I wasn't in the military but I had a similar experience when I managed an 18 house movie theater and we had to prepare for our annual corporate audit which also helped determine our bonus. Every piece of gum on the sidewalk and leading up to the box office window and every piece of gum on every seat in each theater had to be gotten up. From that day forth if I saw someone spit gum on the sidewalk, oh it was on!

Got the most glorious payback on a drill 3 years later on Carson. They had our battalion doing the augmentee gate duty. He pulls up and hands me his ID mind you I'm a sgt now and he's a staff sgt. So I say good evening sgt, as I'm scanning his ID. He looks at me with fire in his eyes and says that's drill sgt to you. I said o my apologies I forgot to tell you drill sgt you have been randomly selected for a vehicle inspection. The one MP on the gate saw it and ran with it worse than me got the dog out there and everything pretty funny night. Then he got butt hurt and went and complained to the sgm totally worth it.

    ARMY LOGIC
Stores - A place which has a sole purpose to supply kit and equipment and support fighting troops, a place where you're guaranteed to get shouted or moaned at for asking for said equipment.
Clothing stores - Similar to the stores, but has a sole purpose of supplying and exchanging clothing to fighting troops. The clothing stores has an allocated time slot for each platoon roughly three times a year, a place which is reluctant to give you clothes as if the cost was coming out of their own pocket. The clothing stores, outside of said allocated slots, appears to do nothing for the rest of the year, yet grips you up if you enter outside of said time slot.
Armoury - A mediocrely secure compound where fighting troops weapons and attachments are stored. The armoury mysteriously requires an extra two hour window prior to drawing weapons for the troops to arrive, whom will wait a further hour after the drawing time because the armourer 'didn't get the timings'. As a side note the weapons all need to be 100% cleaned fort nightly, yet miraculously survive just fine during leave periods.
Block inspections - Without meaning to insult your intelligence, the block is your home, a room that you pay for each month, and room which belongs to you, to do with as you please. However, despite paying for that privilege, you are enforced to 100% clean this room before going on leave for all of the guests who will not come into your room during leave periods. The hours of cleaning and scrubbing and anxiety leads to an inspection because obviously a 25 year old man is incapable of his personal hygiene. The room is inspected by a person of rank entering your room, doing a courtesy lap, nodding politely and leaving without saying a word.
Enforced fun - Nights out, every once a while you are enforced to go out as a platoon/company collective. You are told there is no LOE and no curfew, but get charged for breaking the LOE and curfew despite being an adult and having returned unharmed and not missing.
Adventure training - adventure training is a week where troops are told they have to go and do adventurous activities, consisting of trekking, cycling, trekking, rock climbing, trekking, kayaking and trekking. Said troops are then told off for not enjoying the trekking of which they do for a job anyway.
Honey traps - A soldier is informed that a weapon part is called a 'carrying handle'. He then gets shouted at and called a shit cunt lizard Mong for using said carrying handle for its primary purpose. A soldier is issued a jacket with fleece lined pockets, he is then shouted at and called a shit cunt lizard Mong for using said pockets and told to put the cold hands on the cold ground to do press ups to, ironically, warm up. A soldier is issued water proof clothing, he is then ridiculed and called a shit cunt lizard Mong for wearing said clothing when it's raining.
Rank logic - A corporal is sitting at his desk, on his desk is a bottle of water, a kettle, a box of tea bags and a carton of milk. The corporal calls a private soldier from his bed space to make him a cup of tea. The corporal proceeds to tell the private soldier to have some pride about himself, the same pride that he'd just single handedly abolished.
Company runner - A daily allocated tasking for one lucky soldier, whose primary mission is to run around camp to locate a man or a place that doesn't exist, just because phones are unreliable.
Wrong place wrong time - A Sergeant asks a private soldier why he hasn't done a certain tasking, a tasking which he hadn't been told about at all. After informing said Sergeant that he wasn't told, he is then called a lazy idle cunt and offered to a fight behind the Hesco Bastion.
Not accepting no for an answer - A Sergeant asks a storeman for all of the infra red cyalumes. The storeman hands over said cyalumes and specifically confirms to the Sergeant that they were indeed ALL of the cyalumes. An hour later the Sergeant returns to the storeman and asks for more cyalumes. When he is told that there is no more, he is asked three hundred times whether he is sure, and told to go and check anyway.
Let's make it happen - A phrase specifically used to motivate private soldiers to adhere to a literally impossible tasking.
I want solutions not problems - A phrase used by someone of rank who plainly cannot be bothered to do his job or fathom a solution for himself.
Paperwork - One of the most organised establishments in the government manages to lose the paperwork for the PFA you'd passed last week, but some how archived the fact that you didn't wear one twisty on patrol that time four years ago.
Too many chiefs - When a stable plan is going ahead just fine, but someone of rank sticks his beak in and proceeds to change said plan in an attempt to show unnecessary authority. The plan then goes wrong and private soldiers are left in sideways rain and 80mph winds for three hours whilst said person of rank retreats in a Land Rover.
The Brecon point - When someone points to a reference point, but uses all four fingers and sometimes a thumb because it's 'more prominent'.
