      And not just any canvas reacts this way. It needs to be treated with a watercolor absorbent ground.

    Awesome! With me, it's all happy (or sad) accidents. I like how you seem to have a basic plan and then use how the paint settles to create a beautiful composition. A friend just gave me a watercolour canvas for my BDay and I didn't know what painting on it would be like and what I needed to know. This video was extremely informative. Thank you so much :)

    I had an art showcase and wanted to exhibit some work that had more of a gallery look to it so I picked up a few of these very same canvas' from Hobby and gave them a try. I found some of the same issues with dripping and lesser absorbency but was very pleased all in all. It was really great to see that you were reviewing this specific canvas. Thank you!

    Thank you so much for this! Two weeks ago I tried the Fredrix canvas for the first time and it took forever to finish. I had to basically dry brush subsequent layers because even tho the canvas was dry, the paint would lift right up from the layer beneath. I was just going to give up the effort but will now have to experiment again and will definitely paint looser.

    I took 18x24 watercolor paper and soaked it for a minute, then wrapped around a flat sided old picture frame. While the paper was still damp, I glued the side edges and mitered the corners. Then glued the wrapped paper around to the back of the frame. Since I have lots of picture frames with broken glass, this is how I use them up. After I was all done, I sealed the front of the painting with cold wax medium. I let it dry and buffed till it glowed slightly.

    You can get the same "jump" from any paints by adding a few drops of "flow enhanced" (as used in Acrylic painting) to the wash on the palette then apply it to clean water on the paper and it'll leap about in the same way. Oxgall can also be used but you need more of it - the Schminke blocks of oxgall in half pans are best for that, economical and smell amazing!

    Hello, I just bought a Watercolor canvas to a whiskey bottle and glass expecting it to spread the paint and I found that it picked up the paint on each layer, then add ink then guache anything to get the paint to stay and to be able to blend. However I did not try wet on wet. I should try that next time. I love the smoothness but my first attempt all the paint lifted. I should have searched to find your video first . Thank you

    I loved your demonstration but since there’s no glass or acrylic to protect the painted canvas, you should really put a coat or two of fixative on it. I painted a watercolor canvas years ago and there must’ve been a suggested product with the canvas because I remember sending for it and applying two coats outside because the fumes were so noxious. No idea what it is because the label and info on the glass bottle are in Chinese but so far the colors are still as vibrant as the day I painted it. Just thought I’d mention that. Really enjoy all of your vids. Thanks!

    Hey Steve! You may not see these questions, as I'm watching one of your older videos.
    1. If you don't have a "Scrubber," will a firm, short-bristled synthetic brush work to get similar effects?
    2. Do you wait for the paint to completely dry before scrubbing, or is this technique used when paint is damp?

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes a bristle brush will do a similar task. The paint should be dry but you typically wet the area you're lifting.

    Thank you for this demonstration. It helps to see how it works on canvas with all the differences noted about the watercolor acts on canvas. That looks like a nice table easel. What kind of table easel is that and do you recommend it?

      Yes, its a pretty nice easel. I actually have a couple table easels but this is the one in this video.

    Thanks for this. Very interesting although a bit over my head. My teacher has us working on a canvas. Just as I was beginning to get better with my washes on paper, the canvas reacts so differently when I try to do a wash. Also, you mentioned I think that you were using paint called, sounded like "core." What paint is that? My local art store carries Windsor Newton, Da Vinci & M. Graham-I don't think they have "core." I have trouble using the aforementioned paints on the canvas-so hard to get a deep color. Everything is light even though I go back & try to apply the same color to get darker.

      Qor watercolors by Golden. Here's a link if you want to look at some. amzn.to/2n8x0aB

    Looks great...ever tried Saunders Milford ? It doesnt seem too available in my neighbourhood...it is a hard sized paper but not canvas or board or yupo but the paint does sit on the top and you do have to wait for the layers to dry. However you can glaze and glaze. See the Spin Doctors channel review on it. In the meantime I just obtained some QoR wc substrate paste which comes in 3 viscosities. Since it is a permanent material , it may be well suited to painting over cheaper paper for a better working surface. It may be economically feasible as well for non cotton papers. Have you ever tried Twin Rocker paper ? It seems to be the closest to the Whatman paper Sargent painted on.cheers

      I've used Sauders Waterford from the same St. Cuthbert's Mill. I've wanted to try Twin Rocker but not had the chance yet.

    Another great video Steve, but I must agree with your assessment of the results on the left bushes. Regardless, of the odd composition I think you did achieve a very wishy washy piece as you said.

    lol After my last comment on another video where I was once again whining about being afraid of wasting the good paper, what should appear in my sidebar but your world famous showdown video on cheap vs. expensive! I am actually going to start using the good stuff very soon, really! :D
    As for the absorbent ground, you can make your own (and reconstitute when it goes bad). I have several different recipes but haven't tried them all yet so can't say for sure which ingredients are actually better. I'm guessing none of them beat the better papers though, which is why I keep putting off doing more tests. Oh and the wc ground I bought for comparison purposes was Daniel Smith. Golden uses an acrylic plasticizer binder, which is why it goes bad.
    Thanks for demo-ing the canvass, if my painting skills ever improve I'd like to try that sometime!

      Absorbent ground doesn't compare to good paper. I mean in the sense that they paint totally differently. Apples to Oranges.

    Thank you for this. I bought a jar of ground to make water-colour canvass, so I appreciate your tip on using it sooner rather than later. I didn't realize it would react differently than watercolour paper. All good to know and as usual, your work turned out beautiful. Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones.

    Do you need to spray varnish it to protect it?

    Just love your videos and the looseness. One question when you have finished a painting on canvas how do you seal it?

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A clear sealer like Krylon UV Archival. A heavier varnish can be added on top of that if you wish.
