To know that you had to choose over and over to push ahead without company or support and then you had to recover from splits that weren’t what you wanted them to be.. and the wind and lack of a crowd and not feeling good - wow that is SO MUCH perseverance, processing, recalibrating. WELL DONE for still running an amazing time and knowing even in the moment that you did a GREAT job. We can all learn so much about mental toughness, analyzing a challenge and refusing to call things that really are successes failures!!! You’re amazing, Phily!!!
I think this is a great display of why your "Love the grind" slogan is a good one. If the training is a pain you push through to get a race result, missing that result is heartbreaking. But if you enjoy the whole process, then missing a goal is just a reason to get out there agian and continue doing something you love.
It was so amazing of you to show us how you felt after the Copenhagen half-marathon…discouraged at first, but you eventually were able to reflect on what you did and feel more positive about it. This video just shows how you put in the work because your attitude is inspirational!
I was in an online seminar that weekend and was glued to the live stream up on my screen. I watched the race happen in real time and was surprised how much I was cheering from my office the whole time. I was hearing Daniel belt out "come on Phily" in my head over and over. Can't say I've ever watched a live stream before because I never cared. This one I did. Congrats and thank you for sharing it all with us!
I cry watching pretty much any marathon video. The part that really got me in this one was Kofuzi running and cheering beside you. The running community is so beautiful, and I know you really needed that at that point in the race.

Here you go making me cry again! This was so unbelievably helpful. I've run two marathons and miraculously qualified for Boston which I'm running this year. I say miraculously because I got in my head both times and didn't run up to my ability but I finished (barely) intact both times. I don't have a coach this time to hype me up and so I'm definitely going to work on a detailed race plan and with my therapist because I want to have fun running Boston because it's a dream come true. 🦄🦄🦄
No way, lady you are bloody exceptional. That time is incredible!!!! I just signed up for my fist marathon today and im shitting myself. But ive just had my dad have a heart attack, an aunt get diagnosed with cancer and as i was looking at my poppy in hospital today who just got diagnosed with lung cancer i signed up and said im doing it for them.
Congratulations Philly, a truly amazing effort and I really enjoy how you break down the marathon. I can tell you have put your heart and soul into this, and you have amazing support with Helen and Daniel he’s a good bloke who is really there for you. I have my second marathon in Manchester, and I’m scared because I know what it takes, but as you say, mental toughness can’t be taught, it’s Just in you, I will prepare the same Thanks for all the videos and your journey. Thanks for sharing the highs and lows with us as always Phily! Totally agree that tough races are absolutely vital to learn lessons and implement them next time! I’ve run 15 marathons and only had 2-3 experiences that I felt completely satisfied with. Those felt good of course, but it was the others that taught me how to pace myself, fuel properly, deal with hot conditions… The list goes on. Self-talk ‘you need to reign in the pace’ hits different when you’ve felt that wall hit you!
Incredibly proud of you, Phily. You don't learn by doing something right, you learn by doing it wrong. And you overcame everything a still walked (hobbled?) away with a PB! You are truly amazing. Definitely needed this right now thankyou Annoyed i haven't reached the weight loss i wanted this year watched this and realised how much i have achieved 10 kg down, went from cant run 100 meters without having to walk to now half way through my first marathon training plan. Great video, informative and entertaining. I have no doubt you will get the Olympic standard one day. I am currently training for my first ever marathon and learned a lot from this video. The pacemaker part is probably key, mentally and fysically. My current trainer paced one of the Dutch female marathonrunners to the Olympic standard last fall and she literally said that she wouldn't have done that without him, she would have made several "mistakes" that would have cost her a minute or two at the end, by using too much energy at the wrong time and place and because of her doubts and worries. He is a very experienced endurance athlete, that is able to get every second out of athletes he paces, by adapting to the circumstances (wind, road, athlete mindset, you name it) so you have enough energy and can keep up the right effort until the finishline. When circumstances are neutral, he is able to run a full marathon at literally the same pace (plus and minus 1 second), he is a machine.
When I was younger, if I’d see something wasn’t going my way or I could tell the race won’t end up where I wanted it to (was a swimmer) I noticed myself just giving up alltogether. I hated that about my mindset so was working on that for a long time. And I remember the feeling of pride first time I stuck through and gave it my best even though it was tough and not exactly going to plan. Thinking you did that in a marathon of all diciplines - I completely understand the feelings you have about the race. That’s not ToXiC pOsiTivIty, that’s just a normal calm approach in my opinion (that we have forgotten about a bit because we want everything here and now lol)
It’s gotta be near impossible for a kid to get this, I too did the same! Our brains are built in a way to make us give in when it gets tough, so conquering that and taking charge is HUGE! Appreciate you sharing this!
Amazing, Phily. I mean, it's not like you weren't a "grown-up" before this achievement, but in a sense, Houston kinda "grew you up"--in terms of self-awareness, training strategy...maybe even self-love and acceptance? (I hope I'm not being presumptuous here. I mean all of this in the most admirable way, of course!) And THANK YOU for telling us about weeing yourself during the event! Now I know I'm not the only one who's been known to do that on occasion!