Thinking soldier - A soldier is drilled that he is a thinking soldier. When said soldier thinks for himself, he gets shouted at and told that he isn't paid to think and called a shit cunt lizard Mong.
Injuries - A soldier breaks his leg to the point where the bone is protruding from the flesh, he is called a mincing cunt and told to crack on. If a soldier falls unwell at midday, he must wait until the next morning to request permission from the Sergeant major, who isn't at work yet, to go to sick parade which he's already late for. He is then shouted at for being late for sick parade.
Fight light - A relatively new policy the army employs with the intention of removing excess weight from a fighting soldier so that he is lighter and more agile. No kit is actually removed from his fighting order, it is just transferred to his webbing like an expert level of Tetris.
Arrowhead formation - A formation employed in the doctrine which has a section of soldiers crossing open ground in an arrow. The soldiers spend their whole time looking at the pretty little arrow and trying to stay in formation that they don't get a chance to check their arcs. As a side note when the arrow turns slightly, the rear man ends up running an extra 400m just to stay in formation.
Double standards - A soldier is asked if he has a notepad and pen to borrow. The soldier does not have a notepad and pen and is AGAI'd for not having the equipment that the prosecutor didn't have originally. A soldier is getting shouted at by a Sergeant for the crease in his shirt, whilst trying not to look at the crease in the Sergeant's shirt.
NIG - A cruel word for someone new to the battalion, because clearly they're less of a person for joining later than you did. A soldier is ludicrously called a NIG because he wasn't in Northern Ireland, as if it was his fault he was still in Primary school.
Conventional warfare - Soldiers are taught to set up their Ponchos in a triangle formation inside a woodblock, this is an area that they operate out of and consider a haven, because a thin piece of tarpaulin stops fast air strikes and indirect fire.
STAG - A soldier is woken up in the dead of night. He has to leave his warm sleeping system and don all of his wet, cold and sweaty clothes. He then stumbles to a flimsy poncho, receives a non existent handover, hopes that he doesn't get caught smoking, stares at a cloud, proceeds to go down with numerous cold injuries and 'protects' the company from the rapidly encroaching figure 11 targets.
Army jargon - Replacing perfectly applicable words with ridiculous phrases just because everyone else does. For example 'I'm really struggling my friend' becomes 'I'm in fucking turbo shit state mucker'
Lizard - An apparently insulting name for anyone that does anything wrong, but can't be justified as to why a lizard is insulting.
Ranges - If allocated ammunition is not used, it must be fired through relatively clean weapon systems rather than handed back into the ammunition stores.
Background activity - A professional way of saying 'We can't let the lads do nothing so let's give them a lesson on something irrelevant and basic'.
ALI - Airborne light infantry, a word used to describe something seen as operationally cool, despite us disliking the parachute regiment.
Parade - Every morning the company will stand in three pretty lines. A soldier looks to his left and right at similarly aged adults as their names are called out in a similar fashion to a school register by someone younger than them.
REMF - Rear Echelon Mother Fucker, a term used to describe anyone who isn't in the infantry. Commonly used by the ignorant soldiers who believe that the army can be run by a merry band of infantrymen and are jealous of the career progression and less arduous jobs of the other corps.
MT - A soldier has been driving on roads by himself for 8 years. He is not allowed to drive on roads in a military camp unless he has an NCO in the vehicle with him, even if the NCO is younger with less or no road experience.
Viper - A thermal imaging weapon sight. Not actually called a viper but we call it that anyway because the old one was.
Hurry up and wait - Soldiers are told that they have to report to a certain RV immediately. Only to stand in the cold for a further forty five minutes to an hour. 85% of the time soldiers are fell out as the timing is cancelled.
The kit check - A soldier is issued a detailed list of exactly what he needs to pack into his kit regardless of how unnecessary it may be, whether it be for a six month operation, an eight week exercise, or an overnight guard duty 200m from the block. After packing his kit perfectly, he must RV with the platoon 30 minutes prior to the kit check for the pre kit check kit check. The pre kit check kit check takes place in either a room too small to swing a d

DS didnt touch us, barely cursed if at all, we took the bus multiple times to the field because of the cold temperatures, mandatory 8 hours of sleep, which i got everyday, except maybe 2 that got interrupted with trashcans. I had tried my best to prepare myself for all the smoking a limit pushing, mental anguish, etc etc. I thoroughly enjoyed basic training. I was an AIT Company commander. This was in the early 2000s so we had FPCON level Charlie and had armed AIT students posted at virtually every door including the door to the building where my and 1SGs office was. I went to lunch and came back. The AIT student had fallen asleep in the chair they got without permission and their rifle was on the ground. I quietly pick up the rifle not waking the soldier. I went into my 1SG office and let them know what happened. 1SG had this eagles feather he got at a previous post, I want to say at Hood or Carson. He woke up the soldier by ticking his nose with the feather then dropped the feather on the ground and started screaming at them “secure my feather private!” I could hear this out of my office and almost died trying not to laugh. I looked out the window to see 1SG had this private holding the feather at present arms. 1SG did this for an hour. The privates soul was crushed knowing they went through muscle failure and tears streaming down their cheek from just holding a feather.
