I thought it was funny that they work on the dudleys. They're clearly fat dudes, but I guess because they're short they could be lifted by any smaller guys. I don't think I've ever seen Rey lift anyone any heavier than like Chavo
Honestly the minute wrestling games started becoming more of a simulation instead of an arcade style like the past games that’s when they started to suck, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it
They should have done an 'arcade' mode that featured the classic style of gameplay in the new games. But of course, the WWE isn't about good ideas half the time.
I think you nailed it by calling this a "transitional" entry because that is exactly what it is. As someone who ate up all of these PS2 wrestling games back in the day on a yearly basis, there is still some nostalgia from this one. The graphics were definitely improved and as you said the soundtrack is still incredible to this day. Looking back, however, this title has the misfortune of being sandwiched between arguably two of the best games in the series with HCTP and 2006. Those games took massive leaps over their predecessor where this one kind of was a lateral move or even a few steps backwards especially regarding the roster depth. Great review!

100% correct, It's just not believable anymore there are hardly any badasses in wrestling now and most of them are all Indy looking athletes, there are no more big guys anymore or actual legit tough guys.
Also, the submissions. Whereas before in HCTP, you had two types of submissions (one where you tapped a button to fill the meter and another without) SvR introduced the Type B (Blue) submission holds, where the meters were like ping-pong and you had to fight the CPU for the win. Of course there were instances where you could use the default wrestling headlock and win an entire game in a few seconds, but...
Loved the Season mode in this game. I remember there was a cutscene with Torrie Wilson going in the bathroom stall with John Cena (or whatever wrestle u chose in that mode) lmao EDIT: 2:44 Thats the scene LOL

I still play SVR on my PS2 alot. What I like about it is that when you customize the rules in the settings it affects the season mode matches not just exhibition like most WWE games. I also like how experience points earned during season mode can used on any wrestler's stats not just the one you are using. I also like how the stat improvements are permanent. So if you want to do a new season with another wrestler you don't lose thier maxed out stats. It can make for some challenging matches when everyone has max stats and you're playing on Legend difficulty.

Plus it was the first game to have the create a PPV mode where you basically set up your own matches on a PPV it was a really underrated feature. And how about that great season mode huh?
I’m 35, I fell out of love with the wwe ages ago and I’m not up to date on current events. However, I recently dug out my ps2 and played through the entire season mode. Loved it, had such nostalgia and it made me go and subscribe to the network so I could go back and watch smackdown and raw in 2004. Smackdown in particular was crazy back then. JBL, Angle as GM, Cena being “stabbed” so he could be written off tv, Big Show being shot live on air. Fantastic memories.
The thing with the roster, honestly though, i can't complain because it reflects the time. There's nobody missing, so it's kind of hard to have a stacked roster.
Yeah. As he mentioned, WWE's roster just became really thin all of a sudden from late 2003 to late 2004. It's the main reason why guys like Orton and Cena started getting huge pushes at the time.
I remember that I took a part time job at GameStop when this came out and bought this game and was so disappointed that I begged the manager to take it back. It was such a huge decline from HCTP. It was so bad that I didn’t buy another wrestling game until WWE13.

Length intense matches, entertaining roaster, hyped story lines, brutal bloody matches, beautifully designed arenas and it reflected in their games too. This is one of the greatest SVR games in my opinion, I feel like they peaked at 06. They added so many things on 06 but SVR 1 will always be my favorite over any SVR game. 07 and 08 were good but then it started getting complicated and I lost interest, I didn’t bother playing after 2009. I still own this game I’m gonna have to replay it!

I used to go online and bully people in this game. Had a CaW with an Irreversible headbutt from behind and it would leave them standing, so you could just do that over and over. And then I had a finisher I could hit from behind. GG
Damn when it showed smack down on the tombstone I almost cried myself for real.. The smack down vs raw collection brings back glorious memories 🥺🥺😢. Matches was actually matches, the finishers was actually finishers, it wasn’t no pay for this or that, it wasn’t no glitches, it wasn’t no missing matches or pay per views...man yo

This is one of the greatest SVR games in my opinion, I feel like they peaked at 06. They added so many things on 06 but SVR 1 will always be my favorite over any SVR game. 07 and 08 were good but then it started getting complicated and I lost interest, I didn’t bother playing after 2009. I still own this game I’m gonna have to replay it!

I was always team Raw mainly because it was longer but that’s about it really. Love both brands though. SVR 2006 is my favorite by the way.
