Good music has no expiration date. That’s why 99% of the trash on contemporary radio today will be long forgotten when songs like this continue to be relevant 50 years from now.
One Amazing Classic From An Unbelievable Artist. Thank You And God Bless Mr Nesmith For This And Many More Majestic Memories You Have Left Us All To Enjoy. ❤❤❤❤.
I used to crank this song up on my Sony AM=FM Cassette stereo while driving my 70 El Camino to work.18 years old and not a care in world!Miss those days............😎
Summer '79 and i was holidaying in Anglesey north wales and what a brilliant summer it was. This was played everywhere and what fantastic memories i have when i hear it. How i miss those days, carefree and simple.
Two songs that represent the summers of 1979 and 1980. These two songs always take me back to those summers. 1979 - Nick Lowe " Cruel to be kind " 1980 - The Cars " Touch and Go"
Aww, i was 19 when this came out! Before marriage, kids , work, mortgages, bills, grandkids, death....wouldn't change my life for anything but i would love to go back for 1 week and just appreciate and enjoy it one more time
1978. Just came back to The States after living in Germany for seven years. Somehow, listening to it on my '76 Pinto's FM radio was different than on AFRTS while pedaling my Raleigh Sport ten-speed on 200 KM trips. More American.
Old guy here. I totally remember this song, I was 7 or 8 yrs old, listening to Casey Kasem in my mom's car in the driveway. I learned how to turn on the AUX setting didn't drain the battery as much. Growing up then you had to be creative
My dad loved Casey Kaden. He passed around the time you posted this. He used to sit and wait in the car to list to the number one song from the 70s countdown 😂 I miss him and those moments
@@johnyuknalis177 I tend to agree with you and it was well written by Nick who's s been in the music biz for 50 years and never got the recognition he deserves .
Great stuff, real instruments, great singing, makes a clear point. All of these elements are exactly what we mean when we say MOST of the popular music of today sucks 😂
This song is so deliciously fun! The kind of song you play at the beach on a great summers day, playing volleyball. The acoustic guitar and harmonies are pure joy!
Ihave always loved this guy, his voice is utter joy , this classioc will never die lol i would like to dedicate this song to the world ,,,,THE C VIRUS WILL NOT WIN , WE ARE STRONG XXX
Oh I can't take another heartache Though you say you're my friend, I'm at my wit's end You say your love is bonafide, but that don't coincide With the things that you do And when I ask you to be nice, you say You've gotta be cruel to be kind, in the right measure Cruel to be kind, it's a very good sign Cruel to be kind, means that I love you baby (You've gotta be cruel) You gotta be cruel to be kind Well I do my best to understand dear But you still mystify and I wanna know why I pick myself up off the ground To have you knock me back down again and again And when I ask you to explain, you say You've gotta be cruel to be kind, in the right measure Cruel to be kind, it's a very good sign Cruel to be kind, means that I love you baby (You've gotta be cruel) You gotta be cruel to be kind Well I do my best to understand dear But you still mystify and I wanna know why I pick myself up off the ground To have you knock me back down again and again And when I ask you to explain, you say You've gotta be cruel to be kind, in the right measure Cruel to be kind, it's a very good sign Cruel to be kind, means that I love you baby (You've gotta be cruel) You gotta be cruel to be kind
This is a great, great, pop song. You can speculate if , what kind of Rockpile record it could have been that year 1979. The Dave Edmund album was made at the same year, the same time. Rockpile is the band playing on the album.
First release of Quiet Please had a link to get a bunch of free videos but you had to go to the link by 12-10-2010(±). I didn't open mine until a year ago! There's a lesson there. The same 2 CDs for Quiet Please are available but it's not w/a DVD nor the extras. Don't you love Nick Lowe? 'WSF'BPL&U?' is right up there w/the anthemic works by: Dylan (Like A Rolling Stone), Neil, Dino Valenti (Get Together), Fogerty 'Fortunate Son' & maybe 'Born In The USA'.
The greatest pop song ever.
Never tire of that intro😅.
Teen movies from the late 90s early 2000s have the song in a chokehold 😂 what a time to be alive.
What a song. Singalong tune if I ever heard one.
Pure and clever pop magic. Nick Lowe is the soundtrack of my life. I’ll take that.
I’m still searching for a bad song of his lol.
I want to see your what your life is like. How dark is that room? hahahha.
Just perfect. Still after all these years.
Good music has no expiration date.
That’s why 99% of the trash on contemporary radio today will be long forgotten when songs like this continue to be relevant 50 years from now.
Tasty pop rock, hand crafted by Nick. It's so tight it squeaks. Great stuff.
Truly gorgeous and timeless song, just finding it and hearing it completely for the first time here in 2024.
This beyond perfect
One Amazing Classic From An Unbelievable Artist.
Thank You And God Bless Mr Nesmith For This And Many More Majestic Memories You Have Left Us All To Enjoy. ❤❤❤❤.
The best pure pop song in history. Everything just works. Perfect tempo, excellent and clever lyrics. The bridge is awesome.
Well put. He is an underrated rock genius. 😊
@@ulla1623 Lol, name all of his "rock" hits... the guy was a one hit wonder, end of story. There are a million of them. His musicianship is average
Pure genius!
This song NEVER gets old❤!!!!!!!!
Now people, this is pure pop from the Jesus of Cool! Pure joy.
Such an Underrated gem this song is!
I was 11 in 1979 and I've loved this song since. It remains high up in my Top 100 favorites of all-time to this day.
I can relate.
@@davechupp7922 ur generation very blessed with Pops.. Wish time travel exist or maybe invented some day in my life
I was in high school; I can relate. This is still one of my favorite songs from the 70s.
I used to crank this song up on my Sony AM=FM Cassette stereo while driving my 70 El Camino to work.18 years old and not a care in world!Miss those days............😎
I was 11 also. What a time for game rooms and good music!!!
Summer '79 and i was holidaying in Anglesey north wales and what a brilliant summer it was. This was played everywhere and what fantastic memories i have when i hear it. How i miss those days, carefree and simple.
Awesome! I was 11-12 at this time! Being an adult is overrated!!!! Lol
Two songs that represent the summers of 1979 and 1980. These two songs always take me back to those summers.
1979 - Nick Lowe " Cruel to be kind "
1980 - The Cars " Touch and Go"
I was 16 and started to discover real music with all the punk, post punk, new wave, cold wave artists of the late 70's. Great memories
Was not expecting a coldwave comment on this song of all places... good taste though. ;)
renato patta .Same here.
@@49sr What is coldwave?
Takes me back to summer, 1980. Time flies. I miss those days and this great music.
°_° how old are you

