    What a clever way to make good use out of what would initially appear to be unsuitable material. John is very fortunate to get a chance to work with Mr. Chan one-on-one. Great videos!

    Cool raft, have not done one yet, I found one in nature on Mt Erie here near my house, I studied it a lot, I was amazed how the branches became trees before I know what a raft was. Also on the same mountain I found a branch that had broken off, the main tree had rotted away but it was still alive, I assume there must be some roots that are growing out from the tip to the ground somewhere, it was a puzzle but amazing how nature tries to survive.

    Hey Peter! Thanks for a great new video :) I was wondering if it would be possible to get a video on exhibition bonsai, prep & wiring and so on. I would absolutely love to see your exhibition specimens and how you take care of them!

    Amazingly creative. Wouldn’t the raft’s survival chances be better if this process was performed in the spring? Thanks

      Junipers are very tough - so it is OK to do this at any time.

    Can I keep a Japanese Maple tree in my unheated shed over the winter? There's no windows. So no sun light gets in. Sounds dumb. But if there's no leaves. They don't need sun right?

    • @peterchan3100
      @peterchan3100 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Where do you live? Because if your winters are not too hard - then you can leave it out until you get hard frost say minus 10 C or lower. When it is frozen over - keep it in the shed but when the temp is just above freezing -bring it out again.

      @@peterchan3100 I'm in New Jersey. So we get a couple cold months.
      I'm air layering a large maple, trunk about 4in diameter. It's been 6 weeks and haven't checked of roots yet. But if it roots. I obviously need a place to store it.

    • @peterchan3100
      @peterchan3100 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@frankie2cents94 If there are no roots on your air layering then wait till next year. Even if there are some roots (but not enough roots) then you should also let it grow on till next year for more roots to develop.

      @@peterchan3100 so leave the plastic/air layer on over the winter then?

    this was fascinating for me, I’ve never seen it done. Nature is wonderful: this tree will find a way to live and thrive even if it’s all twisted and on its back as long as it has good conditions to do so. Amazing. I have a n unrelated question though. In a Chinese shop in Ottawa, 🇨🇦 , I bought a beautiful bonsai on clearance. A Japanese juniper in a beautifully carved terracotta pot. Now, I red that Junipers cannot live indoors, however, our winters here in Canada are harsh, -30 oC. I’m planning to overwinter it in my garage which is not heated but it will be in the dark all winter. However, I fear for the terracotta pot as the cold will most likely break it, it would be a shame, it has beautiful carvings. Should I put the tree in a plastic pot and keep the nice terracotta pot safely indoor and comes spring I could just transplant the tree back in it? Yeah, I think that’s what I’ll do... Should I put it in a plastic pot now or wait for the first frost?

      ...if you have a garden, dig the Bonsai in and put a pile of leafs on top... only letting the the branches stick out...the plant still needs the light...
      If it is a real quality bonsai pot it should be fine...
      Ciao from Montreal😉

      you could wrap a whole newspaper around the terracotta pot which will keep it in tact during the winter.
