    The ultimate analogy of trickle down economics is Thorin Oakenshield promising that with the support of Lake Town, once he reclaims his gold horde, the wealth will flow down from Lonely Mountain and bless the people. But when he finally reclaims his gold, his mind becomes so warped by his precious treasure that he refuses to share it with anyone. Despite the fact that the support of the people was what allowed him to gain the gold.

And they will NEVER decide that 99% of EVERYTHING is enough. It's not. That one percent that has to feed the rest of humanity is far more than they deserve. They are not rich, they are not powerful, they do not improve MY bottom line. I do not need them, but i DO need what little they own. This was in the early 1970s. I just graduated from a small Christian college in Southern Cal. At a party outside of the campus, the Dean visited to congratulate and mingle. Not a big deal since at a small institute we all knew the faculty and administrators. A female student (very sweet and attractive) came to our little group of graduates a bit shocked and dismayed that when the Dean came up to her for what she thought would be a hug and congratulations, he instead held her tight and proceeded to "French kiss" her. She pulled away and went to the other side of the room to distance herself from him. We calmed her down saying that the Dean was probably drunk. Forget about it we said. She was 22 or so and he was in his 50s. I'm sorry we didn't tell her to report his sorry ass. Christian college, indeed.

      I wish I have done more but we (I) were at the time pretty lame and cowed to speak out against unwanted sexual abuse and exploitation of women. My girlfriend/later spouse who was a Betty Friedan, Gloria Steinman, Germaine Greer, Ms. Magazine, Anais Nin, Erica Jong' Helen Reddy ("I am woman, hear me loud blah, blah, blah, etc) , "burn your bra" militant feminism, "women's lib" movement who the one suggested we just accept that behavior as that of an asshole drunk. Well, this lovely lady (to whom I am no longer married to)sensitized me to those problems and issues. I welcome the current backlash and dialogue.

    • @patriciax3677
      @patriciax3677 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      almost sounds like you're still annoyed or something at your feminist ex but what about you? Even hard-core, dedicated feminists back then learned which battles to fight and might be worth it and which ones might not...It's not easy to step up to that plate when you're first...it's very easy to find fault though, esp. if you, yourself weren't ready to put your own skin on the firing line. Your old girlfriend/spouse may have some regrets now too but at least she learned and cared. Action requires strength...we all have different degrees of that and being part of a crowd is much less hard than standing alone. Wonder if you would have supported her had she spoken up even if you didn't dare to?

    • @jguerrero447
      @jguerrero447 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sorry that you get that impression from my post here and/or the one above. It might be a bit of projection on your part. We were very transparent with each other; hers with her feminist views and ideas, mine with my steadfast support. Also, I tried to be supportive of the feminist movement and the need for women's' rights (which 50 years later are still a work in progress!) by my own words and actions, i.e, not be "a male chauvanist pig". I believe I've stayed true to those ideals.

    • @That80sGuy1972
      @That80sGuy1972 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      "Congress has no Idea what it actually is passing." Um, that's pretty common. Politicians often ask their donors how they should vote on something without bothering to read it or have their staff read it. It's a huge reason money-in-politics is a corrupting force.

    • @Anon54387
      @Anon54387 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @That80sGuy1972
      @That80sGuy1972 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Follow the money. Political donors liked the ACA. They can make money off it. More people getting care, more people buying their medical gear and medicine. The ACA is a federal version of Romney Care and when it was originally installed, it was a horrible screw-everyone thing that frightened most people into buying their own care. Over the years, its kinks were getting worked out. Republicans yell about scrapping it to get uninformed people to vote Republican because it was a Democratic baby. Obama was able to pass it because it was the best of what Republicans would agree to, Romney Care. Undoing the ACA is a distraction from bigger issues, almost hostage taking, so nobody talks about money in politics.

      Most rich people invest their money. Which helps businesses grow and innovate. But yeah no one needs all that money but what do you do? Take it for no reason? People are rich cuz other people gave them money. Steve Jobs was rich cuz people bought his crap. People buy iPhones and cars then complain that the ceos has too much money.

    • @Ericwvb2
      @Ericwvb2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The problem with ever more money being poured into the pockets of the 1% is that yes, some will be spent, some will be invested to help businesses grow and innovate. But how much? As more and more money flows to the top, there is less actual opportunity to invest in and more goes to speculation, which in turn produces a bubble economy which then pops.
      Compare $1 million going into a the bank account of a billionaire to $1 million going to food stamps. The billionaire may simply have the money sitting in a bank account or his hedge fun manager may use it to buy bitcoin, or it could be invested in the next Apple or Google - who knows? On the other hand, the $1 million in food stamps will all be spent on groceries. Each purchase will support a local business, create local jobs, and stimulate the economy.
      It's not that rich people do not use their money to do anything positive, they may or may not. One thing is for sure, with income and wealth equality the way they are in the USA, we need more money going into people in the middle class and the poor, not the rich. 90% of Americans agree, when shown the wealth distribution of Sweden, that it is superior to America's. Most people do not understand how ludicrously unbalanced it actually is.

