Kay Lawson is a Xolo breeder and AKC judge. She is the head judge for the Xoloitzcuintli breed. In the episode of All About, Kay takes us from A to Z in regards to the Xolo.
The Xoloitzcuintli or Xolo for short, is a hairless breed of dog, found in toy, miniature, and standard sizes. The Xolo also comes in a coated variety and coated and hairless can be born in the same litter. It is characterized by its sparse hair coat and a severe oligodontia. This phenotype is a consequence of Canine Ectodermal Dysplasia caused by a mutation on the Foxl3 autosomal gene. It is also known as the Mexican hairless dog in English-speaking countries and is one of several breeds of hairless dog.

@Jason Reyes That is a fat lie, if you did some research you will find out that is a lotta bollocks. Malamutes ancestors are no older than 2k-3k years and the modern malamute was bred out of alaskan sled dogs and european dogs during the 1920s.

My little guy (4.5 lbs) was a "coated" Xolo. After 11 years together, 24/7, I just don't know what I am going to do without him. I think he was 4-5 yrs old when I rescued him. He passed away three weeks ago. His ghost haunts me. I see him everywhere. He was the most steadfast, "velcro," magnificent companion. Careful falling in love with a Xolo.

Also it's important to say, according to the Mexica Legend, the first step when began your trip to the after life, (that takes 4 years) is cross a river, in order to to that, you need the help of one Xolo dog, if in life, you hurt or be cruel with dogs, they will not help you and you will stuck between the living and the dead. Also the skin color was important, if they have dark skin you'll not be able to follow in the dark, if it a ligth tone, they dont want to help you, because they will get stain. That's why this blue gray or chocolate color was appreciated.

My fur nephew is a mini xolo that my sister rescued seven years ago. Most of the time he lives in the city, but occasionally gets to play being a farm dog. Even taught himself how to herd sheep after watching his BFF (an Icelandic sheepdog) do it. He is SO smart. If A = B, and B = C, he knows that A = C, too. Living with him is more like having a roommate than a dog. :)

Got my Xolo from a shelter but he has hair on his head, his tail and on the paws. He looks so old because of no hair on his face. He has only 3 paws as his left front paw was amputated after a Truck hit him. He was nearly 1 year at a shelter. I love him very much - he is the boss now of our 4 other dogs. He is our "police dog" - if the others play to harsh, he divides them so nobody is accidentically hurt. He has only three legs but he runs fast - little speed is his his only problem. The others willl lower theur runspeed when playing together so he can have joy playing together. He is very protective - if my gardener go to near to me he growls (seen him twince ) He accept strangers if i tell them to enter but he is very protective if they dont keep enough distance to me - he growls. I love my Xolo from the shelter. I see him, he licks my hand, i fell in love with him at the shelter. We was friends at first sight. He is a very friendly dog to our other dogs, my husband. But i see he protects his friends.

I told Kay Lawson, I was weary about her vaccination schedule, she ignored me because she worked with the big Caliente kennel in Tijuana. She said the over-vaccination was necessary but it was not. What a bummer Kay killed my Muneca. She was so special. 💔💔💔

This is my favourite dog breed. They're amazing. The Mexican people believe that they can treat rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune disease, because they are so warm! It is also believed that the common chihuahua is derived from the Xolo. Which, if you look at the breed shape (not size) makes sense. The head is very similar, as is the chest. So what probably happened, was that the village smaller dogs evolved into the chihuahua and developed more fur over time. This may also be why chihuahua are also very protective and make good "alert dogs" as well as seizure alert dogs. The Xolo also has very little known breed illnesses, due to their lack of human breeding for a long period of time. Anyways, great dog. I love them and what they mean for their culturem

My uncle in Mexico saved a xolo from being sacrificed and sent it to us in California. At first he was so shy and scared but he learned that we cared for him. My uncle ended up rescuing another xolo(female) so we jump at it. They bred and we got 3 hairless and 3 coated. One of the hairless ended up not making it. But we still have them. Everyone that looks at them ask us if they’re hyenas lol but the 3 coated Xolos look different 2 look like a black Labrador and gold Labrador and one like a German sherperd(he has long crazy hair) and they get surprised when we say they are all the same breed. They are all lovable and we love them! And yes they are really warm when you cuddle with them lol

It's so neat to see that even though within the past few decades the Xolo has been selectively bred, and I'm sure they have a different appearance as they did a hundred of years ago, but they're still very primal in their appearance/build and their stature is quite stunning! I never liked the look of the hairless dogs (or hairless cats for that matter), especially the smaller ones, but the standard sized hairless Xolos in this video are absolutely beautiful!
