It is 100% Ubisoft's responsibility to balance out the characters. Meta will exist no matter what (it stands for Most Effective Tactic Available after all) and you can't force anyone to not pick a character. It's not about making every hero equal. It's about closing the gaps between underpowered and overpowered. People pay to play this game and its heroes, and it is 100% their rights to pick whoever they want to play. Ubi has the power to make this game enjoyable for people who don't want to play the same 3-4 heroes, and we're still waiting on that.
It really does frustrate when me when I play my comfort pick (kensei) in dominion only to come up against a monk, VG, or afeera for example. Only for them to stare at me with a char with much better offense and/or defense just for them to parry one light or heavy and then I'm put in an infinite mix that can delete my health in a matter of two or three clicks of a button... monkey has unpunishable bashes and heavy whiffs, he too safe. the female cuman has crushing counter on both opener and chain light, so you can light spam even in ganks and not have to gaf, also for some reason her follow up isbreally fast and often unreactable for me as a ps4 user. and egypt girl just has neutral bash, dodge bash, whiff bash, chain bash, she fucking can throw a bash literally every other button imput, and it pisses me off cause if you get hit by one, it garantees three.
The curse of easy heroes is that the players get lazy when they don't have to work hard for it. If you get good, Kensei can smash Shaolin with much higher damage, good hyper armor trades, and big punishes on Shaolin's combos that rely heavily on light attacks. Also, regarding Afeera, Kensei can deflect her undodgeable attacks and do 34 damage wallsplat punishes on a successful dodge against her kick. Knowing what heroes do is more important than picking the "best" one.

personally i wouldve gone with hito instead of shinobi since you are talking only about dom but shinobi was still an understandable "meta" pick as well
Hito after nerfs is total garbage. No opener, no neutral bash, assasin class hp (wtf is 125), fully punishable charged heavy + lvl 1,2,3 bashes, low damage, low punish damage, cant exchange hits with hyper armor (cuz 22 damage + 125 hp = lose every hit exchange), if enemy can react to variable time throw heavy = insta gg Ans there's more and more problems with hito, but people will still complain because of how strong skill issue they have vs hito.
Hiro, even after the nerfs, is still one of the most oppressive characters in the game. Getting ganked by two hitokiris is probably the worst thing that can happen to you. That said, I think Shaolin and Afeera should've gotten at least an honorable mention.
@@jasonvoorhes1395 keep in mind this is talking about a 4v4 scenario where most likely you will be fighting Hitos in ganks or team fights since hito in duels is not the best for the reasons you described. In these scenarios Hito has an infinite variably timed heavy chain with good distance that can be feinted at any point between the level 1-3 bash with great unblockable hitboxes. She has lower than average damage heavies because her entire mixup is just constant heavys with feints and bashes thrown in between. Even an ok hito that understands the variable timings and such can absolutely dominate in a team fight or gank scenario especially if they just spam unblockable feints to fuck your indicators.
Theres no such thing as "best character" in for honor, you find a guy you like based off of vibes and master them, me personally I'm a sohei, it feels like a low-key kensei evolution.
0:48 lawdaddy is obviously an S++ tier based on vibes alone (although his moveset could be better ig) but Shinobi being in the "need buff" tier isnt saying hes bad, its clearly just a Shinobi main wanting a one button combo that activates a 30 second long cutscene that deals 60 damage.
I like stomping meta players with bad characters but them there is just some things you cant outskill people like pirate infinite external dodge attacks or confirmed ganks.
While yes these hero’s kits are frustrating to deal with I always feel genuine skill really trumps all. I’ve gotten shitstomped by “bad” heroes and equally trashed meta picks. I think meta really just means how easy a character is to play
No meta doesn't matter, but it will define how shitty your match will be and how much you will be punished for playing a character you like instead of a meta oriented one.
Playing Nobushi is a complete pain. It feels very dirty when you fight people who are not able to parry, yet it feels like she's near useless when facing a team with people who can actually parry or even block her light consistently