    • @fredg.sanford634

      We had to give away 1.2 trillion so that 100 million of it " trickles down" to employees of certain companies and that some folks will get $1100.00 of tax relief for a year or two? We could have given everyone in the country $4500.00 a head instead. Simple arithmetic.
      To make up for the huge revenue losses/budget gaps that this "reform" will create, the GOP will steal yet more of our SS and Medicare INSURANCE PREMIUM payments. However, as those funds have been almost completely redistributed to the .01% by conservative cut-purses over the last 37 years, they will need to borrow even more heavily from the corrupt coven of creeps who will already be drowning in the money thrown at them by their Republican and corporate Dem puppets. .
      The uber-wealthy won't/don't create jobs with their fortunes. Why would they take on any risk as they are guaranteed perpetual returns in the form of the interest that WE PAY them on the debt? They just need to tell their political toady's to keep the scam functioning.( Shit, even when they do more with their purloined treasure than simply collecting interest, they still run no risk, because we get the honor of bailing them out.)
      This is loan-sharking 101. The principal amounts that constitute our debt, by design, will never be paid off. The interest will forever flow to our owners, eventually yielding them an ROI that will be a grotesque multiple of the original amount "loaned".
      The ever increasing deficit will eventually be used by some Paul Ryan clones to justify gutting SS and Medicare(The conservative wet dream.), even though their EMBEZZLING OF OUR PREMIUM PAYMENTS and the redistribution of those funds to their donors is/will be the cause of the insolvency of those programs.
      Welfare for the wealthy and austerity for everyone else.

    The factory worker at one point asked his CEO "But how does trickle down economics work?"
    The owner grabbed laid his arm over his shoulders and said "Let me explain by analogy. I see that your car is parked over there. I also see that it has seen its better days." This was true, the car was very old and worn down.
    "Contrast that with my car, which is parked over there." he said while pointing. "As you can see it is a much more luxurious and exclusive car."
    "What trickle down economics is that if you work very, very hard and with a great discipline, then one beautiful day, I can afford an even better car."

    How about a trickle up effect. here's how it works, give the lower class and middle class tax cuts and then that gives them more money to spend and thereby the corporations sell more products and can then afford to, and need to, hire more people.

    • @Horsethief666
      @Horsethief666 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jamie Rueffer that does make sense. However I'm in my mid 20 and have never made enough to pay taxes. If you're married with kids and make 50k you won't pay crap. The government would have to give more tax credits not tax cuts for me to trickle it up. Which I don't like but I'm not gonna refuse it.

    It's called trickle-down for a reason. The people in the lower classes only ever see a trickle. So it does work as the name suggests, but it does not help the economy. What it does is dig a deeper and deeper pool at the top, only accessible to the people already at the top, allowing only a small amount to trickle over the edges to the hungry working classes down below. And the lower you are the less you see.

The baby boomers are nostalgic for a childhood fantasy from some Little House in the Prairie book, and Gen Y 40 year olds talk like my racist sexist great-grandparents who were born in the 1800's. Who the hell are these people? When I was 16, I was working on a McGovern campaign. Now, people of my generation act as if the 1960's never happened. Ah well. I never recognized the mom in the Kool-Aid commercials, either. My mom never wore a dress and pearls with her hair flipped up, offering the neighborhood brats Kool-Aid and cookies. Good Lord.

    How about using bubble up economy instead of trickle down.
    Tax the wealthy, use the tax money to subsidize local factories, support new startups, fund various projects, provide welfare support. All these things would inject money into lower levels of economy, raising people's purchasing power and thus, making them consumers. More consumers = more stuff for rich people to sell their products to.
    Simply giving out free money to people would have better effect to economy than giving it to rich people.
    Poor / mid class people will spend the money on buying stuff...which creates jobs to those who produce the stuff

    I really don't understand why people are arguing about whether or not "trickle-down" economics works or not. It is ridiculous to argue over this issue. It objectively works brilliantly in terms of being great at doing what it is designed to do. It also objectively hurts anyone who isn't rich, damages the economy overall where it is implemented, & will raise the deficit & debt by a absolutely ridiculous amount when the fantastical delusions they use to "score" the impacts from the "growth" thus growing the deficit & debt by more than they already believe it will be. But, hey look that is going to be doing the same because when the deficit & debt come back around & a Democrat is in office they will find it extremely helpful as a way to try & stop anything the Democrat wants to d o & sets up perfectly their talking points about needing to privatize or cut Social Security and/or Medicare because "we just can't afford it."
    So again, "trickle-down" economics works great doing what it is meant to do. It will give rich people & big businesses all sorts of great things, it will hurt everyone else. Any nonsense someone tries to say about it ultimately in some fashion coming around to benefit any sort of semi-normal person they are either just stupid/ignorant/etc... or they are just lying.