Oh my goodness I have absolutely loved listening to this! Ive been currently training for a half marathon but my training is come to a halt because of 2 varicose veins in my leg getting really tight and painful. Its my first half marathon and im gutted because its in 2wks and I still can’t run more than 2km. Sadly I cant get treatment on the NHS so unless it resolves itself I may not be able to continue running. Im so upset. I am going out to try running later today as Ive not run in 5 days to see if my leg will allow and if not I may have to face reality that my running days are over but I’m staying positive and taking inspiration from your video. I love listening to it. Reminds me of the buzz of a race xxx

Having got back into running a year and a half ago, I have watched countless videos about training, but never about the psychology. Was fascinating that you had a plan of what to tell yourself to think. Seems a no-brainer after seeing it, but never thought it would be something that was actually in a plan so to speak. Fascinating. Keep up the great work Phily with one L. Loving the work.

Enjoyed your video and you are an amazing runner. Houston was my first marathon many many years ago and I still remember running up that bridge. After 21 marathons, Houston is still my fastest effort. Perhaps it was because I was “young” at that time and this was the flattest course I’ve ever raced on. My goal at the time was to qualified for Boston. Over the years, I’ve raced Boston twice. The racing journey to get to Boston is the amazing thing on the quest. Good luck on your quest. Cheers.

Let me know if you're running in L.A., Palm Springs, or San Francisco.😂(I'm sure there are lots of people who would help in California.) It's too bad that the pacer wasn't experienced enough to know how to pace the group, that makes all the difference. It's so much easier to run fast (or swim fast, which was my sport) in a group that's going your speed or just a bit faster. I'm proud of you running a 2:29 when you ran so much of it alone, that is SO impressive!👏

30 marathons run here. first marathon was 4.15, PB is 3.17. but the last marathon i ran in 4.36! it's a weirdly non-linear game. and burnt out plays a huuuuuge part of it. i'm obvs not elite but relate to so much of this. keep the faith, you'll get there! 😍

I can totally empathise with your feelings at the end of the race. I am a very enthusiastic (and slow) amateur doing mostly middle distance trail running. There's plenty of time in 50km and 3000m of elevation gain to go through the whole gamut of emotions and mental discussions with yourself about the day's performance. It's usually crystal clear to me how my race has gone by the time I get to the last 10km so I just push as hard as I can for the last few kilometres and enjoy the moment and the massive buzz that always comes from finishing a race and giving it my all, even if on that particular day I wasn't at 100%.
I watch all of yours Phily and Daniels content, races training both physical training and mental. Ive been amazed at how you grown as marathon runner and become extremely strong, resilient and by far your personality is so kewl. My training last season as bounced off alot of your content and training. Continuous steady progress rather than ups and downs with race times. Well those i targeted as my pbs and important races. I won lots of awards at my local club, first full year of racing. Club recs etc. Im getting fitter all the time. This is because athletes like you have given me the strength to continue this process. will Phily keep supporting your cause spiritually because it links to mine. This was an awesome video! If you are looking for a flat race that has a large supportive crowd, the Fargo Marathon is great for that (I have not run the marathon as I prefer to stay a middle-distance runner with no desire to run a marathon, but I have run the 5K and 10K numerous times and the crowd support is awesome!). Also, Bloomsday in Spokane is a great run with great crowd support. It is not a marathon but a solid 12K with lots of "training hills". Great work, Philly!
I actually think going out at 2:24 pace (with a slightly errant pacer) might have been where the glitch was that messed up your plans. I also think you're entitled to do much more moaning about the cold and wind than you did! 😊 Not blowing up/giving up is a credit to your fitness and professionalism. Looking forward to the next one and videos! 😊
15:50 i wonder what the "texas party songs" were...also an interesting observation that not being a pedestrianized city leads to low spectator counts. Houston certainly is not pedestrian friendly. Nor transit friendly. I always wondered how many spectators travel around a marathon course like Lisa and crew vs how many just go out to a single point, whether close to where they live or not.

