Mythbusting This CRAZY TV Scene

  • After watching a cast saw cut through a metal pole in the show Royal Pains, we wondered, "is that accurate?" Cast saws are known to be able to cut through casts but not skin, so could one actually be used to cut through a metal pole? Today we're putting that myth to the test and seeing whether or not it gets busted.

That’s a logical issue. The skin is flexible and moves with the blade, not being torn or ripped. As you can see in the video, it does more damage to a pipe then to skin, even while skin is more softer. But that last part is the key. It only cuts something which is harder on the outside. Like the Apple, which is very thin but harder on the outside.

While great for some jobs, i can't imagine one of them cutting anything more than a nail or a small bolt.
As a side note, if you ever burn up (or just wear out) a saw blade, just sharpen that edge into a knife blade. Works amazingly well on rubber and soft plastics, but you have to keep pulling the cut apart. So just bend whatever you're cutting and cut on the 'outside' of said bend.

    • @TheInfinityzeN
      @TheInfinityzeN 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You got that backwards actually. You multi tool oscillator is a modified and improved version of a cast saw. The cast saw came out in the mid 1940s, while the first variation "Master Tool" (The Fein Multimaster RS) came out over 40 years later in the late 1980s. The speed of a cast saw is optimized for cutting plaster and fiberglass and they only come with blades optimized for cutting those materials. Multi Tools/Master Tools/Oscillating Saws have variable speed motors so that they can be dialed in to the proper speed range for the blade used and materiel being cut.

It's also hollywood, so there's the possibility that not only were they using a disguised material (ie, it looked like it was metal but it was actually PVC or some other softer-but-rigid material painted to look like metal) but also some visual affects were added in post (ie, it's a metal tube and cutting metal generally creates sparks so they painted in sparks to help sell the metallicity).

A long time ago, I was helping out with finishing a mock up for the Paris Air Show. We were trimming glassfibre mouldings to fit. I was holding one of the moldings and the fitter was using a windy oscillating saw to cut it. I felt the saw blade cut through my fingers and nearly passed out. The fitters noticed and asked what was wrong? I said the saw cut me. He laughed and grabbed my hand there was a white line across my fingers, glassfibre dust. The saw hadn't even broke the skin. With the hardness of the glassfibre and the noise of the saw, I was convinced that I had been seriously injured. The shock reaction lasted several minutes and I was somewhat embarrassed but relieved that I still had my fingers.

Please make a whole dinner spread with the cast saw
(cutting stake or chicken or ribs and the cutting of potatoes or carrots or other foods)

The old cast saws in the early 90's would get the cast hot and even slightly have a burning feeling to the skin. Sometimes leaving a red line. They wrap the area better with cotton now also.

I've repair the medical saws shown in the show and their blades is pretty similar to the ones you used no carbide tip on those

It would cut through the steel pipe with the correct blade and speed (variable speed ones are a thing for a reason) - but it would probably take more time than the show offered. You are correct, it would not throw sparks.

Independent variable: What you cut with the saw
    Dependent variable: How it cute
    Controlled variable: The saw

As a construction worker we use a tool similar to this what you have will cut through metal if you had the right blade. Apparently the one they were using did in fact spin that is the only way your getting sparks. Maybe what they were using was an outdated cast cutting saw before they switched to the oscillating saw.

These they used was more like a Dremel where it does constant rotation the guard on it is what stops it from going into the arm instead of the motion because the specific cast saw they used can also cut through metal braced casts

Tkor just do whatever it takes to prove their point, the saw used in the show was just called a medical saw, probably a bone saw.

They do make diamon tipped cast saw blades. That would give it the hardness needed to cut the metal, though I don't know if it would be enough

Here's a fun idea. So diffusers that you put water in and some essential oils, right? What if you just fill up the diffuser with essential oil, or other liquids like soda or milk or wine and see how it smells and how it works. I'd be interested in seeing that.

In the show Royal Pains they might of used something like a Dremel tool and just said it was a cast saw. I use my Dremel tool weekly to cut things, and when cutting metal it always sparks. The short bit that was shown , it looked like "the Tool" had a spark guard on it

its basically the same thing as a multitool people use in house remodeling and sometimes for other stuff, i have one i use to cut small peices of wood and plastic stuff, like i cut out a hole in my cars dashboard for a stereo with one, they can cut nails and screws very easily too with correct blades
