- I had the opportunity to ride Amtrak from NYC to DC yesterday. They were offering a sale and a sleeper compartment added only $13 to the fare. This even included dinner. The sleeper compartment was great. It was private, and quite comfortable. Two people could easily travel a long distance in there. I tried to capture the details in a guided video tour.
Excellent tour. Made me want to crawl in the top bunk and feel 'the rhythm of the rails'. I was impressed with how clean it appeared to be.
This is great buddy! - I live in the UK and am visiting the US for 3 1/2 weeks this year with the family and we have two of these booked for our trip from Orlando to NYC and this was my first view of the compartment!
Thanks for posting!
Cool video, just took a short Amtrak trip from my home town of San Diego to Anaheim and I was surprised how comfortable it was, plus the huge bonus of not having to fight traffic, parking at Disneyland, etc. Being that we had such a good experience we are planning an overnight trip in a sleeper car, now I know what to expect... Thanks for posting this video.
@LIRR175 You're right, I got off in Alexandria. I just said DC because it gives a better idea of the length of the trip. Alexandria is about 15 minutes south of DC. Good catch.
Very informative, thank you!
Danke, sehr schoene Einfuehrung
Nice vlog !
That sounds like quite a trip. My car lacked a flat screen, but the view out the window was much better anyhow.
Dude, you should be a travel writer. Great vid!
Sounds like fun. Thanks for watching my video.
Very Well Done, you should be working for AMTRAK
I could be wrong, but I believe some of the larger Amtrak sleeper compartments have showers, too. I agree that after 3 days on the train (or even sooner) a hot shower is in order!
Thanks for the feedback. I hope you enjoyed your trip to the US.
Yes, I did so earlier this year (Jan. 2012). It was really nice, particularly along the Hudson.
Good stuff! Thanks for uploading!
Tåg på spår Thanks for watching and commenting!
@shamalama68 You're right, my mistake. I meant Penn Station.
This seems like a fancier version of a ViewLiner roomette. The hooks above the upper bunk are for the strap that keeps the upper occupant from falling out of bed in the night. It was probably folded under the bedding. Much nicer setup than the SuperLiner roomette anyhow. Good deal you got, sleeper class is usually very spendy.
This is the Viewliner Roomette.
Thanks for watching!
You're only off by 45 years. See Wikipedia entry on "Flat Panel Displays." Seriously, though, airplanes have had flat panel screens for movies, etc. going back much farther than 2009. I didn't see flatscreen TVs on Amtrak cars when I've taken them, but I wouldn't dismiss it due to an unavailability of the technology. It certainly existed pre-2009.
You're quite welcome.
@cutieindc I was traveling alone, so I didn't get to actually experience how it would feel with two people. Nevertheless, it felt as though it would easily accommodate two. It wasn't cramped at all. The seats, as best I can recall, did not recline except to fold fully down to become the bed. They were, however, quite comfortable.
This looks like a tour of a Gemini capsule on route to the moon
Houston, we have a problem. Thanks for watching!
The windows do not open, unfortunately.
Yes, the bunk is above the seats, and the seats fold down into a bed. My apologies if that wasn't clear in the video.
d1bottch just so you know, the hooks at 4:39 are not for that purpose, while they can be used for that, those actually are for the safety harness attached to the upper bunk, and they hook in to those clips on the wall to keep you from falling off the bed at night!
Great point! Thanks for the added information, and for watching.
The windows do not open.
Great video, my wife and I are planning Orlando to NYC This fall. Definitely getting the roomette. How was the food?
Wait... how did you ride a sleeper NYC to DC? Unless you got off at Alexandria, all sleeping car trains do not allow local travel NYC to DC.
Sometimes, Arrow (Amtrak's online booking system) glitches and will let you take LD trains short distances.
how cramped is it when the two people are sitting facing each other? it seems they would not be able to comfortably stretch their legs? also, do those seats recline? they seem like they're in a fixed position?
Two people actually have plenty of room. My dad is 6' 10" and I'm 5' 9". Plenty of room for both of us. The seats recline.
the hook area in the ceiling for the top bunk is where you hook in the straps so you don't fall out of the bed while sleeping
+gsarjos Thanks for pointing that out, and for watching.
d1bottch Your welcome. I really enjoyed the video, I travel a lot by train and I used that hook to hang something and the porter laughed and informed it was for the straps
Has anyone ever taken the Empire Builder route and used one of the sleepers?
Have taken the California Zephyr which uses the same equipment. The CZ runs from San Fran to Chicago instead of Portland/Seattle to Chicago. It's fantastic.
Can you say "um" or "ah" once more? Seems like I missed the first thousand!
Um, pretty sure I can. Thanks for, ah, watching.
The one thing I don't understand, if you're sharing with a friend are you supposed to just take dumps in front of each other?
I guess 1 could step out of the room ....
Or have one person step out. But yeah, pretty much. Thanks for watching.
would you recommend this for long travels like from NYC TO TEXAS OR LOS ANGELES
I've taken roomettes (these rooms) between New York and south Florida many times. That's about 26 hours. It's incredibly fun and comfortable, even for two people. On trains west of Chicago, rooms are pretty different. They use double decker cars (called Superliners), so there's a bit less headroom. Plus, Superliner roomettes don't have the toilet or sink in room, as well as the upper bunk window. I took a Superliner roomette from San Francisco to Chicago on the California Zephyr, and it was fantastic. That CZ has beautiful views (Rocky Mountains, Sierras, etc.) and there was plenty of room for two people. If you have the time, taking a sleeper is better than flying in every single way.
100% yes. And thanks for watching.
is that a viewliner seri car?
I believe it is. Thanks for watching.
you're welcome, just gave a thumb up
there makes traveling by train enjoy the USA
each space its own Tolette a sink
a bed and 2 windows but that is really cozy
our wagons are however very bad
How much was this?? Im look into takin a train rather then flying thanks
I recommend checking Amtrak's site to see the exact price. I recommend using the site amsnag: biketrain.net/amsnag2.0/amSnag.php to see prices over a one month period.
Put in your departure and arrival stations (you may need to check amtrak.com for station codes). Then put in the date and the period of time to check prices. This generally lets you get a good sense of what the best price will be.
Two people sharing a roomette will cost the same or less than a holiday or peak-season flight.
I can't improve on this excellent advice. Thanks for watching.
No, they don't.
Sorry, buddy.... The first flatscreen television was invented in 2009.
That shower, everybody uses .....
Yep! Thanks for watching.
The technology is probably about the same. :-)
Wondering the same thing...
but i did read somewhere that the amtrak windows open...
if that meant sleeper rooms, lower and/or upper coach,..idk.
They do not open.
Does anyone know if they supply chess or cheakers pieces for you?
They do not.