Yea, life was simpler.
I started the 80s with this song. Fun times and memories. Life was simpler then appears.
10 things I hate about you

Late summer/fall ‘79 I was sure I’d discovered the best song ever. I still feel that way today.
Old guy here. I totally remember this song, I was 7 or 8 yrs old, listening to Casey Kasem in my mom's car in the driveway. I learned how to turn on the AUX setting didn't drain the battery as much. Growing up then you had to be creative
Best of times that flew
By much too fast...but we cherish those special moments
My dad loved Casey Kaden. He passed around the time you posted this. He used to sit and wait in the car to list to the number one song from the 70s countdown 😂 I miss him and those moments
Nick Lowe brought me here.
me too.
There are no word to properly describe this stuff! TEARS OF JOY!!!!!!!!
This song packs such an emotional hit in it. Every time I listen to it I get transported back 30 years.
Perfect pop song
Boy this song brings back memories of my youth back in Peru in the late seventies, goosebumps!
Yeah, a great song by any pop standards. Beatles are my FAVORITE but this song is up with the best of John and Paul. And I saw the BEATLES LIVE!
@@johnyuknalis177 I tend to agree with you and it was well written by Nick who's s been in the music biz for 50 years and never got the recognition he deserves .
i think i heard this in the 80's back in the U.S. virgin islands-st. thomas.
Likewise from my college years in Tennessee, 🇺🇸
This was the best music ever made.
Just a classic song, nothing less
This song is about the goddess of wisdom and how she wakes you up and then leaves and then boom! She’s back, then she leaves. Etc…. It’s exhilarating.
Brilliant ❤
Best song ever here. Thank you for playing, the Beatles.
Just a truly pristine pop song
Always play for my seniors after Act 3 of Hamlet. Love you Nick!
Great stuff, real instruments, great singing, makes a clear point. All of these elements are exactly what we mean when we say MOST of the popular music of today sucks 😂
I've randomly had this in my head all week 😂. It's really catchy and meaningful.
Timeless masterpiece.
Tears of joy!! ❤❤❤
It's like... WOW!!
I’ve loved Nick’s music for about the last 40 years. Also loved his work with Dave Edmonds and Rockpile. ❤😊
Still a great song.
Grown on me grown on me grown on me. 62 ❤️.
excellent harmony with tight rock instramental and a quirky twist to the lyrics!!!

2:05 until 2:21 has been my life. And I still love it! Magic:)
Man what a tune. He sounds like he could've fit right in with the Traveling Wilburys.
much better song than anything they ever did
Astute connection...British production technique, Jeff Lynn, E.L.O. "Mr Blue Sky"
too right
Totally! :D
He was part of another 'supergroup' of that type, namely Little Village , formed in 1991 with Ry Cooder, John Hiatt and Jim Keltner.
What a song. Thanks Nick.
Love this song. Listen to it every day. This is what you call music.
One of my favorites!

The Magicians brought me here 🥰
Sadly they don’t make great music like this anymore; quite frankly it prides me that I came from that generation when wonderful music was being made!

53 y/o, always thought this was ELO/Jeff Lynne. Given the time period, it makes sense. Great underrated artist
def has Lynne chord choices and harmonies, but you can't mistake his voice.
Que recuerdos!!! What a memories!!! Beautiful!!! The guitar!!!

Oh I can't take another heartache
Though you say you're my friend, I'm at my wit's end
You say your love is bonafide, but that don't coincide
With the things that you do
And when I ask you to be nice, you say
You've gotta be cruel to be kind, in the right measure
Cruel to be kind, it's a very good sign
Cruel to be kind, means that I love you baby
(You've gotta be cruel)
You gotta be cruel to be kind
Well I do my best to understand dear
But you still mystify and I wanna know why
I pick myself up off the ground
To have you knock me back down again and again
And when I ask you to explain, you say
You've gotta be cruel to be kind, in the right measure
Cruel to be kind, it's a very good sign
Cruel to be kind, means that I love you baby
(You've gotta be cruel)
You gotta be cruel to be kind
Well I do my best to understand dear
But you still mystify and I wanna know why
I pick myself up off the ground
To have you knock me back down again and again
And when I ask you to explain, you say
You've gotta be cruel to be kind, in the right measure
Cruel to be kind, it's a very good sign
Cruel to be kind, means that I love you baby
