I did the 150 and it was incredibly hard. The technical sections, the potholes, the washboard bumps, most of all the unending flatness meant you could never come up out of the saddle or even sit up tall without causing a bunch of drag. I was honestly begging for some climbs! Ended up getting a prescription strength ibuprofen from the aid station because of how bad my back was hurting, lol.
So proud of you DJ!! And the whole #flowformulasfamily. Such a great time hanging with everyone at the beach! Next stop, Sea Otter! 🤟🏼 (I promise to turn the GoPro on next time 😬.)
I did the 100 and was great to see you out there. I used your plan on Training Peaks to get ready and it was an excellent set of workouts. Congrats on the finish, the analysis and the inspiration.
Your videos about your races are really entertaining! I know they cost a lot of time to make, but I would love to see more of them because I really, really like them - and your videos in general.
I feel so grateful that you continue to choose to share your experiences and knowledge here. I learn heaps of knowledge from all your videos, and they only just keep getting better! This fellow Tar Heel thanks you!
Hey Dylan, what about doing a video on the physiology of Fatigue - what is it? What is fatigue resistance, why can't we just ride forever, why do we get tired, and how to train it? Love your channel man, great information and very fun
Dylan, yourself, Stephen Seiler and Peak Torque for training... LR,GCN and a bit of "The Move" for race commentary. You are a class act. Thank you for the content.
That must have been an incredibly hard ride. I did the same distance on tarmac at a relaxed pace at the weekend and was absolutely broken at the end. The same but at race pace on poor surfaces is unimaginable.
As always the analysis and breakdown are fantastic. Way to go on that effort, phenomenal to be competing at that level with that result. Can't wait to see what the future has in store for you!
Thanks so much and congrats, Dylan. I've been anxiously checking every day for your review. I love to see race analysis of what was happening at the front! I did luck out and turned my gopro on in time to get a snippet of the lead group of six as they flew past me going the other way! Was def not racing due to my lack of fitness but did complete ~290mi in three days - a personal best for distance and time. fwiw - "Raced" on IRC Serac CX 32 (I'm small) and bikepacked on the PFP 42s - no issues on either. Working alone in the wind definitely made me appreciate the narrow tires and aero bars.
Thank you thank you thank you - sooo great to see one of your top quality race reports again! And you do NOT disapoint! Incredible insight forbus to understand the effort needed to be in the front group. My son is a full time road cyclist at the continental level with thought about trying out Gravel in the US. So we study your race reports in detail. Again thank you!
Amazing job! What a well-executed race--your report made me tired! I used to ride dirt/sand roads in Florida in the winter to get a break from the windy roads. This was 15-20 years ago before gravel was a thing. Even with the dirt/sand roads hard from the cold it was still brutal. You could never stop pedaling even on a slight down-gradient. We called it "sticktion". After a 3-4 hour ride I'd be more tired than a 100-mile road ride.
Dylan, kick ass ride and another super video! I especially appreciate the value you put on course familiarity. Even if you were out there only racing yourself, going for a specific time or a PR, course familiarity gives you a huge advantage. I spend A LOT of time on this, and I'll admit, a lot of it is through Strava-sleuthing. OBTW, including JB's call out on your bib placement is a gem. :)
I love your race recap videos. The tactics, race footage and data are all informative and fun! So, please explain what normalized power is, and thanks!
Great work Dylan! I survived the 150, but had a massive hydration related unraveling on the 2nd lap. Rode solo the entire way back while deep in the hurt locker. Hope to see you at some NUE stuff this year!
great content, it show that you put much considerate on the way you deliver content to get a comprehensive understanding f the many component to a race! AND congratulations for your result!
Hi Dylan. Being myself a chronic feropenic anemia sufferer, I wish that you can think of making a video about iron deficiency in endurance athletes and ways to overcome it. Congratulations on your achievements and keep the awesome work!
Dude, when I look at your power numbers and for how long you pros can keep it up I just want to give up training and just enjoy the ride lol And kudos for the 2nd place! Remarcable bike race!
@@WanderingSword I definitely take care of myself, but honestly, my 32-yo and especially 22-yo self would gladly welcome the competition against the 52-yo me!
@@dormilon36 Agreed! I'm 41 yo now and used to pedal when I was 18. After 20 years being essentialy a couch potato I got back to on the bike. I got the wake up call when my father had a heart attack 2 years ago. Now training way harder than I used to and after a year and a half I still can't get even close to the old numbers.
You did amazingly well dude! It’s a pleasure to watch your race diagnosis and it’s great how openly you share. If you were on the new S works pathfinders, you would’ve had him 😉
Great video. I think you raced it really well. Super strong and fit. Probably not a whole lot you could have done differently, but I can't help thinking about the outcome had you led onto the track. 🙂
Great race Dylan!!! so close but great result for the year ahead. Factor bike looks sick. I think I spy a Giant saddle? I had flat issues with challenge tires as well in the past
OMG! You wouldn't think a race that flat would be that hard. And I wasn't out to actually race. I finished mid pack of the 50+ category and I was spent. Swore I'd never do the race again. Since I have been thinking about what I can do differently next year other than try to avoid the potholes better. I hit one hard enough that it damaged my rear rim enough that I had to put in a tube. Otherwise, my tire choice and pressures couldn't have been really any better. Maybe a tube liner next year?
GCN just reported Mathieu van der Poel’s training block used in his quick leap from injury recovery to winning the Tour of Flanders. It was Polarized, with lots of Zone 2 and some over/unders. Analyzing this would be great content.
Hi Dylan, welldone on your race, I love your videos man. Do you think you could make a video about massage guns. I think many people are interested in whether they are effective for cycling.I love your scientific approach to videos it has helped me get fitter for races.
Have you tried the new S-works Pathfinder tire? Supposedly more supple and 100 gr lighter. Congrats on the ride. I spent part of my childhood in New Bern just down the road.
In the video you mention the field running a negative split, but needing to hang on anyways to retain drafting benefits. What do you do if you know the entire main group is overcooking it to a pretty large degree? Try to hang on or let them go and run a more sustainable effort for when you know they'll blow up?
im about to start working on the road and getting in better shape aside from doing rides on my day off and my short day what should i do for training im 25 i plan on doing this for a while and want advice on how i can train my body for long bikepacking trips and gravel races for the few weeks ill have off a year. i currently have a jamis highpoint but i plan on getting a good flatbar gravelbike or all road for when im on the road and a dropbar bike for when im home possibly a surly ghost grappler (my bike shop is getting one in my size im second on the list) and a carbon gravel bike for races
He has a pretty low max heart rate or just a low threshold heart rate it seems. Look at the "Heart Rate" tab. Above 162 bpm puts him in the anaerobic zone. That would be 182 for me and even higher for others.

Well done, Dylan - super strong effort. Loved the video
