ESSENTIALLY WAS the Shredder in that movie.

Most verified information points to him being a Karate champion and also practicing other martial arts like Kendo. In the interviews with him he doesn't mention formal Ninjutsu training, instead after he moved to Los Angeles at aged 19 to go to college, he eventually found work doing stunts in a Ninja movie and the rest is history. He never had a formal background in Ninjutsu.

Most of sword coreographis fell into a luttle mistake we call "signalizing". Means that you quickly shows to the other stunt/actor the next movie like a parrying etc. This one is so good you see no signalizing, also the speed is amazing and it really looks like a sword fight with ninjato.

He actually wrote the first drafts of that film but then the studio got involved and made a bunch of changes and Hollywood it up.
I bet his pure vision for the return of the ninja to current cinema would've been epic and even better

Сколько из-за этого фильмы было унитожено "раскладушек", трубки от которых шли на мечи, сколько "суриков" было взорвано под ногами, и сколько "звездочек-ниньдзя" было выточенно на уроках труда....😂