I find it's more so what meta you're facing (or the lack thereof) and whether or not you're also participating. I prefer to play non-meta or partial meta characters and I still have just as much personal success, if not traditional success. Of course, a fun yet bad character is going to struggle against a meta character or a cheese character, but there are certain things you can do.
I noticed this when i got the "10 takedowns with assassin" order and since i didnt play assassins i picked sshinobi and completed this in 1 or 2 games where with my main it would have taken at least twice as long.
3 reps into Medjay currently, I will say the “meta” picks completely counter most of his offense. VG by virtue of existence, pirate with pistol blast, bp by also just existing, etc. It’s not impossible, but there’s moments where I legit can’t agress these picks just because their defense is offensive and vice versa. Or maybe I’m just bad, who knows. Either way, nice video, hawk tuah tier list when?
The fun part leaves me a bit iffy. I mean... it's not really much a matter of meta wins then playstyle. The fun really comes down to if you like playing with the kit you are given, and how you use it. A big reason why I don't get the complaints around LB rework is that, besides the shitty roll-catcher that is basically a lazy addition, the "dodge bash braindead" feels more like a player problem than anything. it's like with every fighting game like DB Sparking Zero or Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat... People not only people just play with the meta (which the devs need to work on through balancing), and use only meta tactics. Especially since LB isn't really limited in his combos, movesets, etc Like, on that, people just need to actually try and play him by actually interracting with the moveset. Similarly, and I'll play a bit of the devil's advocate, but I find it harder and more engaging to play VG in the less braindead fashion. Like, use her other All-guard counters (zone and light), actually try and make reads, not abuse the CC. On that, I feel like the devs still need to balance and rework her kit to make it more engaging and less easy to manipulate and win with, but people also gotta realize that there are other ways to enjoy a fighting game than just "playing meta and optimized moveset" Like, we can bash the devs all we want about balancing (rightfully so btw, they do make stupid decisions sometimes), but at one point, we also gotta aknowledge that we as a community aren't doing ourselves any favor by preventing ourselves to have fun and play another game style besides "optimized gamplay"
Yeah. The only thing I wanna see Ubisoft do to Lawbringer and Conqueror is revert them to before their most recent "reworks". Lawbringer has lost so much skill he required to get any value, people made it seem so complicated as to why Lawbringer "Had no offense" or why "his bash is so slow". And Conq... good lord, the identity crisis he went through before the Devs just decided to pull the plug on his life support...

In every game when it comes to balance and competitive… meta matters. Meta is a good way for devs to balance. It tells them how the games is going and what to nerf. Otherwise. What matters is fun and comfort.
Solid Video mate. I'd argue another thing to consider is skill level when it comes to discussing the importance of Meta. If you are better than your opponent, matchup doesn't matter, even at comp level (Uncle ReV beat Deerbra's tiandi before the Highlander rework, post tiandi rework lmao) There is no matchup in which you can't win. (Obviously they become harder, but never impossible. It's a fighting game, skill trumps character.) If there is a large enough skill gap between opponents, hero picks don't matter. This applies more in 1s but applies in all modes For example: 4 mm shitters could play the most meta stack possible (VG, Pirate, Shaolin, Afeera), for example. They'd still lose at least 9/10 times to a high level stack on shit tier chars (Shaman, Nux, Musha, Valk), for example due to the skill difference in players. In summary. I do agree with you raptor, meta is easier. That's why theyre meta. But at the end of the day, its a game, and we should all strive to have more fun on it, whatever that may be to you.
Before watching the video, I think the meta topic depends entirely on the individual player, if you have fun purely from winning but aren't very good/can't improve easily, then meta characters are necessary for you to enjoy the game. But if you don't care whether you win or lose, then it depends on how well you can play yourself and how quickly you can get frustrated. Ultimately I think the problem isn't with meta characters but the community itself, preferring to scream and kick rather than sit back and take a deep breath. Of course I am aware that's not the entire community, might be a loud enough minority that overshadows the rest of you guys.
Characters can be good, people are usually not, just because you pick meta doesn’t mean you’re actually any good, spam will only get you so far, however people pay good money for the game they can play whatever characters they want, I’m pretty sure I’ve heard “X character is overpowered” for everyone on the roster at this point
Im mid at every hero, thats how it is. If you're the average play, whatever makes you the most confident or the most comfortable ones, doesn't really matter. Variety is KING. If you stay stuck at just one hero, you'll just end up complaining about every hero who counters yours
I've played for honor since the very beginning and when shinobi came out he was garbage but I fell in love with the character anyways. I recently started playing again after about 3 years and once again I use shinobi. His move set is definitely different but it was news to me that he was considered OP. I thought it just still had the sauce
I have an idea for a video/ series. You call it "for noobs" For example warden for noobs. Short said you go over a hero and how they play and their moves. And u rank them on how hard or easy they are for noobs. This is an idea from a different TH-camr but you could add your own spin to it. And I think it could work with for honor.

