  • Today's video is a breakdown of some useful ideas and concepts on how to make the Butterfly Guard work for sweeps in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. These are principles that helped me understand the position better and be more effective with Butterfly Guard sweeps. So I hope they do the same for you.
Keep in mind, these are ideas that I personally find useful and this is my personal philosophy on this BJJ position. It certainly isn't the only way to do it. But if you use the principles and concepts in this video I can help imagine you'll be much better at sweeping from the Butterfly Guard.
Thanks for watching the video, and good luck with your training.

Most people give up on butterfly sweeps after one attempt. My sweep rate went up exponentially after watching Adam Wadzinski land most of his sweeps on the 2nd or 3rd try. The first attempt is used to off balance them, then move your hips under them and go again before they can recover base. 60% of the time, it works every time!

Imagine if they had the same attitude toward opening the guard.

Great videos mate love watching them. Got my First BJJ class tomorrow. Pretty nervous but going to try force myself to go as I've been putting it off for years due to anxiety.. hopefully I end up liking it.

Just go. If you don't have much grappling background, don't be surprised if you get bruised in lots of weird places.

Please please please. On April first or something. Do a video where Adam is doing the demo. Maybe saying nothing, or maybe says "Adam" over and over again.
Maybe code the closed captions for subtitles.

Hey Chewy, I just had a session today where I rolled with another white belt with no stripes (like myself) and he rolled quite intensively, he said he had a foot injury and i told him about my bruised rib but regardless he still went 110% and put me into a foot lock (i dont know the move yet). He pulled my foot extremely hard even though i had tapped prematurely because i had the move done on me before by a higher belt. I let out a smaller shout and laughed it off (But he could've done some serious damage and possibly permanent) but I was confused as he said previously that he didn't know any type of leg or foot submissions. When i pressed him about how he knew the move, he said that he had learnt it from watching UFC.
I just wanted to ask you, what do you think I should do about this information?
since leg locks and heel locks are so dangerous, should i inform the instructor about this as the guy i rolled with is using moves he doesnt fully understand and is not implementing them with due process for the other person's leg or foot. My foot is pretty messed up right not but it should be alright. Only because i tapped prematurely. Just wanted to know how to proceed with this.

Just ask your instructor what are the rules surrounding that. Nobody can do attacks below the waist on my gym before a certain belt. If the rules are the same. Just let him know next time what the rules are. Or just ask him not to roll like that. Otherwise just not roll with him.
