It’s so strange to hear about this through a TH-cam channel I listen to regularly. I’m Guatemalan American and it’s heard to believe that the reason I’m here was because my parents were able to seek asylum in the US because of the Guatemalan Revolution. Also that I live in the country that basically caused it is even more ironic. I enjoy the privileges that my parents weren’t able to have when they were young. This was really eye opening; all because of a scummy banana company smh 🤦‍♀️

There are still a lot of Chiquita trucks on the streets everyday and no one bats an eye, same with buying their bananas.

I appreciate how you revisited the topic, and it's very interesting seeing an explanation of history with a somewhat "neutral" tone. Though as a South American seeing a North American talk about United States intervention in our politics with such complacency is a bit upsetting. The fact that the united states had such a strong arm in the politics of these countries is far worst than the terrorist bit... which may be why the topic is so hard to cover without other people getting passionately upset against the company. Still, I appreciated the video very much.

This isn’t it with the government stuff though. Another banana company was called Cuyamel. This story takes place in Honduras. Cuyamel was owned by a guy named Samuel Zemurray and in 1910, he wasn’t happy with the current president because he gave land grants to another rival banana company. So he hired a mercenary army and gave it to his buddy, former Honduran president Manuel Bonilla and together they overthrew the president and Bonilla became the new president. This company has a connection to Chiquita, because in 1929, Cuyamel was bought by United Fruit

Terrorists in that area will steal shipments and conscript innocent people into slavery to mine diamonds for them, and when those groups get exposed and/or arrested, DeBeer's always seems surprised about it. I love your videos and have from the beginning, and I'm glad you made this one.
The reason people get upset is not because you dare to talk solely about business, but a lot of people are just sick of being sold this sterile, pretty picture of companies (totally not) committing literal crimes and atrocities, especially when in a foreign country. Every company has its scandals, but the actions of this company has impacted entire countries politically, socially, and economically. As much as I love your content, it's disappointing when people gloss over things like this and avoid taking a position just because they don't feel personally affected. I'm happy people are able to vocalize that these are topics worth discussing today, as long as they're not personally attacking you.
Again, I love your light-hearted videos and I don't expect this to be a new sociopolitical history channel, but not addressing the actions of this company is almost a statement in itself. If you talked about a cotton plantation and said "they had some controversies, but they succeeded!" I don't think it should be shocking to see people upset. These things at least deserve addressing. I'm sad you didn't take even a minor standpoint beyond "wow that's controversial" too. Again I don't turn to this channel for political takedowns, but I don't feel it's so controversial to acknowledge murder and terrorism is bad at least.
I don't know, it's just so hands-off. I understand why you'd wanna operate that way but to tiptoe around "terrorism... is controversial!" is pretty surprising. Either way I thank you for addressing it. People should know about this.

Democracy and capitalism are not perfect, but socialism and communism has caused much more death and suffering throughout history and around the world. Socialism looks great on paper but it has never worked in a positive way that didn’t cause immense suffering in reality. I’ll take regulated, lawful capitalism over socialism any day.

@@APink176 Capitalism is literally killing people right now though. Not being guaranteed the basic right to life is murdering americans this very moment as a pandemic rages through a country in which a large portion of the population is uninsured or underinsured. How are people supposed to isolate when they're their family's only source of income? Having this many people unable to socially distance because of the greed of capitalist oligarchs in this country is why so many of us are dead.
Not to mention, even before this pandemic, people were dying each year of preventable diseases that they simply couldn't afford treatment for. Insurance companies can literally dictate if you're allowed to have life-saving treatement. What kind of equitable society allows people to die for the crime of being poor?
I am sure this comment is well-meaning and I empathize with you. I would encourage you to do some research on ~why~ socialism seems to be a failing strategy and in Central and South America and elsewhere it is largely tied to U.S. interventionism as outlined partly in this video. Corporate ownership of our government is at the root of capitalism and is the opposite of democratic.

I'm Colombian. I heard about the banana massacre when I was in 5th grade (last grade of elementary school), and that's the single event in history to give me anxiety. Just thinking about it makes me so anxious... and I really had to lower the volume and wait for you to stop talking about it.
Thank you for talking abou this.

congrats on making this video on Chiquita. I did not know any of this. I have seen most of your video's, but this is possibly the most important one yet. As others have said I hope this is picked up as a subject for a full documentary This company is not inept or has a bad product like your normal video subects. This company is a criminal organisation

In Colombia the story of what UFC did there is taught in schools as a very tragic episode in Colombian history. Then followed by the theft of Panama by the US a few years later.

@Company Man I would like to see you do a Controversial Ad frenzy TH-cam video. I always watch any ads on your videos under 60 seconds. TH-cam is so greedy they throw ads that are 3-5mins long each after running one ad. So it's 13 mins of content that TH-cam wants to put 5mins of ads on it.. So I always watch 1 out of 2 and then click the link. Your videos are always entertaining and informative. Your content is always awesome, thank you!

A banana republic is a corrupt capitalist country where monopolies and corperations rule government and corperate losses are socialised while profits go into the pockets of the private elite.