I'm not really a high ranking player, so my opponents are sometimes close to my level hence why it became my guilty pleasure that whenever I get frustrated on my BP grind I go a game of LB where if my opponent is sorta my level or lower I give in to my guilty pleasure and just light>bash>light>bash... them as long as I have stamina. It is weirdly therapeutic for me because it feels like I get to slap someone and let my frustration out like "That's for confirm ganking me 12 times! That's for playing pirate! That's for stacking 3 Warmongers into the enemy comp! That's for my self-abuse for playing For Honor for 3 hours again! That's for having to play against Pirate again!" It's definitely not healthy and really fucking toxic, hence why it is a guilty pleasure to me. I know I deserve the shit I get for playing BP, but in my defense I made it my mission to never use Oath Breaker ever on him.
Honestly, just the movements and cancels that this game has are the big reason I stick to the Bot modes. I do not have the patience to learn all that stuff, I just want to bonk with my Kanabo and do my funny backbreaker XD
short answer: kinda? yes, some heros are better than others and you will have an easier time with. That pirate game is a great example, cause it would have been a chore otherwise just getting through the match, let alone winning. But then you have games like the warden match where you clearly put in the time to learn your characers tricks and he...well maybe he was having an off match, but regardless you demonstated the skill ceiling quite well. I do think that, yes, it does matter, but its not a hard yes.

I play conq. He's the most fun hero in the game, even while loosing. He's also one of the worst heroes in the game, and one of the scariest if you know how to play him correctly.
I play Warden, Warmonger, and Shugoki. Comfortable and rather casual to use, no brain and little mixs up where I try shit and react. Honestly only played Knights, you have tips for Lawbringer? Because I'm curious to play him
I can deal with pirate & shinobi but Bro Vg is just dumb broken the bots will just light spam & in the right hands stg it’s almost impossible to get a hit off bc how good her recovery’s are
most my characters are between 50-60% winrate and i play about everyone. ofc there have been characters that break the game like pre nerf hito (74% winrate im sorry) but other than that they all are about the same. for reference i play in lobbies vs reps 200 and up so basically the norm

I never could understand how people really enjoy abusing the bs heroes, like you say most people just got off work and want to (Attempt) to chill but end up playing against hitos pirates shinobis and all the lame heroes. I wish everyone could ban one hero at the start of each dom match, more or less wish people just weren't a**holes and felt the need to destroy a pretty cool game, its got plenty of flaws yes but its truly a one of a kind masterpiece. Yes yes it does,because again, a kyoshin in a embasills hands is still nightmarish to at least 60% of the player population...put that in a somewhat competent players hand now we are looking at 85...put it in some one solid and competent we are looking at 90...now hand it to someone who is just goated and every one gets faded, the number 1 kyo literally has ran every number 1's fade in the game. I used to be amongst the best before i set the game down, grand master 67, 72, and 80...former mlg comp teams, 10x over all master placement...and i can say competently as a goki non the less i had a way easier time using busted meta heros, then goki...in fact my kd when way higheer with them, it I was a far more imposing presence...and I didn't even have to sweat as hard as i would with goki or any lower tier character. So yes, it matters greatly unless your using scripts which is also extremely common across the game, always one guy every 3 or 4 games that no matter what never falls for feints, perrys every neutral light...and perfectly os every os able attack

That isnt true, bcs if you're good enough you're fighting equivalent enemies. It doesn't really matter for a casual, but for high elo or comp, you will lose playing certain heroes.

