And fantastic character actors, I might not remember their names off the top of my head but their contribution will not leave my hollow head for quiet some time. Maybe. This movie is probably overlooked in the DVD bargain bin at your local big lot box store. Well worth the 2 for 5, even if your second selection bites, this one will be well worth it." One of my Western faves but it loses some impact due to the colorization process. The original stark b/w version made one feel cold to the core...

Burl Ives always played a great villain type.
It's amazing how different a film can be when the objective is on the entertainment rather than politics, appeasing some tiny fraction of people, ..., ensuring no bugs were harmed or offended, and finally, objective #93, entertainment.
Robert Ryan passed away 50 years ago today. Half of a century. Where did the time go?
A great era for films when they understood something about the balance between characterisation, build-up and action.
I wonder how that horse held BURL IVES. He was quite a heavy man.
Tina Louise proved here that she could have been a much more serious actress. When she took the role of Ginger Grant in "Gilligan's Island" it had a similar effect on future movie producers that Marilyn Monroe had when she agreed to make a series of "cheesecake" roles in movies. It gets hard to shake an image once that image makes you iconic. By the same token, when "Gilligan's Island" Dawn Wells tried to sell herself as a sexy bad girl in roles ("The Invaders"), the audience wouldn't buy it.
Yeah ,seen this one long time ago . Unusual kind of Western like The Hanging Tree ,makes you kinda glad you caught it.
Cant blame the ranchers , the sodbusters come in and fence there range that they used freely for years. Takes lot of grass for cattle .
Cattle need grain, too -- and you need your carrots and peas, bro. LOL!

You can not watch a better western. Bonus my favorite actor Robert Ryan. you will not find a tougher more stressful fulfilling movie. Everyone involved in this movie should be proud. One movie I felt sorry for the animals and actors. Thank you so much for sharing.

Robert Ryan was one of the most reliable actors in films. He should have won at least one Academy Awards. He was only nominated once, for supporting actor in "Crossfire" in 1947. He didn't win. A pity. He worked with some of the top directors of the time. And they wanted to work with him.
Ryan was such a dullard. He could not show much emotion.
Are you kidding? The guy has the voice, the look and the intelligence of a champ ! He was literally too good for Hollywood- bloody artist actor 👌
Ryan was great at playing the bad guy. Check out Clash By Night, with Robert Ryan, Paul Douglas & Barbara Stanwyck & Marilyn Monroe, a great movie.

Raw, Realistic, and Repeatedly Rich! Every time I watch this, it gets better. I think this may be the debut of Tina Louise? ( or "God's Little Acre"? ) anyway, she was good. Ryan and Ives are always worth watching... Thanks.

I enjoyed the dynamics of this movie. The storyline starts one way, then took a different spin toward a darker plot. When the really bad guy's rode into town. And raised mayhem with the towns people. Especially with the females, who had nowhere to run or hide. Even though it was fictional. The reality would had been unforgiven. Overall the movie is worth watching.

Is it just me, or does anyone else get the feeling Pale Rider was largely inspired by this? The plain buildings, the snow capped mountains...the setting just seems similar
"Pale Rider" was a rip-off of "Shane".
Eastwood always did his homework - I think so too - especially for the set and shot perspectives!
IMO, this movie ‘Day of the Outlaw’ is more 'noir' uncolored as the artist intended. The starkness of the landscape is highlighted better in black and white, just as the severity of the clashing human emotions are. Colorizing this movie defiles it.

This is one of my favourite westerns, but I don't think it's improved by having a small child colouring over the negative with some poorly-chosen crayons.

Burl Ives was very popular in the 1960's, I was a kid then and I thought he was great in so many different roles, like in Ensign Pulver, The Big Country, East of Eden, Cat On a Hot Tin Roof, and as Santa in Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer!

I remember watching this movie and Earnest Borguine told this funny story about how Spencer Tracy manipulated the camera man to steal every scene for himself. That man was a genius!
