    Thats called bubble net feeding, the whales corral the small fish and swim up from below to gulp them. The divers unknowingly were right in the midst of the bubble net.

    This is a prime example of how beautiful, thoughtful and yet unpredictable nature can be. I don't think that guy was in any danger, like a previous comment said, that humpback probably knew exactly where he was and fished around him. This video shows why we need to increase our stewardship of this planet, preserve these amazing creatures and their whole food chain.

    If a diver got caught in a whales mouth he would likely become trapped there. I have heard that a whales throat is to narrow to swallow a man, but that does not mean the whale would not dive soon into depths of 800 or 900 feet where a scuba diver would have no chance of surviving.

    It's very unlikely verging on impossible for a -blue- humpback whale to eat a human. Their throats are less than a foot in diameter and they don't have teeth capable of shredding their prey. Worst case scenario would be getting trapped in it's mouth until you had a chance to escape (or drown). There are no recorded events of a -blue- humpback whale ever consuming a human, partially or whole.

    • @elalalejale
      @elalalejale 10 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Well smart ass even a 10 year old knows that but the scary part is as you can see in the video the diver had a very close encounter, if he was a little bit more on the right side the whale would actually take him in it's mouth god knows what would happen next. Stupid filthy casual

Around '88 or '89, at the end of a dive off the island of San Miguel, some 15 of us divers on a commercial(Truth Aquatics) dive boat, we all complained about the krill school in the water, making a "clicking" sound. Suddenly, a humpback rose out of the water on his side with his mouth wide open and glided past the boat no more than 50 ft away. We all stood there in stunned silence.

    humpback whales can't swallow a man whole. They have very small throats. And even so, they filter what they catch by forcing water through their baleen, and a human is quite the uncomfortable mouthful. I mean this is unbelievably cool, don't get me wrong, but the only danger those divers were really in would be the force o the whale's momentum as it breaches

  • @OneBiasedOpinion
    @OneBiasedOpinion ปีที่แล้ว +1

    They’re not stupid. Their mouths would never be able to process something as big as a human being.
    They deliberately went as close as possible to get as much of the shoal as they could without scooping the diver up.

    Whales are smarter than people think. They have impeccable range, distance and sonar for proximity. Also, they know when there are food sources there or boats that aren’t their cup of tea. If they were dummies, many a human would have been toast. Brilliant creatures 🐋

    Megaptera novaeangliae is the Latin name for a humpback whale. Loosely translated it means "large winged New Englander" because they were first described off the coast of Massachusetts and the first thing you notice about them is their long flippers which are a third of their body length which can reach 50 feet