I need to get more heros though since the only hero i have are the base game ones. beside VG ofc, I cant choose if i wanna try highlander or Gladiator first though was also looking at Shaman she looks neat
coming from me i despise VG, i think shes just a hero anyone can be good at by putting no effort into her. but im also one of the only people that can say, you shouldnt feel bad for playing a hero you like. This game has never been competitive to me. I could never stick to one hero in this game, always ended up going random. And even with meta heros i never try hard tho i honestly prefer the non meta heros. I'll pick kensi over pirate and pk over shinoby. The game has gone from brainded turtling to lightspam and now we truly in heby on red.

At the end of the day heroes make things easier, but they dont win the lobbies. Stacking team does. If a team of soloq's go up against a stack, 9,5/10 cases, the stack wins. Even if they are very mid players. If both teams are stacked then, again, heroes help but only so far. Then it comes down to player skill level. Like if your stack were to play against the ppl i usually play with, we could beat your full meta hero team with pretty mid heroes, simply by just utilizing our heroes and rotations better. What im trying to say is it be better to make a vid about soloq experience vs stacked experience
I'll say it I play varangian because I'm trash at parrying also my reaction time is horrible. But I do find her boring as hell especially her executions. Best hero is kensei not gonna lie
Honestly my only problem with winning in dominion is the goddamn points. I saear to get the enemy team take one zone after we have held 3 for the majority of the game and nah they win. Obviously there are time where i do straight get my ass beat but id say 70 percent of my losses are just to points because either 2 teammates run to the same 4vs2 and lose and then the other reason being that it feels like the enemy team just get more points for the same stuff.😂
Also on that point of the "people won't play against you if you and your team have picked meta" dude it couldn't be more true, the amount that I will see 2 hito, an afeera and a pirate and I will just straight dc. I'm not even wasting my time on that

VG by virtue of existence, pirate with pistol blast, bp by also just existing, etc. It’s not impossible, but there’s moments where I legit can’t agress these picks just because their defense is offensive and vice versa. Or maybe I’m just bad, who knows. Either way, nice video, hawk tuah tier list when?
The fun part leaves me a bit iffy. I mean... it's not really much a matter of meta wins then playstyle. The fun really comes down to if you like playing with the kit you are given, and how you use it.
A big reason why I don't get the complaints around LB rework is that, besides the shitty roll-catcher that is basically a lazy addition, the "dodge bash braindead" feels more like a player problem than anything. it's like with every fighting game like DB Sparking Zero or Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat... People not only people just play with the meta (which the devs need to work on through balancing), and use only meta tactics. Especially since LB isn't really limited in his combos, movesets, etc
Like, on that, people just need to actually try and play him by actually interracting with the moveset.
Similarly, and I'll play a bit of the devil's advocate, but I find it harder and more engaging to play VG in the less braindead fashion. Like, use her other All-guard counters (zone and light), actually try and make reads, not abuse the CC. On that, I feel like the devs still need to balance and rework her kit to make it more engaging and less easy to manipulate and win with, but people also gotta realize that there are other ways to enjoy a fighting game than just "playing meta and optimized moveset"
Like, we can bash the devs all we want about balancing (rightfully so btw, they do make stupid decisions sometimes), but at one point, we also gotta aknowledge that we as a community aren't doing ourselves any favor by preventing ourselves to have fun and play another game style besides "optimized gamplay"
Gotta have to agree about vg, like she's definitely overtuned and it really wouldn't need much to bring her back inline
I will always play Law, Warden, Cent and Conq because those will always be my favourite heros.