I ran New York Marathon 12 days after having Covid, I don't know how I got through it, one of my slowest marathons, but the one I'm most proud of, choked up when I saw the finish line. If I can do it with covid fatigue, I can do it with anything! Doing Paris Marathon on 7th April, bring it on!!!! 💪
Loved this Phily! Running my second half-marathon in 5 weeks and I'll definitely be making those mindset blocks as my goal is to not lose my mind like on my first one. On my last one, I was feeling great at 7K, 14K things started feeling rough since I could catch my stride and at 18K I fully lost my mind and beat myself. The goal for this one is to stay tough and motivated all the way through and this will for sure help! Stay awesome and love the grind!
This video is so good. Your honesty really helps me relate my running to that of an elite athlete as the emotion of running is the same. You remain one of my main inspirations. Keep going there is so much more to come! I am so confident that you will break through that 2:26 barrier soon.

24:11 That hazy feeling, oh yes.. been there! Been to races in some beautiful local locations here and can barely remember them afterwards. Have decided the next few i'm going to take a bit easier and enjoy the surroundings. Phily, as an Elite on the other hand you don't have that option 😂 Well done, you may not have gotten your "A" goal but as you say you've learned a lot. You have the benefit of having that experience to take with you to the Olympics when you do qualify.

This experience is probably more the norm than your previous, the marathon is a beast and rarely do the stars align, but you can still fight for a good result and you did just that . Very interesting video, i feel like the psychological part of Marathon is not talked about enough and it was an nice insight. I am a bit of a nerd for training and i think it could be great to have your feeling around the sessions during your prep, your favorite ones, the ones you think which were the ones you gained from the most… Keep up the great work and onto the next one
I wish I had seen this video two years ago when I did my one and done Marathon (long story short, I discovered that day that the marathon is not my distance.🤷♀️) I distinctly have a memory of hitting mile 19 and telling myself that I “could just go and sit down“. But then I got to mile marker 20 and told myself I only have 10k left -that finishing at any pace was better than stopping. Oh yeah…that included not stopping for the porta potties…😎🙃 Thank you for so many fantastic and inspiring videos. I’m coming off a rubbish year of injuries and angst so I’m looking forward to rebuilding and seeing where my running happy spot is. 😁

I was so excited to you were running Houston!! I ran it as well and fell short of my goals by 3 minutes (break 3hrs) 3:03. I came right off Indy 3:00:10 seconds hoping for 2:55. My take aways were this: the concrete for me really affected my quads and the wind was right at the rollers at the end. I’m glad I didn’t sub 3 there because I wanted that moment to be amazing and I didn’t like the finish when they herded everyone into a funnel and then we had walk to the convention center. It was just a strange and very anticlimactic finish. I think I would prefer to sub 3 at another race with a nice and open finish to celebrate that amazing feeling that occurs right when you finish and hopefully the same for you speedy!! ❤

