I made thin wood shelves with holes that I stuck in. I cut the pegs long enough to put a couple matching bobbins on top! I love it. It's nice looking too.
This looks great! I did something similar with my thread and it has helped me tremendously to keep things more organized! I tried to have my thread out on one of those fancy wooden pegboard things. It got dusty and looked cluttered. The great way about this method, is as you overflow, you just buy another container! Hope you have been able to be more organized with your new method!
When you get a poorly wound bobbin, simply place it on the spool pin and either use it as your top thread, or wind it correctly onto a new bobbin. No waste.
Very nice! I have sorted my threads out in flat boxes, grouping the reds/pinks/oranges, blues/violets, greens, yellows together. That helps me a lot. I bought a couple of cases for storing only bobbins and use those. For the serger threads, I have allocated one of the 4-bin drawers for them. This is how I cleaned up my messy thread collection! I have some serger thread in odd colors that came with one of my sergers. I was gonna toss them but your idea of turning them into bobbin threads has given me some ideas! Thanks so much!
I created a cabinet using spice racks that are intended to be used when new cabinets are installed in kitchens. They come in 3 inch and 6 inch widths, so I have the storage for all sizes.
The thread you are taking off your bobbins cut it up into 2" to 4" pieces and throw under trees so the birds can add it to their nests. Also cut it up if throwing it in the trash in case it ends up where an animal can get caught up in it.
Thanks for the tip on how to corral the end of the thread when there is no groove in the top of the spool. I never thought of that clever method of pulling the thread tight against the edge to keep the ends under control. 👍
I separate the colors into ziploc baggies---all greens in one, blues in another, etc. and then just put the baggies into my sewing cabinet drawers. To save extra thread left on bobbins, I will take an empty thread spool, and wind the extra thread onto it. Each empty spool can accommodate 4 or 5 windings of thread, and it keeps it all tidy, and frees up more bobbins for use.
I keep my threads in different boxes and bags and I have a ton of it. It's a mess. But I also have pretty small spools and bought several of them in the thrift shop or online second hand or the flea market. I smiled when you emptied your bobbins and throw Out the big spools with lots thread on in because I use every spool until the very end. If the piece left is long enough for hand sewing I even keep those 50cm and use them the next time when the color fits 😂 Yeah, this is how I learned it from my mum. 👍🏻
Yes exactly, so we are on the same page. 😉 Due to known reasons there are no flea markets at the moment and I really miss them. And also thrift Shops are not open here, but luckily I got a looooot of thread before the pandemic 😂 Now I know why 😂 You should always be prepared for pandemic and lockdown 🤪
I use the plastic boxes like you have but lay them on their side, and I can see the colors without taking any out or lifting them to see what colors there are. I used the label maker and put the colors on the end of the box.
bobbins have a place in my sewing table. There are probably 20 spindles for them to sit on. When I have bobbins with multiple shades of a color, I stack the like colors on a spindle. That piece lifts out and I store empty bobbins there. I have multiple "Thread Beds" hanging on my sewing room wall. Spools of thread are stored there, sorted by color. Serger thread sit on homemade shelved with dowels to hold the cones. This is also arranged by color. White at one end, black at the other & a rainbow of shades in between. I don't usually buy extra thread because I've lost a spool but I do pick up multiples of favorite colors when I find sale prices. I used to keep my cones lined up on the window sill & several of the plastic cones disintegrated from the sun light. I think that may have been what happened to yours crushed spool. Thread & notions are not my problem I definatly buy fabric faster than I stitch it up.
I like to go fishing with hubby. I use plastic containers for fishing lures found in the Sporting goods department at local stores. Very handy. Keeps dust away! 🎣
I use a rubber circle “Bobbin Saver” for all my bobbins. It holds about 35 bobbins. In the hole in the centre I put any spools of thread I am currently working on, if I have to switch colours frequently. I have a wooden “June Tailor “ spool holder on the wall for most of my spools. Mine holds about 60 spools. (They come in different sizes). Cones I keep in a clear plastic tote.
I have wood shelf I bought at Hobby Lobby to keep my serger thread ,it hangs on wall in closet I found they fit better if you invert every other spool ( this helps me ) keep all one color spools together , my bobbins are kept in a smaller box ( similar to yours ) I do separate by colors , put dividers to keep from tangling, my regular spools are kept in another container, I found out if you lie down I can find color I need faster than , going thru 100 spools , my container has a caddy where I keep smaller spools ! I was at a store where they were selling displays etc , I found some small wooden racks with 2 rows of dowels , light flashed , I bought 3-4 for 50 cents apiece , these are ( or at least one) on my sewing table to hold serger spools after I finish sewing gets transferred to my hanging wooden rack , my regular spools don’t fit , but I might get handy , remove dowels , get smaller ones to insert in a rack , I don’t like to have my bobbins in a mess , I do unwrap bits of thread but do rewind on cardboards I collect , & do use to sew on buttons , hems etc usually while sitting on my recliner ! When I saw you sliding thread on spool , there are times it won’t slide in precut slit , so I get my utility knife ( very cautiously) will make another slit !
I have close to 500 spools of thread. I store it in 6 drawer Bisley cabinets. Each drawer fits 40 spools. I use prewound bobbins, so they stay organized in the box they come in, and fit in a Bisley drawer too. I don't like that you can't see your thread colors, but I don't have to deal with it.
Bobbins that were wound unevenly can be used in place of the spool thread on top to use it up on small projects. My machine has upright thread pin so this works fine for me.
I have 2 bobbin cases that each hold 28 bobbins in foam recesses whether the are wound or empty. They lay on their sides so I can easily see the colors. My smaller thread spools (non-cone type) are color grouped on peg-type thread holders that are hanging on the wall near my sewing machines. My serger (cone-type) threads are laying on their sides, so I can quickly see the colors, in shoebox-sized plastic drawers. I can slide open the drawer and easily see the colors. The are also color grouped. I like to spend more time sewing and less time searching.
I have some of my thread organized. I have a pegboard that I have some of my embroidery threads on. I also have a couple thread racks with the common colors I use. I also have a thread cone rack for my serger thread. I also have a tote and a cardboard box with the thread that I can't get on the racks. So the thread is tangled up real bad. I also buy thread when it's on sale, because I can't remember what colors I have. So I will try your method.