Yeah. The only thing I wanna see Ubisoft do to Lawbringer and Conqueror is revert them to before their most recent "reworks". Lawbringer has lost so much skill he required to get any value, people made it seem so complicated as to why Lawbringer "Had no offense" or why "his bash is so slow". And Conq... good lord, the identity crisis he went through before the Devs just decided to pull the plug on his life support...

In every game when it comes to balance and competitive… meta matters.
Meta is a good way for devs to balance. It tells them how the games is going and what to nerf.

I'd argue another thing to consider is skill level when it comes to discussing the importance of Meta. If you are better than your opponent, matchup doesn't matter, even at comp level (Uncle ReV beat Deerbra's tiandi before the Highlander rework, post tiandi rework lmao) There is no matchup in which you can't win. (Obviously they become harder, but never impossible. It's a fighting game, skill trumps character.)
If there is a large enough skill gap between opponents, hero picks don't matter.
This applies more in 1s but applies in all modes
For example: 4 mm shitters could play the most meta stack possible (VG, Pirate, Shaolin, Afeera), for example. They'd still lose at least 9/10 times to a high level stack on shit tier chars (Shaman, Nux, Musha, Valk), for example due to the skill difference in players.
In summary.
I do agree with you raptor, meta is easier. That's why theyre meta. But at the end of the day, its a game, and we should all strive to have more fun on it, whatever that may be to you.
Before watching the video, I think the meta topic depends entirely on the individual player, if you have fun purely from winning but aren't very good/can't improve easily, then meta characters are necessary for you to enjoy the game.
But if you don't care whether you win or lose, then it depends on how well you can play yourself and how quickly you can get frustrated. Ultimately I think the problem isn't with meta characters but the community itself, preferring to scream and kick rather than sit back and take a deep breath. Of course I am aware that's not the entire community, might be a loud enough minority that overshadows the rest of you guys.
Characters can be good, people are usually not, just because you pick meta doesn’t mean you’re actually any good, spam will only get you so far, however people pay good money for the game they can play whatever characters they want, I’m pretty sure I’ve heard “X character is overpowered” for everyone on the roster at this point

If you're the average play, whatever makes you the most confident or the most comfortable ones, doesn't really matter. Variety is KING. If you stay stuck at just one hero, you'll just end up complaining about every hero who counters yours
I've played for honor since the very beginning and when shinobi came out he was garbage but I fell in love with the character anyways. I recently started playing again after about 3 years and once again I use shinobi. His move set is definitely different but it was news to me that he was considered OP. I thought it just still had the sauce
I have an idea for a video/ series. You call it "for noobs" For example warden for noobs. Short said you go over a hero and how they play and their moves. And u rank them on how hard or easy they are for noobs. This is an idea from a different TH-camr but you could add your own spin to it. And I think it could work with for honor.

I'm not really a high ranking player, so my opponents are sometimes close to my level hence why it became my guilty pleasure that whenever I get frustrated on my BP grind I go a game of LB where if my opponent is sorta my level or lower I give in to my guilty pleasure and just light>bash>light>bash... them as long as I have stamina. It is weirdly therapeutic for me because it feels like I get to slap someone and let my frustration out like "That's for confirm ganking me 12 times! That's for playing pirate! That's for stacking 3 Warmongers into the enemy comp! That's for my self-abuse for playing For Honor for 3 hours again! That's for having to play against Pirate again!" It's definitely not healthy and really fucking toxic, hence why it is a guilty pleasure to me. I know I deserve the shit I get for playing BP, but in my defense I made it my mission to never use Oath Breaker ever on him.
Honestly, just the movements and cancels that this game has are the big reason I stick to the Bot modes. I do not have the patience to learn all that stuff, I just want to bonk with my Kanabo and do my funny backbreaker XD
Honestly, casual play isn’t really a thing in FH, they even add 15 mins penalty in the game what that simply tells you
short answer: kinda? yes, some heros are better than others and you will have an easier time with. That pirate game is a great example, cause it would have been a chore otherwise just getting through the match, let alone winning. But then you have games like the warden match where you clearly put in the time to learn your characers tricks and he...well maybe he was having an off match, but regardless you demonstated the skill ceiling quite well.
I do think that, yes, it does matter, but its not a hard yes.

