  • Part two of this Marshall TSL 100 chassis wire disaster. We strip out all the mess and see what parts can be salvaged. This might be an odd video for some people to watch but I decided ti video it just to see how it had been constructed. There is a problem with the sound on this one, so sorry about that. I have since got to the bottom of the problem.

    The standard technician's joke is that the inside of old point-to-point, handwired Magnatone amplifiers look like the result of an explosion at the spaghetti factory; well, move over, Magnatone, the real spaghetti-factory explosion has arrived! Reminds me of some dialogue from the movie "No Country For Old Men": "This sure is a mess, isn't it, Boss?" "Well, if it ain't, it'll do 'til the real mess arrives".

    Since the knobs don't appear to have setscrews and were glued onto the shafts of the pots, it looks like the knobs were designed for splined shafts but somebody drilled out the interior of all the knobs to remove the splines! Which makes the knobs virtually useless except maybe to save the gold caps ( knob "brights", we call 'em) off the ends and use them to replace missing gold caps on other Marshall style knobs. Otherwise, you'd have at least $50 worth of knobs here, but they're pretty much useless now.

      Hello, yes I thought that too. Imagine all the work that went in to destroying those. Take care.

    Some or perhaps most of the 450 V electrolytics are probably wired in series pairs, so it's not necessarily 11 filter nodes, it might be just 5 or 6.

      To be honest they could have been all wired up together. One giant smoothing node.!!

    ...liked how you hated those neutrik jacks.... just like I do personally but I have to admit - despite from the flimsy looking plastics around it - these are the second best sockets available on the market. The contact materials are from the highest quality, spring tension is outstanding and the contact surface is actually slightly larger than those of the english cliff jacks. But - I hate them don´t know why.

      Hello. That's interesting. Some good info there. I know were you are coming from with them. They don't look and feel quality. But hey if they work well then I best be using them. Thanks for watching and take care.

    You could get a small cutting disc on a dremmel and cut through the knobs , try to save the pots. Set of knobs would be cheap enough, if you need a dremmel I have one

    What an absolute hotch potch of parts and components, and it's not even been done well. It just make you wonder what some people are thinking. Hopefully some of the parts can be reused.

    When you think about the cost, time and effort that went into this Frankenstein creation, it really makes you wonder. It seems the builder has attempted to get inside Bruce Egnater's head without his skillset and design expertise. A Soldano clone sound like a runner, but why not go the extra mile and do a Dumble 😅

    I did own a Tsl 100 . I only had it a few months and got rid because it just didn't sound very good . Not a good amplifier so I can well imagine why someone did this .

    I spoke to Marshall and asked if they would sell me a output transformer they said know and only if a was a qulified engineer and is their policy, I have been building stuff for 40 years as a hobby. I was just thinking about your faceplate.

      @vintageguitaramp_guitarteacher  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello. I have heard of other people saying the same. Red Tape. There are plenty of clone face plates that would do for this project, although I don'r think they will be long enough. Take care.

      Wow…whoever thought this failure of an amp was a blooming idiot. I just discovered your channel and subbed it. This is going to be quite an interesting project. I DEFINITELY want to see what you come up with.

    Why not make a hand wired TSL100 and you the same faceplate?

    • @badmongleo
      @badmongleo 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You’ll end up with the same problem as the previous guy spaghetti from hell and probably a lot of the problems the original circuit had like noise issues. The original circuit was over engineered and problematic in all kinds of way if you striped back the circuit to the barebones it’s kind of a good sounding but there are simpler and better sounding circuits.

    Why did you destroy this amp I can’t believe it,

    • @vintageguitaramp_guitarteacher
      @vintageguitaramp_guitarteacher  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello Craig. I didn't destroy it. It came in to the shop I work for as a unfinished project. This is not a stock TSL. The board had been removed and someone had wired several different types of amps in to it. The amp was unsafe to power up. As I had not idea what the person who built was trying to achieve, the only option was to gut it and build another design in to it that worked and was safe. Rebuilding the chassis is on my to do list. I guess the reason they stripped out the board was because it had gone conductive. You can't get the boards for these amps anymore. I will be doing a video on one of these amps in a week or two which may interest you. I understand that it may upset you to see one of these amps gutted but it had already been gutted. We looked in to getting another board for the amp but there is none available. We would have needed a full set of boards, not just the main board. Even if they were all available the cost would have out weighed what the amp was worth. Thanks for watching and take care.