Everything is in either on my thread holder or on the most awesome bobbin holder I bought on Wish. And since it's all on my crafting table, I can see my threads and can decide if I need more thread or not. Bingo!!!! Also: I put the thread away, too!!!
I use an exact knife and make my own slit in the endcap of the spools. Then, I take a marker and color the slit. That way I don’t have to hunt for it, since I have trouble seeing things like that.
I have a 3 drawer roll around unit. The top two drawers have thread in them. My server thread in the second drawer, and smaller spools ans case of bobbin threads in the first drawer.
I keep a spool of thread with the matching filled bobbin in a snack bag in each color then place all of the bags in a wicker basket next to my sewing machine.

I use similar bins like yours, however, my thread lies on the side so I can see the color without opening. II pull my thread and bobbins tight to lock the thread. All bobbins are in a bobbin container.
My sewing room is more than a sewing. I'm a crafter, I crochet, cross stitch, macrame project. I call my crafting room. I do my best to put thread back and macrame cord back. Yarn not so much.

I could never find the bobbin thread that matched spool thread when needed. I eventually bought spool racks and use drinking straws cut down to lengthen the dowel so it will fit both the spool and bobbin. Works great! The thread is layered on the racks by color, making it easy to find the right color quickly. The only issue is straw size. Some brands fit over the dowel perfectly and through the bobbin, and other brands don't. Sometimes the hole in the bobbin is a bit smaller than the straw. From one box of 100 straws, you can get at least 200 pieces, which should be plenty for any seamstress. The lose thread ends don't tend to be a problem since the bobbins fit snugly on the straw pieces. My big serger spools don't fit on the racks, so they are put away in a plastic bin.
If you don't put you tools away as you go and just replace everything you can't find, you will end up on a hoarder show. If you also can't throw anything away because "someday you might need that" ditto.

(I have to put everything away where I found it when I’m done. My sewing room cannot be a mess when I go to bed at night. Just like when I was a kid I’d have my toys picked up before bedtime lol
Clear floating shelves are nice that way there’s no strings hanging. Some people like to use the spindles that they hang on the wall but the strings hanging like that and it drives me insane
I have racks and a shelf. I put the thread from the serger away immediately. When I get 3-4 small spools and bobbins I put them away.

I have a great container that can hold numerous threads, found it a Joanns. For my bobbins, found a special container just for bobbins, at Walmart.

I store my treads in clear plastic shoe boxes with lids by color. So in the blue box I have spools, cones, and specialty threads.

All my thread and bobbins fit into an old biscuit tin. Not pretty, but it works for me 😀😀😀

I have a peg board on the wall above my sewing machine to keep my thread on. Used some dowels cut to size to fill the holes and put the thread on.

I use leftover bobbin thread to piece leftover batting. Color doesn't matter. One bobbin up top, one in the bobbin case.

Husqvarna Viking Epic 980q or newer model have huge throat area.
We call them long arm sewing machines in Oz. I have a Husqvarna but it's an expensive model. Don't know of any cheaper brands that have long arm. 🙋😂🙏

So when I have a bobbin that isn’t wound tight and even I put it on my spool spindle and I wind it correctly onto another bobbin. I never waste it.
