TIP: turn the car on and you'll be able to push the brake pedal alot further down, makes it much easier to get to the spot where the rubber pad goes.

Lots of other videos cover this too, but yours was the only one that gave me a crucial tip: the universal rubber stop pad might only ALMOST fit and might need a bit of a close shave -- that was the final ingredient to success. Once that was done (and after I figured out the trick of using the pad to depress the button first, then shoving it into the hole space), it was literally a 30-second job. Thanks so much!

I appreciate so much you making this video. I diagnosed my brake light issue by watching one video and discovered the part on another video, but it was your video that helped me to really see the location of the bumper pad. I have an Elantra and it seemed to be in a little different location, but I was able to recognize it from watching your video. AND..... thanks for the tip on placing it in the hole to make an impression on the pad to see where to cut away to help the bumper fit. I just finished fixing mine and this was so so so helpful. Thank you!!! You could update your title to add "brake lights stay on when car if off and..." and I think it would help drive a lot more viewers to your video to diagnose, know the part and how to replace ALL from your one video!!

When i did that, it actually bent the span of metal between the stop lamp switch and the cruise control switch 🙄 I had to put an allen key in-between the stop lamp switch and the replacement pad before letting go of the beake pedal to even get the pad to stay in the hole, but now it won't depress the stop lamp switch enough to turn out the break lights. I swear, it would be 100x easier if i could just unbolt the bracket eunning across the brake pedal assembly!

Had this issue with my ‘98 Civic today… brake lights wouldn’t turn off.
Luckily I put ‘two and two’ together when I randomly saw the broken plastic stopper on the floor of the car just when I was googling the light issue.
They had one of these left at Autozone. It fit right in, can’t believe how easy of a fix this is.

    • @dougs7367
      @dougs7367 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Easy fix, but also very stupid design.. I don't understand why they didn't just design the metal of the brake pedal to stick out a little further at that spot, instead of putting a plastic piece there that will eventually break and render your vehicle temporarily undriveable. Worse, it could break while you are on the road and you would be without brake lights and not even know it unless someone warned you or worse, ran into your rear end

I'm sorry no one understands how difficult it is to film and install the part without help. My husband is about to fix our 02 Accord using this method and got frustrated, but explained that unless you have someone else filming or holding down the break pedal (if it isn't lodged down with a stick), it's really hard to show the exact moment of installation. Folks need just a bit more empathy. You show where you replace it and explained thoroughly. I appreciate it.

Have this issue now. I would try to go to the dealer though instead of going to the local autoparts store. I just called Hyundai and the stopper is I believe just under $4. I would give an exact price but I also got a quote for the brake light switch which can be the culprit in this situation and it was around $15. So if you can and have time, I would go to the dealer. You really dont save any money over a generic part and there will be no modification. But in a pinch, modifying like you did is perfect.

Kind of: this is often caused by the deterioration of THE SAME PAD (same part #, 90541-06036) but on the ACCELERATOR pedal. I had this problem for some months on my Solara; only discovered it when I went to change the pad on my BRAKE pedal - and found that BOTH pedal pads (about $2 a piece) had fallen apart/out on both pedals!

Is there a reason why the sensor would no longer be touching my brake pedal in the natural rest position or is my brake pedal not sitting where it should when not being stepped on? Is it normal for a brake pedal to be able to be lifted forward? Not sure if my pedal or the sensor are my problem.

It didn't look like you pushed the pad all the way down. I bought the same kit for my Subaru, but the white one was an exact duplicate of my broken one. You really need four hands to do this, but I adapted. I used my 4 foot level to push the brake pedal down and then wedged the other end against the seat back. But, I couldn't hold the switch plunger up far enough to get the plug in. So, I loosened the bottom nut and raised the whole switch and slid the plug over the hole and pushed it down in. I couldn't make it go all the way down and it was still up as much as yours is, so I got a pair of Channelocks and used them to squeeze the plug down until it snapped into place! It fits ALL the way down against the metal bracket! I tightened the bottom nut back up and took the level off the pedal and everything works perfect now! I even put a tiny bit of grease on the pointed end of the plug to help it go in, but it needed that tiny bit more of pushing with the pliers to get past the widest part and snap into place, flush with the metal bracket! You'll hear it when it snaps into place!

Simply push the brake pedal down with one hand, position the grommet with the small side down, release the pedal, and the pressure of the pedal will secure the grommet in place. If it doesn't work the first time just re-position the grommet.

I too am six foot, before shrinkage. Just today I'm doing this same replacement on a 99 Toyota Carolla. At 70 years old,I not only cuss a lot getting upside down in a tiny floorboard, but my hands are too lage, and extreme bending of fingers make me want some dynamite. ,
Ten minute job 40 years ago maybe. (And there was more space and less junk under there back then.) Now it's been a half day and two pints of alcohol, one to bath my flayed fingers with and the other pint to drink to make me forget I still have to put the new switch back on. 😞

The point of a video like this is to show it so this was not helpful.

You find the hole on the brake pedal arm where the old one was and push the new one into it.

By not showing the installation it became not helpful.

Why not just bend the bracket till the brake lights go off. Stick a screw driver between peddle and the bracket, have someone stand in the back of the car and say "Lights are off" and never have to deal with it again. In the old days before you were born we didn't have cheep Chinese plastic crap.
