Rominger was so unlucky with punctures throughout his whole career. Tour Time-Trials often saw him hobbled by punctures. Bags of talent, but you also need luck.

Lance was just playing the Europeans’ game. Drugs were in the sport long before Lance came along. The professionals never had any ideas about sportsmanship because they saw themselves as journeyman workers doing a job to entertain. They started using drugs because they justified it because the sport was just so physically brutal; they saw it as “medical assistance” more than cheating. So Lance just went to Europe to play the Europeans’ game. That’s one reason I liked Alpine Skiing; no one would ever bother using drugs since it’s a sport of skill and mental ability. If someone did use drugs in skiing and I competed against them, I wouldn’t care because I know it wouldn’t help them win. But it’s a different story in endurance sports.

That is doubtful. But what is perhaps more relevant is the tendency of certain individuals of physiological sensitivity to EPO and other similar products. Over time it has been noted the effects can wane. That and others finding PED based advantages that are superior in same, similar or new products. Finally, for Berzin in this era he was often racing a very heavy program of the classics and Giro-TDF. This was simply unsustainable even with serious doping, and by mid-98 he was cooked. @@treygray2817