My current trainer paced one of the Dutch female marathonrunners to the Olympic standard last fall and she literally said that she wouldn't have done that without him, she would have made several "mistakes" that would have cost her a minute or two at the end, by using too much energy at the wrong time and place and because of her doubts and worries.
He is a very experienced endurance athlete, that is able to get every second out of athletes he paces, by adapting to the circumstances (wind, road, athlete mindset, you name it) so you have enough energy and can keep up the right effort until the finishline.
When circumstances are neutral, he is able to run a full marathon at literally the same pace (plus and minus 1 second), he is a machine.
Great tips on trusting your instincts not going with pacer since he was going to fast and when to pick up the pace. Way to go Phily!
When I was younger, if I’d see something wasn’t going my way or I could tell the race won’t end up where I wanted it to (was a swimmer) I noticed myself just giving up alltogether. I hated that about my mindset so was working on that for a long time. And I remember the feeling of pride first time I stuck through and gave it my best even though it was tough and not exactly going to plan. Thinking you did that in a marathon of all diciplines - I completely understand the feelings you have about the race. That’s not ToXiC pOsiTivIty, that’s just a normal calm approach in my opinion (that we have forgotten about a bit because we want everything here and now lol)
It’s gotta be near impossible for a kid to get this, I too did the same! Our brains are built in a way to make us give in when it gets tough, so conquering that and taking charge is HUGE! Appreciate you sharing this!
Amazing, Phily. I mean, it's not like you weren't a "grown-up" before this achievement, but in a sense, Houston kinda "grew you up"--in terms of self-awareness, training strategy...maybe even self-love and acceptance? (I hope I'm not being presumptuous here. I mean all of this in the most admirable way, of course!) And THANK YOU for telling us about weeing yourself during the event! Now I know I'm not the only one who's been known to do that on occasion!

Oh my goodness I have absolutely loved listening to this! Ive been currently training for a half marathon but my training is come to a halt because of 2 varicose veins in my leg getting really tight and painful. Its my first half marathon and im gutted because its in 2wks and I still can’t run more than 2km. Sadly I cant get treatment on the NHS so unless it resolves itself I may not be able to continue running. Im so upset. I am going out to try running later today as Ive not run in 5 days to see if my leg will allow and if not I may have to face reality that my running days are over but I’m staying positive and taking inspiration from your video. I love listening to it. Reminds me of the buzz of a race xxx

Having got back into running a year and a half ago, I have watched countless videos about training, but never about the psychology. Was fascinating that you had a plan of what to tell yourself to think. Seems a no-brainer after seeing it, but never thought it would be something that was actually in a plan so to speak. Enjoyed your video and you are an amazing runner. Houston was my first marathon many many years ago and I still remember running up that bridge. After 21 marathons, Houston is still my fastest effort. Perhaps it was because I was “young” at that time and this was the flattest course I’ve ever raced on. My goal at the time was to qualified for Boston. Over the years, I’ve raced Boston twice. The racing journey to get to Boston is the amazing thing on the quest. Good luck on your quest. Cheers.
It is so good to see the reality of racing/running and all the nitty-gritty of mental stamina. I mostly ran on my own and that has its own challenges.
How great to have Lisa there to ferry your crowd around to cheer you on! Let me know if you're running in L.A., Palm Springs, or San Francisco.😂(I'm sure there are lots of people who would help in California.) It's too bad that the pacer wasn't experienced enough to know how to pace the group, that makes all the difference. It's so much easier to run fast (or swim fast, which was my sport) in a group that's going your speed or just a bit faster. I'm proud of you running a 2:29 when you ran so much of it alone, that is SO impressive!👏

30 marathons run here. first marathon was 4.15, PB is 3.17. but the last marathon i ran in 4.36! it's a weirdly non-linear game. and burnt out plays a huuuuuge part of it. i'm obvs not elite but relate to so much of this. keep the faith, you'll get there! 😍