I play conq. He's the most fun hero in the game, even while loosing. He's also one of the worst heroes in the game, and one of the scariest if you know how to play him correctly.
I play Warden, Warmonger, and Shugoki. Comfortable and rather casual to use, no brain and little mixs up where I try shit and react.

I never could understand how people really enjoy abusing the bs heroes, like you say most people just got off work and want to (Attempt) to chill but end up playing against hitos pirates shinobis and all the lame heroes. I wish everyone could ban one hero at the start of each dom match, more or less wish people just weren't a**holes and felt the need to destroy a pretty cool game, its got plenty of flaws yes but its truly a one of a kind masterpiece. After my 10 hour shifts FH is somehow still my comfort game and id love for it to stay that way but honestly the passion is slowly leaving, i can only take so many 4 stacks of confirm gainks. I fail to see the fun in it unless theyre just the type of people who do nothing but play games all day and get bored so they turn to making the time un-enjoyable for others... sad

Yes yes it does,because again, a kyoshin in a embasills hands is still nightmarish to at least 60% of the player population...put that in a somewhat competent players hand now we are looking at 85...put it in some one solid and competent we are looking at 90...now hand it to someone who is just goated and every one gets faded, the number 1 kyo literally has ran every number 1's fade in the game.
I used to be amongst the best before i set the game down, grand master 67, 72, and 80...former mlg comp teams, 10x over all master placement...and i can say competently as a goki non the less i had a way easier time using busted meta heros, then goki...in fact my kd when way higheer with them, it I was a far more imposing presence...and I didn't even have to sweat as hard as i would with goki or any lower tier character.
So yes, it matters greatly unless your using scripts which is also extremely common across the game, always one guy every 3 or 4 games that no matter what never falls for feints, perrys every neutral light...and perfectly os every os able attack

That isnt true, bcs if you're good enough you're fighting equivalent enemies. It doesn't really matter for a casual, but for high elo or comp, you will lose playing certain heroes.

Man. Seeing all the videos about how "easy" VG is makes me feel bad for playing her. As a returning player i really just thought her weapons was cool. I need to get more heros though since the only hero i have are the base game ones. beside VG ofc, I cant choose if i wanna try highlander or Gladiator first though was also looking at Shaman she looks neat
coming from me i despise VG, i think shes just a hero anyone can be good at by putting no effort into her. but im also one of the only people that can say, you shouldnt feel bad for playing a hero you like. YOU bought the game and YOU get to decide who you want to enjoy and play. unless someone else bought you the game then they cant tell you how to play it

This game has never been competitive to me. I could never stick to one hero in this game, always ended up going random. And even with meta heros i never try hard tho i honestly prefer the non meta heros. I'll pick kensi over pirate and pk over shinoby. The game has gone from brainded turtling to lightspam and now we truly in heby on red.

At the end of the day heroes make things easier, but they dont win the lobbies. Stacking team does.
If a team of soloq's go up against a stack, 9,5/10 cases, the stack wins. Even if they are very mid players. If both teams are stacked then, again, heroes help but only so far. Then it comes down to player skill level. Like if your stack were to play against the ppl i usually play with, we could beat your full meta hero team with pretty mid heroes, simply by just utilizing our heroes and rotations better.

Honestly my only problem with winning in dominion is the goddamn points. I saear to get the enemy team take one zone after we have held 3 for the majority of the game and nah they win. Obviously there are time where i do straight get my ass beat but id say 70 percent of my losses are just to points because either 2 teammates run to the same 4vs2 and lose and then the other reason being that it feels like the enemy team just get more points for the same stuff.😂
Also on that point of the "people won't play against you if you and your team have picked meta" dude it couldn't be more true, the amount that I will see 2 hito, an afeera and a pirate and I will just straight dc. I'm not even wasting my time on that