I can totally empathise with your feelings at the end of the race. I am a very enthusiastic (and slow) amateur doing mostly middle distance trail running. There's plenty of time in 50km and 3000m of elevation gain to go through the whole gamut of emotions and mental discussions with yourself about the day's performance. It's usually crystal clear to me how my race has gone by the time I get to the last 10km so I just push as hard as I can for the last few kilometres and enjoy the moment and the massive buzz that always comes from finishing a race and giving it my all, even if on that particular day I wasn't at 100%.
I watch all of yours Phily and Daniels content, races training both physical training and mental. Ive been amazed at how you grown as marathon runner and become extremely strong, resilient and by far your personality is so kewl. My training last season as bounced off alot of your content and training. Continuous steady progress rather than ups and downs with race times. Well those i targeted as my pbs and important races. I won lots of awards at my local club, first full year of racing. Club recs etc. Im getting fitter all the time. This is because athletes like you have given me the strength to continue this process. will Phily keep supporting your cause spiritually because it links to mine. This was an awesome video! If you are looking for a flat race that has a large supportive crowd, the Fargo Marathon is great for that (I have not run the marathon as I prefer to stay a middle-distance runner with no desire to run a marathon, but I have run the 5K and 10K numerous times and the crowd support is awesome!). Also, Bloomsday in Spokane is a great run with great crowd support. It is not a marathon but a solid 12K with lots of "training hills". Great work, Philly!
I actually think going out at 2:24 pace (with a slightly errant pacer) might have been where the glitch was that messed up your plans. I also think you're entitled to do much more moaning about the cold and wind than you did! 😊 Not blowing up/giving up is a credit to your fitness and professionalism. Looking forward to the next one and videos! 😊
15:50 i wonder what the "texas party songs" were...also an interesting observation that not being a pedestrianized city leads to low spectator counts. Houston certainly is not pedestrian friendly. Nor transit friendly. I always wondered how many spectators travel around a marathon course like Lisa and crew vs how many just go out to a single point, whether close to where they live or not.

I ran New York Marathon 12 days after having Covid, I don't know how I got through it, one of my slowest marathons, but the one I'm most proud of, choked up when I saw the finish line. If I can do it with covid fatigue, I can do it with anything! Doing Paris Marathon on 7th April, bring it on!!!! 💪
Loved this Phily! Running my second half-marathon in 5 weeks and I'll definitely be making those mindset blocks as my goal is to not lose my mind like on my first one. On my last one, I was feeling great at 7K, 14K things started feeling rough since I could catch my stride and at 18K I fully lost my mind and beat myself. The goal for this one is to stay tough and motivated all the way through and this will for sure help! Stay awesome and love the grind!
This video is so good. Your honesty really helps me relate my running to that of an elite athlete as the emotion of running is the same. You remain one of my main inspirations. Keep going there is so much more to come! I am so confident that you will break through that 2:26 barrier soon.

24:11 That hazy feeling, oh yes.. been there! Been to races in some beautiful local locations here and can barely remember them afterwards. Have decided the next few i'm going to take a bit easier and enjoy the surroundings. Phily, as an Elite on the other hand you don't have that option 😂 Well done, you may not have gotten your "A" goal but as you say you've learned a lot. You have the benefit of having that experience to take with you to the Olympics when you do qualify.

This experience is probably more the norm than your previous, the marathon is a beast and rarely do the stars align, but you can still fight for a good result and you did just that . Very interesting video, i feel like the psychological part of Marathon is not talked about enough and it was an nice insight. I wish I had seen this video two years ago when I did my one and done Marathon (long story short, I discovered that day that the marathon is not my distance.🤷♀️)
I distinctly have a memory of hitting mile 19 and telling myself that I “could just go and sit down“. But then I got to mile marker 20 and told myself I only have 10k left -that finishing at any pace was better than stopping.
Oh yeah…that included not stopping for the porta potties…😎🙃

Without that wind, I bet you hit your Olympic goal! The wind was brutal here in Clearwater and it crushed a lot of us! Love the video! So inspirational! Knowing how hard you had to fight makes it even better in a lot of ways! That's toughness just like your coach said. That will translate when you get to your other races! GO PHILLY!!!
I was so excited to you were running Houston!! I ran it as well and fell short of my goals by 3 minutes (break 3hrs) 3:03. I came right off Indy 3:00:10 seconds hoping for 2:55. My take aways were this: the concrete for me really affected my quads and the wind was right at the rollers at the end. I’m glad I didn’t sub 3 there because I wanted that moment to be amazing and I didn’t like the finish when they herded everyone into a funnel and then we had walk to the convention center. It was just a strange and very anticlimactic finish. I think I would prefer to sub 3 at another race with a nice and open finish to celebrate that amazing feeling that occurs right when you finish and hopefully the same for you speedy!! ❤
